Symposium on Architecture: "Design Techniques II," with...

In a discipline reformulating the role of the architect, the question of technique has acquired a new priority. Techniques move with unexpected fluidity, circulating between individuals and collectives, calling the influence of each into question. Paradoxical and ambiguous, techniques simultaneously negate and open possibilities. A technique can be a subversive strategy, resisting apparently objective parameters, or an appropriative gaze, reconstituting the world as an object of disciplinary knowledge. This symposium, the second event of the series "All that is solid...", interrogates the collectivity, authorship, effects, and deployment of contemporary design techniques. With Tom Emerson (6a), Kersten Geers (Office), Florian Idenburg (SO - IL), and Momoyo Kaijima (Atelier Bow-Wow). Moderated by Enrique Walker, associate professor of architecture at Columbia University GSAPP, with responses by Silvia Benedito, assistant professor of landscape architecture, and Antoine Picon, G. Ware Travelstead Professor of the History of Architecture and Technology.

To share what might be inspiring... In order to propose what should be understood as "concept", "percept" & "affect", thus as "philosophy" & "art", Deleuze & Guattari ("What is Philosophy?") mentioned architecture as the first art as art begins with house: that of which "the most scientific architecture continually produces and unifies planes and sections... it could be defined as "frame" with a connection among various frames oriented differently, applied to other arts...(There is) a composite system consisting of points and counterpoints... (there is) a matter of sensations (percepts and affects) combined... (While) the system still needs a composition plane run "deframing" opening ways from house territory to city-cosmos, the system in which there are cosmic forces to create new affects...". There is "aesthetic composition" as the working of sensation which is, so they said, the definition of art... Parergon: To Deleuze & Guattari's "architecture as frame" there is one with such nuances: Jacques Derrida's "parergon" means, among others, frame, "both in the sense of physical limit around a painting and also in the more conceptual sense of a "frame of reference". It is Cheetam's attempt "to deploy his (Derrida's) reflections on the sublime within a narrative about disciplinarity. (Cheetam, Mark. A, "Kant, Art, and Art History, Cambridge University Press, 2001 pp. 103-14, especially p. 104). ### Architecture: making things useful. It is possibly about anything. It is about amobg others journeys and conversations; and it is about memories and hopes shining in lines and angles ... There are supposedly artworks of those stories . Meanwhile today "network" is such a kind of (Kuhnian) paradigm, a (Foucaultian) episteme, a Deleuzo-Guattarian) concept ...??? Then it was said, "... §3. Cosmotechnics as Cosmopolitics I propose to go beyond the notion of cosmology; instead, it would be more productive to address what I call cosmotechnics. Let me give you a preliminary definition of cosmotechnics: it is the unification of the cosmos and the moral through technical activities, whether craft-making or art-making. There hasn’t been one or two technics, but many cosmotechnics. What kind of morality, which and whose cosmos, and how to unite them vary from one culture to another according to different dynamics. I am convinced that in order to confront the crisis that is before us-namely, the Anthropocene, or the intrusion of Gaia (Latour and Stengers), or the “entropocene” (Stiegler), all presented as the inevitable future of humanity-it is necessary to reopen the question of technology, in order to envisage the bifurcation of technological futures by conceiving different cosmotechnics. ...". Look up the definition of 'technique'. Ugh. Infuriatingly over-wrought and frustratingly verbose. Unbelievable. 'I have two questions' but only ask one; 'I have three questions' but ask eight. I will talk so long you will all forget what my questions were and babble on with your prepared notes, relevant or not.

What you do is not technique.
