We lived in Syracuse for a while . My daughter was doing fellowship in upstate hospital. She is a doctor. Now we are back to India . We are Indians . We stayed in Jefferson tower one of the oldest building there . It was a pretty happy time for us .👍

I grew up in Syracuse and I had a lot of friends, good schools and good teachers. That got me into Univ Buffalo. I've enjoyed my life because SUNY BUFFALO gave me the education in Mathematics to get good jobs.

OMG!! Syracuse has grown! I got homesick this year and decided to check out KZread for videos on my hometown and I'm amazed and pleased the city is doing so well. I miss upstate NY but not the snow. I live in south Ga now because of the warm weather. Y'all Yankees have done a great job. Happy holidays 🤗

I’ve lived in Syracuse for a good chunk of my life, and I quite enjoyed this video! It was very interesting to see my city described from an outside perspective, despite the lack of information about the heavy poverty and segregation of the city. I also thought it was funny how pretty the pictures made the city look. Walking through downtown Syracuse on a normal day feels like walking through a ghost town, what with the gray weather and lack of foot traffic. If you ever visit again, I recommend visiting Water Street Bagels and the neighborhood and shops near Westcott Street :)

Glad you found it interesting! I do think that one's experience in a place like Syracuse can vary dramatically from day to day, depending on the weather, time of day or week, and activities. I've found that when I'm going to a city specifically to enjoy everything the city has to offer, I have a better time in general. I've actually been to Westcott before, but will definitely check out Water Street Bagels next time I'm there!

Right now due to the weather and COVID, it is quite. When there are normal festivals and activity, it is a bit different though. Yes, parts are high poverty, but what people don’t consider is that off campus college students are included. Syracuse is also a big refugee resettlement city and in turn, you have newcomers that are trying to get on their feet, which can take a while.

Glad to watch your video after a recent video posted that shows Syracuse as the 4Th Worst places to live in New York State. Was impressed with Lincoln Square and some of its architecture and the historic pictures you presented. It shows that despite the current facts or rumors about the place, it still holds some Historical reminisce of a Golden Age where Beauty, Art and Creativity still had a place in the visions of progress. I really hope that Syracuse On Track, the cities light rail service, returns one day. Especially with a seasonal service from within or around the city to the state fair grounds. The state fair draws in huge numbers of people each year.

I’ve lived in Syracuse, my whole life and it’s a very nice city not super compact like New York City not empty like utica or Cortland and Destiny Mall, formally known as carousel mall is a nice place to visit and has hundreds of things to do

I have lived here almost all of my life. I am in the Western suburbs now. The last real boom the City had was in the late 90's the Armory Square area was the scene, there were some Tech jobs, service, and artists who would influence the culture. At that time I worked in a beautiful old "mansion " on James St. a block from Teall Avenue. Those few blocks have many historic buildings. Enjoyed the video, others have stated that Syracuse is a not so desirable place to live, however every city has it's warts. It's location is key to ADK, the Finger Lake region, heck even Vermont is only 3 hours away. Great job

It was a mild boom. I was a working as a Technical Illustrator for an engineering firm back then. A lot of the major work was gobbled up by firms/agencies in NYC. We were small potatoes, but we had serious contracts with the Big 3 in the automotive industry. As a young Gen Xer back then Syracuse was a great balance of social scene and the fun adventure of outdoors.

I liked this video. It reminded me that there are nice things about Syracuse, a place where I spent some of my young years (high school ages). I then went to college on LI and spent 8 years in the LI/NYC area before moving to San Francisco, where I have lived ever since. When I was there I didn't find much about it to like a lot of the time. As I watched this I realized that I might find more to like as an older adult. But no relocation for me, family are gone now and I can't imagine returning to that lake-effect snow! Thanks for the video!

Syracuse is a pretty cool place indeed. A lot of people say Syracuse isn’t the best place to live at, as a person born and raised here, in my eyes, Syracuse NY is actually a nice place to live in. The community is nice. Syracuse does have some ups and downs, but I will always love the city.

