Erick Eguigurens I appreciate the idea, but I disagree. Symphony X has always been, at least to me, a band anchored by Michael Romeo giving the impression that he is soloing through the song like a virtuoso and rhythm guitars may ruin it a bit. Beside, I think we should leave some rooms for two michael's bass and keys ;)

dear band concert film directors: it's really ok to keep the shot on the soloist for 90% of the solo. really.

Cameramen never heard any bands's songs in that cases so that's main reason why they suck at filming certain bands, they're unable what and when to focus on...my 2 cents.

Having studied a bit about the subject, I can confirm that most of the times it's an editor flaw, editors don't pay attention to the parts where the musician is playing a lead solo and they just move on and fill the blank by focusing on something else

It is damn insane how Romeos hand teleports between frets constantly and effortlessly.

Best metal band of all time. They have it all. No bad albums, strong concepts, classical, heavy and progressive. Incomparable musicianship. Awesome vocals, terrific live.

I would disagree. "Underworld" is indeed a masterpiece and I consider it to be one of the greatest metal albums, but every song by symphony x until this album sounds almost the same. I would give that title to "Dream Theater". They aren't as heavy, but sure are a lot more melodic than any other band in metal history.

Michael Romeo is Chuck Norris of the guitar playing. He is insane, awesome, fantastic! Russell Allen is one of the best vocalist in the world and the rest of the band members are incredible musicians as well. They are the modern Deep Purple! Thank you so much for this pro shot video. never thought of it like that, but true, Purple Mk.2 were the best (45 years ago!), each musicians at the top of their leagues. Glover was a totally underrated bass player, Blackmore was a god, so was Jon (RIP) and Paice was phenomenal! Ian Gillan wasn't half a bad singer either. Symphony X are stupidly talented and individually incredible too. Many thanks for the video, also excellent.

I wouldn’t say Deep Purple, Symphony X is more of a cross between Dream Theater and Yngwie Malmsteen’s strengths (the songwriting and live performances and blending of classical and metal from Yngwie but removing the ego and lineup inconsistencies; and the technical chops and experimentation and band chemistry of Dream Theater but unlike DT they have a singer who’s great live and also know remember not to get technically overindulgent and just wank).

Amen! Fan of DT myself, any of their recent youtube videos make me cringe and never want to hear anything from them ever again. It's just a money-spinner of a band now going horribly through their motions, picking up their pension funds. In a fair world, Sym X would have all the glory they deserve and be motivated to give us more of their phenomenal material followed by great live shows. Oh well, reality..

Anand Padmanabhan Symphony X is the band that Dream Theater wishes they could be. They’re an amalgam of the best parts of DT (technical chops from all members, experimentation, band chemistry) and Yngwie Malmsteen (songwriting, blending classical and metal, and live performance) but with none of the bad parts from either.

Very few human beings ever get to this level of musicianship. Insane. These guys are true artists.

Jason spent a week in hospital, and was released after some days. He then started a rehab program that took a minimum of 3-6 months under doctors’ care. John Macaluso joined them on tour for their South American and European dates, until Jason Rullo was able to fully recover.....Recovering from Heart Failure might take years, if ever recuperate. To do things as exhausting as doing hi intensity sports or, playing drums and touring, is something very difficult to handle and or endure. Seems that he has been taking good care of himself so he can -come back- full time.

Symphony X is the sickest band full of dudes who look like a local cover band ever. I saw them back at Gigantour in '05, and my group seemed to be the only ones who knew about them before they played. By the time they were done, everybody was blown away.

The energy and connection between the crowd and the band seemed way better from Sea of Lies and onwards. Hopefully they'll soon play more old stuff again.. Also, why is the synth drowned in this mix? Pinellas solos on the Underworld songs turned into "audible bass rhythm" lol

Despond And that's the reason Metal is what is now. Old bands playing the same old songs over and over again, because it's "fine" if they "have" to play new material. People don't wanna support new songs. Iron Maiden has been playing The Trooper for 34 yrs and going. It stinks now. Maybe bands should just stop spending money producing new albums altogether and just tour every 2 yrs playing the same old songs. Underworld is an amazing album. I'm not trying to be a dick to you in case the tone of this paragraph make it seems so, I just don't get this line of thinking.

