Our band just did this song tonight and a lot of people were emotional and a few people in band were crying

I played this song my first concert of my freshman year. Now, every time I hear it, it just absolutely makes me sick to my stomach. It's hard for me not to cry when I hear it.

I did this piece almost 40 years ago in an honor band. Both a good introduction to modern composition and very emotional.

I played tuba for this song in the Washington All State Band at the University of Puget Sound gymnasium. We had 17 tubas. Once we were done playing, the field house remained quiet for about 5 seconds before the applause started.

@@alanbevington4875 Yes it was. I was one of the tubas in the back row. That summer I went on a band tour to Europe and the gal that sat next to me was on that tour as well.

@@jphoeke Too funny. I was there too, in the Bone section! I remember that ending, and the flute playing the pedal tones and then the silence.... I still get chills when I think about it.

I was a junior in high school when i played this (it feel like a million years ago) and hearing it from the audience perspective is something boarding on a surreal as musician playing it i didn't get the full impact of the song thank you for posting and allowing me to reminiscence a little

I played trumpet on this with the All University Band at Northern Illinois University. The "bombing" part of this piece was so intense...I've never had a chance to hear it from the perspective of the audience. Thanks for posting this!

@@andymilsten9096I’ve played this live before as well. The band played movement 3 (the bombing) for the first time in a rehearsal I was not present for, so the next day when I was there and they played it I had chills and was crying by the end. It’s incredibly loud - you are surrounded by sound and it’s very moving. Very intense

Dude, I was remembering seeing a performance of this, so I looked up a few key words and found this! The very performance that I saw live! The internet is a small world sometimes.

Dude! The world gets even smaller! A few days ago you walked by right as I was telling my friend who was with me in the audience about finding this video. (I wouldn't expect you to know who I am. I'm a vocalist. We haven't officially met, just been in theory or something together.)

Was this a FINAL product and not a dress rehearsal? Starting at 2:14.. that is a train wreck.. 2:21 trumpet if you are going to make a mistake.. make it a big one. 2:55 Quite possibly the MOST difficult passage for concert band are between 2:51 to 3:00.. the passing around of that "idée fixe".. every section has a go... and you did a 5/10 job at it. What the heck is wrong with the trb's? Pitchy? Yes! More sectionals required. This entire thing from a Judges perspective screams "MORE SECTIONALS REQUIRED"
