THAT sound is the reason why Dune 3 is one of the very best VA synths out there.

great in depth review! you have a very sympathetic way to present your thoughts. and your detailed look on workflow and practical aspects is very insightful to watch. thanks for your work. sometimes it needs a non-youtuber to do the youtube job properly 😉

I find the overall sound a little overwhelming, I like to start off fairly basic and gentle and build up a patch but Dune is kind of full on from the start and gets a bit tedious. Layering sounds is great though and the filters are also well done. By the way Thomann have it for £109 👍

Given that 9 out of 10 reviews on YT just gush about how great everything is, and how reviewers band over backwards to exonerate even the most annoying designs, I enjoyed your critical take a lot! That said, there are points where I think Dune3 does better than you allow. The 8-layer design may well be its critical selling point (that, and the raw sound). Granted, the way it works isn’t the most straightforward: the top bank of 8 buttons lets you choose which layer you’re hearing, and in the bottom bank you select which layer you are editing. That’s twiddly! And it's really easy to make a big mistake. But in return you get 8 completely separate synths (3 oscillators + 2 filters, envelopes, etc). Then you have the two FX banks on top of that. (And in that light it’s rather sad to only have three LFOs and four MSEGs. They should be per-layer too.) You said you didn’t mess with the filter routing settings, but they can be useful. You can use one of the filters before FX, and the other one after - which could help tame that super-hot distortion. And there’s a simpler way to assign mod sources than dragging the little doodad from the mod matrix to a knob: you can right-click a knob and pick “Modulate with…” from the menu. This way you assign both source and target in a single operation, which is probably nicer. My main gripe with Dune3 is the small number of mod sources, and the fact that LFO’s don’t toggle between uni- and bipolar, how was that not an obvious thing to put in? And the wavetables: I don’t know how much thought was given to the factory selection, but to my taste they’re meh. So I’d like to import my own, but they can only be imported one at a time - you can't import a whole folder of pre-made wavetables, which is annoying. So I end up using Dune for its analog mode mostly, but when I want to have fun with wavetables, I go elsewhere. Oh, and the general lack of visualization - I like to see my envelopes and drag them directly, I want to see and drag the filter shapes, I want to see the LFOs moving in time - it just helps so much. Dune3 looks very classy, but visualizations would let me see what’s happening, they’re not just eye candy.

every video skips over the fact that routing 1 and 6 are the same, 6 has dotted line around fx.