Not the cleanest performance from Romeo, but still, effortless.

I lack the knowledge to explain it properly, but there is a big difference. If you've played guitar through a modelling unit first with headphones and then listened through some kind of speakers you know what I mean, it's a similar thing. Tuntuupa muuten hölmöltä kirjottaa englanniks.

I wished they used a metronome live. I don't think that tempo adding makes the music better for the people there, and it only makes romeo play sloppy, like here.

Damn. These guys are incredible. I'm in awe at the technical level of Michael Romeo. He makes it look as if what he's playing is supereasy when in reality is damn complex. All of them are indeed truly skilled musicians.

Goosebumps on certain sections while watching this! Mostly due to RA's incredible vocals!!!

O show dessa turnê aqui em SP foi muito bom, só fiquei meio desapontado com as poucas pessoas na platéia, uma banda com essa qualidade deveria lotar qualquer lugar. Apesar que a própria banda não investe muito em redes sociais, vídeos e afins. Russel tem diversos projetos, talvez esse seja o motivo.

If anyone is interested, I cut this into individual tracks, re-balanced the audio, widened the stereo field, and removed those pops at the beginning of the concert and in the middle of "Underworld." I'm sure there are some I've missed. Russell Allen is down in the mix on Nevermore, but sounds good on all of the other tracks. I was literally just thinking about this. My eyes have opened since losing Warrel Dane from diabetes/alcohol complications.

I've never understood why there's no a really good quality video/audio of Symphony X Live on KZread! one of the greatest prog metal band of all time without good quality material :(

Russell Allen is a hidden gem amongst vocalists of all genres ! Killer talent ! One of the best along with Rob Halford, Matt Barlow, Andy Kuntz and King Diamond.

I always wonder why Dream Theater never get rid of James LaBrie and get Allen. I love both bands but Allen, in my opinion, fit perfectly in DT.

Yeah, I think the same. Allen´s voice is (until today) much powerful and versatile. But I hardly doubt that it would be worked out too.

James LaBrie is not only a vocalist he is part of the band, a family member. They can't just replace him like that. I rather want to see a band who loves doing music together, otherwise it would be like any other commercial pop band.

Allen is a great singer but i preffer labrie on DT. Labrie never would sing in Symphony X.

Man, what a moribund crowd. But Sym X's energy is sick! They are so amazing live!

saw this show at Qc City. It was amazing!

I remember when SX appeared, did come across it by the second release. Guys are used to it today, but back in the mid 90's it was something completely unheard of.

Over the years, Russell Allen and Jason Rullo keep getting better and better regarding live performances, while Michael Romeo and Michael Lepond seem to do the exact opposite. Romeo and Lepond have never played as sloppy live as they do nowadays (and especially here, just listen to the bass intro and guitar tapping melody in Sea of Lies). Also, have they cut down on the amount of backing vocals for Romeo and Pinnella? They used to do so much more of that back in the days.

Lepond isn't as bad as Romeo, but I agree. The sound team also never gets the keyboards done right either. They're either too low or inaudible like in this show.

Hi there! I see your point in general, but keep in mind that here we have a festival that the audience doesn't know the band and the sound quality that the festival provided was not specialised for SX's sound. That is always the case in big festivals like these. Check also DT's videos around for example. Their performance is not at its best under festival circumstances. Anyway I think that bands like SX, DT etc are not for big festivals like these. @@spyrosstathis1250 I'm not basing my statement on just seeing festival footage on KZread, I've seen the, live myself on multiple occasions during their tours (where they have their own sound engineer) and I still stand by what I claimed.