Nice video- Kind of like Buffalo-Underrated with some great old places and architecture -nice areas and then there are the stay away zones. But also like Buffalo its about the nearby suburbs that are very nice and rural with good people. In Buffalo even we who live in the suburbs when asked where we live say Buffalo first. The cost of housing is probably still very reasonable in Syracuse burbs while up here in Buffalo home prices have been shockingly soaring the last 8 years.

Really appreciated this video. I did a series on Instagram featuring some of the dirt cheap homes for sale in this city. Researched hell out of it but your video showed how beautiful the city is, regardless of the negative influences everyone seems to whine about. Not saying they aren't real bit for an outsider it was lovely to see how nice the city is. Helps to balance the downside. It is so easy to trash a place. And the rust belt has its issues. But climate change in other areas is making a place like Syracuse look very interesting. Thanks again!

MOST used to be a New York Army National Guard Armory. I was stationed there. It had neat stone tunnels and an old horse stable we used to park the HMMWVs and other vehicles.

Yup, crime and moldering neighborhoods are a real issue but unfortunately that could be said about most Upstate cities, that so often teeter between being on the brink of revival and totally going under. As an Upstater I say that with affection actually. Erie Blvd needs to go, it’s a wasteland of asphalt. But Syracuse also has its charming and quirky bits . Onondaga Lake has been largely cleaned up and it and the park surrounding it are fantastic.

They renamed Carousel Mall to Destiny Mall? Lived there for 14 years. I had some good childhood memories but I don’t miss it. Winters were nasty and people weren’t friendly.

I definitely agree that this only shows a very small part of Syracuse. Not being from Syracuse, I wasn't able to draw any conclusions about more than a small part of the city without spending a tremendous amount of time on research. I'm not naive. I know that there are tremendous levels of poverty in Syracuse. I assume that violent crimes occur at an uncomfortably high rate. There are many ways to view a city, and I chose to be optimistic in my interpretation.

@@TheDCShow0 Next time, check out the University Hill, Westcott, Tipperary Hill, Eastwood, a couple of businesses on Grant Boulevard(Peppino’s & Change of Pace) in the Court-Woodlawn neighborhood, Destiny USA(6th biggest shopping center in the country), North Salina Street has a few good restaurants, Franklin Square is a nice hidden neighborhood with a cafe/nice apartments/a sandwich shop, Webster’s Pond in the Valley and go down the street to Gannon’s for ice cream; check out the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Burnet Park, ice skate in Clinton Square during the winter, check out a festival at Clinton Square during the warmer months, check out the view of the skyline from Onondaga Park and walk on the Creekwalk among other things just within the city when things open up.

Syracuse is just like any decent sized American city. Some parts are “hood”/rough and some parts that people forget about are actually quite nice. Also, each side of town has a mix. Some lean more one way than the other, but you can find a mix of neighborhoods on all sides. So, it has its good and bad. For instance, ask people where Strathmore, Sedgwick, Scottholm, Salt Springs, Bradford Hills, Meadowbrook, Tipperary Hill, Winkworth and Court-Woodlawn are. I wouldn’t be surprised if people that even live in the city know where they are and all of those areas are nice, solid areas of the city. There are others as well. So, what you may find is people stick to their area of the city, but aren’t familiar with other parts of the city.

I would be curious myself (I've never lived there). I would disagree with the notion that it is a difficult city to drive in. I think the fact that its a relatively small city that's lost population would mean that there are more roads than the city currently requires. I'm no expert though; people who actually live in Syracuse would know better.

@@TheDCShow0 I felt like with the roads being more narrow and so much pedestrian traffic around that I’d have to be much more cautious driving there. I thought about those same roads covered with snow, ice and slush and all the cars parked in the sides of the roads and thought about how often it looked like people have to parallel park and I thought about all of that in the most slippery conditions. That’s what made me feel like it would be more difficult to drive. I should’ve been more specific.

