Syril is possibly the most relatable Imperial we’ve seen so far. He just wants to contribute to something bigger than himself, to feel like his life has meaning. Plus when he just sat there eating cereal while his mother berated him, I felt that.

Haha, maybe privately with just her son, but I think his mom would be the type to actually talk him up in front of others. It seems like some people misunderstand her, like that person who described her as "sadistic," which I find kinda simplistic, though the one-sided exaggeration's funny enough. People who've had a mother like that and have come to a reflection and realization decades later, or perhaps just someone who understands people better, can get that she really does love him and thinks pretty well of him but shows it in some bad ways.

At his best, he's a lawful neutral character that keeps everyone on their toes. At his worst, he's like a pest that won't go away. He believes that he's in love with everything that the Empire has shown him so far. He's convinced that he's on the same mission as Dedra. But what happens when he sees a side of the Empire that he can't deal with? Or if the Empire betrays him? That would be a really interesting character path for Syril Karn. I think its more that his story hasn’t climaxed yet. Other stories had low moments which followed highs. Syril has been going from low to a different low, and at the end saves Derdra but that doesn’t really offer a high. Not yet. We don’t even know how Derdra will respond to it. Consider also that this is wedged in between Maarva’s funeral speech and Luthen standing at the edge listening to his victory of causing the Empire to go too far as the unarmed civilians scream and blaster fire echoes across the buildings. His high isn’t that noticeable.

Too often in film and media, villains can end up being unrelatable and even cartoon like. But real world evil is often the result of the system that they work in. Many are never knowingly aware of the consequences of their actions, and those that do are numbed by nihilism or a desire to do something meaningful. Syril's backdrop with a neglected resentful mother makes him an ideal victim to be exploited by the system. I feel that even if he achieves his goal of power and respect, he'll never truly be fulfilled.

  • @KnowledgeDriven

And for those that do rise through the ranks or are from privilege to begin with, if nihilism or a desire to do something meaningful doesn't numb them, typically $30 million does (ie. While I would not be opposed to the two of them becoming something more, I wholeheartedly believe that it was a wise decision to not have this happen in Season 1. Syril's behavior towards Dedra, while certainly really creepy, is seemingly out of his reverence for her authority, and having their last appearance be Syril saving Dedra and telling her that she doesn't need to thank him was a good point to leave them at. Even in these circumstances, having the two develop healthy feelings for each other, even if only platonic, would have felt forced upon the audience and would have distracted from the chaotic riot going on around them.

Andor is all about regular but passionate people doing big things that'll have a ripple effect throughout the galaxy eventually. This isn't just exclusive to the rebels, as Dedra's insistence on 'connecting the dots' and rising above her coworker is another example, but of imperial passion. I think Syril's obsession with Dedra, eventually saving her from getting torn apart in the finale, is gonna have some big effects in Season 2. The two of them are gonna accomplish something potentially catastrophic for other characters (or themselves).

Syril is not a bad guy... he thinks he is doing the right thing. He wants to bring justice... only in the sense to make him feel he is worth something and has control over his own destiny. Syril going from that private security force to the Empire makes sense because he doesn't see the politics behind it, he just sees it as a means to impose order and to make himself feel big and accomplished. Very relatable ideas.

If anything Syril is the type of antagonist that doesn't get as much focus in Star Wars. Someone who naively believes in the strength of the Empire and that it means something good, even though it isn't. Honestly there isn't really any character I don't like in Andor. Even the villains are well thought out and executed. Hell even the minor characters are well thought and executed. That shot of the son who lost his father shedding tears after Maarva said that Ferrix was sleeping is one of the most heartbreaking shots in the show.

So let’s make the next winner an even worse choice by making the three of these the three highest rated comments in case of an Admiral Blue Jeans incident so HK-47 is the topic of the next video. I have been busy and can’t always make it early on a video but I am asking all to help get these names commented and be the highest rated on each of these until HK-47's video is released. Thor, what do you think of the idea that shows like Andor, that explore what it means to be an Evil Empire and who supports it (why would enyone, etc) is actually beyond the scope of Star Wars? All stories have a scope, the fact that the Empire is evil is a given of the setting well established by the storyteller in the original films. You're already dealing with things that do not, and CANNOT, exist. What then is the justification of pulling at that thread when there is a very real possibility that in doing so the whole 'sweater' might unravel and actually do damage to the internal logic of Star Wars?

This is an interesting question that I would have liked to see him pick and address in a video, though I have a good idea which side he'd fall on, because he's stated that he very much believes in keeping the Empire and Sith evil, while considering _Andor_ a masterpiece. I'm basically of the same opinion, except I think I'm less beholden to the notion that George Lucas should continue to have the final say in _Star Wars._ There is such a thing as good and evil in _Star Wars_ (and in life, I'd say), and I think it's best to stick to that, but there is so much that can make for rich storytelling by exploring the nature of something like oppression, fascism, rebellion, war, espionage, etc. that invites us to a more nuanced, understanding (and even sympathetic) look at the _Star Wars_ universe...without unraveling it all, as you say.

IMO she has always been overrated fanfic character who was only so high previously because of childhood nostalgia. She is a Mary Sue written for kids, doesn´t translate well into live action and the Ahsoka show was trash. She is definitelly worse character than Jabba. Jabba has a purpose in the story, he´s not shoehorned into it and doesn´t screw the canon and lore. Nobody hammered timetravel nonsense into SW just to save him from the death.

If everyone else seems schizophrenic to you, chances are it´s you who is actually schizophrenic. :D Dangerhair Wren belongs even lower, people were still too nice to that fanfic-tier Mary Sue abomination. Also, calling a low rating of a FICTIONAL CHARACTER abuse is distasteful and disrespectful to all real victims of abuse. People are chronically too nice on Felony´s trash OCs because of nostalgia for those animated shows for kids, so stop complaining. Bo-Karen belongs at the very end because she is an unique type of Mary Sue - a villain who keeps falling upwards and is treated like a hero by the plot which bends into a triple pretzel around her. She is not even a character, she is whaamen can do nothing wrong ag3nda. Mara Jade, the female character who was on the villains´ side and became good, the character who is everything Bo-Karen is supposed to be according to Felony but isn´t, is lower than Bo-Karen. Barris is low because TCW ruined her for those who knew her from the "legends" material which was written before TCW. The most of sequels characters are just bad or so underused it´s hard to rate them, so people give them low rating.
