First of all, thank you for the simple explanation, our professor has such a rich vocabulary he kinda forgot how to use it simply. Also thank you from the bottom of my nonbinary lgbt heart, for talking in this way about trans people, and people who stop in front of the flipping door confused which one they should use 💙

You are very welcome. Symbols are powerful, which is why the dissemination and adoption of new symbols and symbolic messages (e.g., pronouns, etc.) is important for effecting social and cultural change.

@@stephenklien As a trans person I immediately got anxious when I realized you were going to talk about bathroom signs but was pleasantly surprised by your inclusion even if it was only because it is relevant to the topic. I've seen too many times professors and teachers over look the role of people who refuse the gender binary in various subjects where their role in the subject is completely worth discussing.

@@user-tv3mc5tr9b Well, that's a big part of the value of this example -- symbolic meanings are most powerful when they are largely taken for granted without a second thought as "normal." That's one of the most oppressive power moves there is.

I have a doubt: shouldn't traffic lights be considered symbols? What red, yellow and green in a traffic light represent is arbitrary because they have no connection with any referent. In contrast, if we see smoke in the distance, that is an index that there is fire nearby. It isn't an icon because we don't see a picture of fire, for instance, but it is not a symbol because we know there is a real link between smoke and fire. Maybe I'm getting something wrong, what do you think?

    What are referent expression?

Was this a term you heard in this video, or did you run across it somewhere else? In the semantic triangle model, a "referent" is whatever object or concept is "being referred to" when someone uses a sign, like a word or a phrase. So, I would imagine that a "referent expression" is some communication act that is the object of someone's representation. For example, let's say my teacher presented a lecture in class today. When I tell my friend about it, I use the phrase "Professor Longwind's lecture." That three-word phrase I used is a sign representing a "referent expression" -- specifically, my teacher's lecture. That's my best guess at what you're asking. Does that help?
