Sooooo different back in the 90s when it was common to see people driving 15, 20, 25 year old cars. All changed once they started riding us to have new cars with all the safety features

Can someone please explain hook turns and their purpose? And what that lady should have done properly to avoid that crash? I’m from Brisbane QLD, so hook turns aren’t very common :)

She turned too soon. You have to wait until the light in the opposite direction turns green before you can turn. Many people turn too soon, its a common mistake. I've even seen police do it.

The idea is to allow trams (and other traffic) to continue straight without having someone turning right block the road. It allows traffic to flow through the city easier when done properly. The other comment is correct about when to turn, too.

Here in Germany, they aren't either. In our neighbor, Denmark (I live in Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost German state, which shares a border with Denmark) it's mandatory for cyclists.

What the hell was that turn the lady did in the end? Of course she was going to crash! Granted, im from Toronto Canada so our cars drive on the right side of the road and the driver seat is on the front left of the car. People are calling it a "hook turn", what's that?

That’s a hook turn, there’s a few of them throughout Melbourne. I live in another state where we don’t have these, so I got this from the VicRoads website: To do a hook turn you must follow these steps. 1: Approach and enter the intersection from the far left hand lane and have your right indicator on. 2: Move forward to the other side of the intersection, keeping as near as possible to the left of the intersection and clear of any pedestrian crossings. 3: Stay stopped until the traffic lights on the road you are turning into have turned green. 4: Turn right into the road.