Not difficult to drive. You can be anywhere in 10 minutes. Public transport is spotty for the outskirts. Roughly hourly for the main area's in the City.

I lived in Jamesville and worked in Syracuse for 4 years. Dont go to syracuse city as its depressing, quiet for a city and full of homeless people. Occasionally there would be nice events like food fair, winter events. Destiny mall is big although it feels like most malls in america and slowly dying. Winters can be nasty, car rust out over time because of the salt. They are fast in clearing out the snow though. Affluent neighborhoods and towns nearby are nicer. Manilus, DeWitt, Jamesville, Cazenovia, and Skaneateles and feels much more active.

What a nice surprise video. I should tell you about ON Track. It was NEVER finished. The bridge over Park Street was never put in to get to the Amtrak Station. It did have good ridership to games and special events at the shopping center. Centro's bus hated it and lobbied against it. It would have been perfect for the real estate now so popular around the former Lackawanna Station. Or if it continued under the CSX (New York Central Main to the State Fair Grounds. Like tracks used to do on it's way to Oswego. It really wasn't light rail. It was a single 50 year old RDC or Rail Diesel Car. One more thing, Amtrak moved out of their 1,000 car FREE PARKING LOT. In East Syracuse. This impacted ridership, with a paid parking lot owned by Centros! If your gone for a while those parking charges add up. Yes there should be a network of local trains. Buses cheap to run can not and will not attract the ridership rail does.

lived there for 2 years before my wife forced me to request a transfer. actually, other than the winters, very high taxes, was nice to live there, especially all of the gorgeous villages in the region.

sometimes, in my dreams, there were canals, but not just the old one, more, instead of the centro buses

3:21 ...nope. Genesee street didn't "stay there until 2001". That's just when the ice rink you see now was starting to take over. Previously there was a park in the style of Hanover Sq.. Only significantly larger & more complicated. There was a yearly tradition of huge ice sculptures being created there & in the warmer months people hung out, kids rode skateboards. There was no street there in my lifetime.

i saw some people with binoculars by the state office building (that's different than the state tower building, but about a block over) looking at the old nynex building on state there, by fireman's park, so i asked why, and they told me there's a nesting pair of perigrine falcons up there

Lived there for 35 years was a great place in the 60s and 70s right up to the time the carousel mall was made, after that, it just seemed to slowly start fading ...

I don't spend a lot of time in Syracuse, but my inclination is that the only parties would be thrown by college kids, but college is in finals week or over rn so I doubt even that is happening. Mostly, people are inside or at casual gatherings because its very cold and covid is going on. But I really don't know why I'm even answering this because I have no firsthand evidence.

JFK airport is probably at least 4 and a half-5 hours from Syracuse. If you have to fly to JFK, you can take a subway from JFK to either the port authority or penn station and then take a bus or Amtrak to Syracuse.

They are planning on removing I-81.. But you missed out on so, so much more about Syracuse... Just covering 3 squares of downtown doesn't even start to do it justice.. you missed the Landmark Theatre, expanded for Broadway shows, the Erie Canal Museum, only weigh lock building in existence.. and all the wonderful parks we have in the city, among so much more..

I also love this city. It isn’t the best place in the United States to live. But it is a very interesting and cool place. I actually am from Syracuse.

I'd like to add to this by saying that plans to remove I-81 have received national attention from both the US DOT and Biden himself, and with NYS allocating almost $1B to replacing the I-81/I-690 sections in the city with a community grid.

that train only went from carousel, downtown by clinton towers and i hear down to green lakes or was it jamesville beach eventually, making it pretty useless for going anywhere most people need to go on the reg

But also this is not the real Syracuse and all the people that were born and raised here know that you are just showing what a visitor that stays only a few days would see everyone else knows that Syracuse is not a city you want to live in💯

Yeah 100% I wasn't able to capture anything in the spirit of what the average person in Syracuse experiences from day to day. The goal of this video was to show people that Syracuse is a city worth paying attention to. Maybe in the future I can make another video that dives a bit deeper.

