@@skadi6750 I had a hard time believing it too, but they apparently DO perform live every time. For example the violin player has fallen over during performances, resulting in horrible violin sounds etc. Also comparing the vocals to the studio version, there are definitely differences there. This video does have some inconsistent cuts though, so the video might have been compiled from multiple performances, but yeah, as far as I know, they really sound this good live.

I do believe this is a live concert, but I definitely understand the doubt, with Mairead's large history of pre-recorded performances. Singers are most definitely live if you look closely enough and have a good understanding of music.

If you look closely there is some lip synching going on. @3:07 there is nobody moving their lips for 2 or three seconds while the singing continues (Lisa turns back around while she is "singing" and she's not actually moving her lips). I am a big fan of theirs, this is literally the studio recorded version. Every note, every little thing is dead on. That's not possible with live music. I'm not knocking them, its very, very common for live music performances.

Exactly. Irish history is full of heartbreak and suffering offset by serious partying, dancing, singing, drinking. It's how they coped with 800 years of oppression and impossible, rocky soil, constant rain, and a short, difficult life. What a resilient culture!

Dúlamán has EVERY in-between. Research into that song, as well as modern applications of it, have proven it to be extensively layered. It's about survival, adaptation, foreign influence being both a good and a bad thing, forbidden love, and, of course, seaweed.

The Irish part means: "Go home with them, go home with them go home with them, Mary. Go home and stay at home because a bargain has been made." Historically, the song means that the reason she can't consort with sailors is that she has been betrothed, usually at birth in the old times, and to someone she has no interest in, who may be more than twice her age. Many Irish songs seem happy but are quite sad. The ones, like this one about not wanting to have to go through with an arranged marriage that doesn't take the young woman's needs or feelings into account, are usually extra sad. This one looks happy on the surface, but she is consigned to a life of little more than slavery. Running off with a random sailor who at least may be her age may seem like a possible way out, but she'll never see her family again, and they need her help to survive. Maybe they need this marriage so they can all survive. Underlying Irish songs is this constant theme of hardship, poverty, and inevitability. She will go back and take her proper place in society and will bear it all as best she can, or, in other songs, she will die of "grief" on her wedding night, by poisoning herself or throwing herself into a river. There's a saying that goes something like, "Ah the Irish must be mad for his wars are happy and his songs are sad." There are variations.

This is actually helped out by the musical context created by the instruments. The verses about dancing and looking for the man she wants are in a joyous Bb major, and the skng switches to the relative minor key, G minor to indicate a serious turn. Edit: after listening to it again it's actually Bb minor. My bad

That last saying makes me wonder. Maybe, knowing the history, "his wars are happy" because they're fighting for their freedom (adds purpose). "His songs are sad" because they've been oppressed for so long. The English (which I assume the saying was by, in the first place) couldn't understand it from an outsider's view.

I love the way that the transition from vocables/lilting in the beginning as a full conversation, to the fiddle as bridge to the english of the main bit of the song gives the illusion that they were on just the other side of some linguistic veil then suddenly, the violin’s magic allows us to understand them. I know that the lilting is not actual a language, but this is the only they could really achieve this effect in what is like a mixed Irish/English speaking audience, and it was done so effectively!

  • @ItsmeeSaoirse

The lilting is known as mouth music. When Britain occupied and ruled over Ireland, they introduced draconian and brutal laws against Irish people known as The Penal Laws. These were laws specifically designed to destroy Irish culture and make Irish people destitute. The Penal Laws banned Irish people from doing many things. One of the things they banned were musical instruments. The British tried to destroy Irish culture and thought they could succeed by not allowing them play their cultural music. Frequently, breaking such draconian laws could frequently result in a summary execution of that person. The Irish resisted, determined to keep their culture alive and created musical sounds and rhythms with their mouths for people to sing along to and dance to. At the beginning of the song, not only is it an excellent musical choice but Celtic Woman are also honouring a very important and immensely proud part of our cu.tural history.

It's about a family. The redhead is the flighty daughter, want's to head off into town ( Galway ) to meet the sailors for some fun. The fair headed girl is the sensible daughter telling her to forget about it, reminding her that she has work to do in the morning. The blonde woman is the mother trying to keep the peace. And the bald headed bloke is the father saying it's nothing to do with me. Sortof like the Cinderella story.

@@sophiemaynard7680 Irish history is full of tragedy and brutal oppression. Irish music, song and dance is partly bourne out of a tragic, brutal and oppressive history. Songs and music were often written as means of escapism from the oppressive lives they were forced to live. Many traditional Irish songs are energic and uplifting , matching the unbreakable spirit of Irish people and a steadfast determination to keep their ancient celtic culture alive. I have notable relatives who were instrumental in doing this and it makes me immensely proud to be their descendant and to be Irish.

The roles I picture the three playing based on their performances in the beginning: Lisa is the headstorng teenager with dreams of marrying a sailor. Chloë is her more responsible elder sister, possibly having already settled down with a family of her own. Susan would be their mother, working with Chloë to convince Lisa to stay at home.

I'm American and I'm 14 years old. Some people might call me a bit weird. I like to dress differently and would describe myself as a Goth. I love grunge music, heavy and death metal. I got recommended some CW videos, I don't know how lol, but I'm so, so happy that they were recommended. Irish music is incredible. It is so calming, uplifting, joyful I just can't help smiling when I listen to it❤❤❤. It just makes me want to twirl around and dance. I'm so absolutely in love with Irish music and songs. The Irish language (Gaeilge) sounds beautiful. It is so lovely to listen to. I'm going to try and learn some Irish words and maybe speak a little Gaeilge sometime in the future. I know that I have Irish heritage but until recently did know much about it tbh. My mom and dad looked into our past and we found out we still have relatives in Ireland, lots of relatives!!!!!!. My parents took a DNA and they encouraged me,my brothers and sisters all to take a DNA test and I found out that I am Irish American with some Scottish😃😃😃😃😃😃😃. Looking into Irish history, I learned all about the horrible things that Irish people had to go through over the centuries which makes me think how incredible a people they are. To be so brutally treated over the centuries and still have such an incredible beautiful and rich culture, makes me incredibly proud of my Irish heritage and I will learn all I can about the incredible country my ancestors were forced to leave behind.. Are there any books, websites that anyone can recommend to me about Irish history? If you read all this. THANK YOU LOL

I only really discovered Irish/Celtic music a couple days ago, but I am absolutely obsessed. This hit me in ways I can't describe, it fills my heart with a pure, calm feeling that is so much more and can't be written down in words. I live in a completely different corner of the world and I doubt you'd ever come here and I doubt I'd ever be able to see a performance of yours live, but after seeing this I so desperately wish to. After listening to this, I just stop listening to other music for a while and just drown in the memory of it, it feels so damn good, I can forget all other problems in my life. I myself don't understand how a song whose lyrics don't even relate to me touches me so, but here I am.
