why cant we do alkylation first , in the second example ????

I think the second example is a continuation of the first? Otherwise if you're starting with just benzene, you can take the same path as the first example because adding NO2 first would make the ring be very deactivated.

One mistake in reaction is AlCl3 not ACl3 but your leture is nice.