Loved this, go often being in the 518 area (way way wayyy upstate NY lol) best place to eat a good bagel is "the psychedelic*atessen" I think it's called- its right downtown Syracuse, next to ONLY THE BEST WRESTLING GYM EVER.....CURBY 3-STYLE WRESTLING CLUB!!!

@@TheDCShow0 omg you kinda can't miss it, it's got this incredible grateful dead theme lol its honestly really cool, and the art inside and out is pretty cool lol I know right to the side of that bagel shop there are stairs that go down to the waterfront and along the building wall it says Syracuse NY!! Cool pic spot lol plus its right on the Hudson river and you can see the bridge from there, out back by the water! Curby 3 style wrestling (aka Joe usenellini, spelling *) club does this outside wrestling event called " Headlocks on the Hudson " its an incredible event that my son and us always had fun at, it's only been going a few years now but you can find where I'm talking about by maybe looking up that event lol (I remember things primarily from my kids wrestling venues and landmarks lol so sorry for the crappy directions lol)

I loved Syracuse NY, worked at at SU! Needs better government, leadership and diversity!

That was a very well done review if this mid sized city. Unfortunately like most American cities there is unreal violence filth and danger in the Cuse... you may want to mention it because after watching this it seems like a place I’d love to live.... having been there before.... I can tell you it is definitely NOT a place I would ever want to live. It’s so freaking sad that Americans don’t care about it take care of their cities....not sure why we can’t figure it out... compared to most of the rest of the world

Some people want to live there, others do not. Not that Alec Baldwin is everybody's favorite actor, but it may interest you to know that he has rave views about Syracuse. I think the problem with American cities is that the wealth has fled to the suburbs. Europe has kept their wealth in the urban core, and their suburbs are what our inner cities are like.

This from an outsider! I would give him a "B" grade for keeping it nice!

Downtown and SU are nice enough. But since you ask what it would take to earn an “ A”, Maybe a little less bias and showing the rest of Syracuse: the Westside, the Southside, “ the Valley”. Maybe some drug use and Crime Rate statistics and local news clips that cover all too frequent shootings.

Do you work for the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce? You should because you're able to show a fictional Syracuse that isn't an unmitigated disaster that gets worse with each passing year. Anyone who's able is fleeing the area and the people who stay tend to be miserable compared to other parts of the country. I don't say this to criticize you or your video, but Syracuse is tragic.

Yes it is Central New York NOT Upstate, NY. He mispronounced Onondaga which is the name of the County and the small Lake. The large lake is Onieda.

Thanks for the sub! Yes I am in agreement, people are overly negative when they really should just be enjoying what they have.

This guy is big on foot traffic. Tons of mfg have left Syracuse and upstate ny. High taxes, utilities have drained areas of jobs. It was booming in the 50s. Unfortunately they used Onondaga as a sewer industrially and otherwise.

That Niagara Mohawk building is an architects wet dream, its amazing. Long live Syracuse.

Nah, there are some nice areas of the city as well. Check out the area around Nottingham High or even around Corcoran High. The outer neighborhoods are still largely solid to very nice.

@@richardhunter4235 Someone was stabbed in broad daylight a couple of blocks from where I live. Sounds scary, right? My natural reaction would be to be more tentative to go out into the streets, but that is a bad strategy. We all own the streets, they are our community. To keep them safe, more people need to be out on them. If we abandon them because we're scared of crime, they will rot. I'll be walking tomorrow in order to avoid yielding the streets to madmen who stab innocent people. I urge you to do the same, no matter how safe or dangerous your neighborhood is.

Not to mention the fact that Onondaga County pays the highest welfare rate in the country which attracts people from all over the country just to get that welfare check
