My guess is: There's still a risk of the tape bending slightly at longer lengths but I think the two metal tabs on the magnetic end assist in keeping everything in-line and perpendicular to one-another, so you'd really have to screw up the initial placement of the measuring tape to have a crooked mark..

That laser looks at least 30 grand wide so is it the center of the laser or the front or back? Not sure how to meet the granularity of the readout if the laser that indicates it is the same width of the resolution of the readout.
