Ta-Nehisi Coates: Reparations Are Not Just About Slavery But Also Centuries of Theft & Racial Terror

On the heels of Wednesday’s historic hearing on reparations, we speak with renowned writer Ta-Nehisi Coates on the lasting legacy of American slavery, how the national dialogue about reparations has progressed in the past five years and his testimony in favor of H.R. 40, which took direct aim at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Coates says, “It is absolutely impossible to imagine America without enslavement.”

I have heard some persons argue for reparations. Although this violates due process completely and requires persons of today to pay for the sins of centuries past, I am actually willing to pay reparations to put this bullshit completely behind us once and for all. I think we should pay $500….no, let’s make that $1000. You just need to show me the scars on your back where your master beat you with a bullwhip and the money is all your’s. That’s $1000 per scar. Agreed? Do you know who broke that promise of a mule and land to the newly freed slaves? I am thinking it’s the same people, of the same political party, that fought to keep them as slaves in the first place and who continue trying to keep them as slaves to this day. It’s the same party that has pushed racist policies in action and deed since it’s founding through today.

I can. This was a hearing more or less to make the case for the study of reparations (not like we really need one IMO, but I get how these things are done and this is a first step). Usually it is during the study and presentation of the results in latter meetings when we sees the heavy hitters and the research. What we have to do is keep the pressure up that this doesn't just stop or is procedurally slowed down as it winds through a ridiculously slow process which in many cases is when these things have a tendency to go away.

Thanks to Ta-Nehisi Coates and Democracy Now for this discussion. One point that can’t be emphasized enough is that slavery begat racism, and right now, as I’m writing this, racism impacts every major institution. We can’t name an institution that does not consistently, annually, produce racially disparate outcomes: Education. Finance. Employment. Criminal justice. Economics. Health care. Politics. Law. Entertainment. Mental health. And so on. In fact, this is how we’ve been able to have “racism without racists,” as Eduardo Bonilla-Silva wrote. So long as we have fundamentally “nice” people, who don’t make the connection between historical racism and modern systems (which came to be via policy, voting, pseudo science, unconscious bias, etc.), we’ll continue to create racist outcomes that we simply don’t see.

This includes nothing for wrongful death damages or breach of contract punitive damages. Just birthright land inheritance No wonder none of the courtiers to the kkkleptocracy want to talk about reparations. I just know that he said in this interview that he didn't have the data when he wrote his article before, and Yvette also said that he didn't have the data before. But in that hearing Mr. Coates brought data which enhanced everything that he already wrote in that article. So I appreciate him for kicking that hearing off and setting the bar so high that naysayers couldn't even touch him.

@@milahkay212 I do appreciate him doing it too. He came correct. To be clear - Coates said around 8 minutes into the interview that he did not have the information when he wrote a previous piece in *2012*. He then said something to the affect that he wouldn't have been able to bring that level of information to answer Amy Goodman's questions nor to the committee hearing if it wasn't for his level of knowledge brought about through the research for his *2014* piece. I personally think for an essay (which is what he wrote and not a paper) he did an excellent job of including data as well as the sources he used and tying them into the personal accounts of the harm it did individually and collectively to the black people which is the purpose of an essay.

And that many people suffered injustice at the hands of the old country. You will guarantee the entire black population will join the rest of society and cease the victim mentality if paid reparations? The confederate statues were torn down. What happened after? Nothing.

Glad someone is saying reparations are about more than slavery and about the continued depression of black people of all backgrounds in this country, the social, geographical, racial, political and financial exclusion of black people has long exacerbated the "original sin" of slavery. As a Haitian, I'm glad people are aware of the strategic bankrupting of Haiti following its independence. France is elitist in comparing its treatment of black people relative to the USA. I lived there and that was my experience, but France doesn't even acknowledge all thst it has done to its colonized nations. Coleman Hughes is wrong headed in his definition of what it means to be a victim and I'm glad Coates sufficiently rebutted him.

If the Democratic nominee doesn't run on reparations, and a large group of people don't vote because of that, then it'll all but ensure a win for the next Republican nominee, and your wish for reparations would be denied. With a Democrat you have a chance to have reparations, but with a Republican you'll never get them. That being said, I absolutely agree the US should have reparations. Throwing away another election isn't going to get us closer to them though.

@Carla D. Black Americans have also voted for other Black Americans with the same outcome, basically shit to show. It's the politicians banking on the fact that you go back to sleep when Jesus doesn't save you. It's your vote and one bought in the blood of your ancestors. All I'm saying is be strategic in terms of how you use it. Stop falling for the okeydoke. Educate yourself on how your particular jurisdiction's electoral systems works and field candidates on the state and local level to move your agenda forward. If you want people in place to move on reparations when the time comes then you've got to cultivate and get those people in place beginning now. Acting, voting and holding feet to the fire are the only ways you can do it.

Hilarious how people call Coleman a Sell Out. As if the Coates line of sound bites aren't where the bread is buttered. Translation: "Sell Out" = Because Coleman is Black, he has to believe exactly our doctrine. In other words, you're saying a black man can't think through things himself and have his own opinions. @@jwalker4647 You don't see it as Integrity because you are fundamentalists. Fundamentalists of one religion can't face anything outside their dogma. There's nothing wrong with disagreeing with Coleman. I am persuaded, personally, to disagree with him, but calling him a sell out only undermines your position as it reveals your groupthink. If it wasn't groupthink, you would disrespect the arguments rather than disrespect the man. Coleman's first testimony states that he believes Racism is a Stain on the Country, that reparations not paid are the country's worst sin, and that there is some kind of historical recognition due. He believes that reparations paid today don't address the Black Community's biggest problems. He continues to outline a logical case for his opinions. I am not entirely persuaded by his logic, but I am more persuaded by his logic than his detractors because they refuse to engage his argument. They just want to call him names, often racist names. Your refusal to engage the argument, but instead hate, name call, disrespect him, and otherize display that you are not interested in finding logical solutions. If you were interested in logical solutions, you would engage discourse. Instead you slander. You are a cult.
