A live, semi-improvised synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.
This piece started with some exploration in the DAW on my Patreon, making longer loops with some interesting textures and rhythmicity. Once I had some static loops, I exported them to the Octatrack to really bring them alive.
Usually when I'm working this way, I try not to be too complete with the loops, leaving myself something to do later. Here, I created the melody and some extra chords using the sequencer on the Octatrack, plus two hardware synths. I decided to use these more affordable synths because I hadn't touched them in a little while, and because I think they're underrated because of their price. The S-1 is a fantastic and versatile workhorse, and the Volca Keys has a surprising amount of character-I didn't even add external effects to it, here!
Finally, the Chroma Console was added to the S-1 to add some grit and texture, and I think it excels at that job.
Altogether, I'm really happy with this track, with its mix of in-the-box power and out-of-the-box performability. It felt like the perfect cap for the album I've been building. Please go give it a spin.
Thanks for listening.

Mate you are so talented. No wonder you are an academic! Those changes are amazing fella! I would love to jam with you! So many levels of amazing! Your gear knowledge is so extensive for navigating systems etc, how the hell do you find the time to master every bit of hardware out there? I’m still yet to even try elektron drum machines 😂 Really nice changes mate, how you use delay and pitch etc. much love.

Cool piece, Jay - really like the plucky rhythm starting at the 2:00 break! Also like what you did with the stereo mixing to keep the busy arrangement from getting too smeary!

Great track! I remember watching your older octatrack videos and have NO idea what was going on. But after getting a digitakt a few weeks ago I can now understand what and how you are doing it. I'm even more impressed now that I understand!

@@WeAreDaftt I'm a little torn to be honest. I also have a push 2 and I feel a lot of redundancy between the two. I'm not sure exactly why I bought the digi in the first place other than using it as a live performance drum machine. I have only had a few hours on it and I really love the device. I have run my hydrasynth deluxe into it and grabbed samples. I have run my roland fantom into it and grabbed samples. The midi functionality is awesome for sequencing either the upper or lower parts of the Hydra. But again, I can pretty much do all of this in Ableton with my Push. I love the digi, but I just don't know if it's actually providing me a huge upgrade to my studio and workflow. I will have to keep messing with it and incorporating it into my livesets to get a better opinion. Also, it seems my track 2 button is rubbing on the side/frame and gets stuck sometimes. Kinda frustrated about that and seems the only fix I found online is opening it up, loosening some screws and putting it back but I'm hesitant to do that.

Hey jay, awesome jam! wanted to ask your thoughts on the Microfreak since I've realized you've had it for quite a while, but I see it seldom used. Have you passed it on for another synth? I'm quite interested in it as a companion piece to my M:cycles and digitakt.

I passed on the Microfreak, yeah, but that doesn't mean I don't think it's a great synth. Super affordable, a ton of great oscillator options, and some great routing/modulation. I'm not huge on the keys, and I worry that getting it for a Digitakt/M:C setup will leave it feeling like it needs effects (though you could run it through the Digi). But it's a cool synth!

What are you doing with the yellow trig on 1? It’s a one-shot but you are hitting it after a scene riser etc? I don’t get it how it relates to seemingly arrangement transitions.

  • @JayHosking

You might be seeing scene 1, which I sometimes click to rather than slide to with the fader, and that makes the 1 go yellow. Track 1 is playing the stuttery sound off the top, and MIDI 1 is the melody, so you're probably seeing the scenes
