This was my late mom's favorite song by Sylvester. RIP to both her and him ❤
This is his best, most dynamic songs he has ever recorded. He put his heart and soul into every word he sang on this song! He was proud way before gay pride. He was bold and didn't care what anybody thought of his lifestyle choice. That was truly courageous to do at that time. He was ahead of his time and unfortunately he passed away too soon. You are gone but will never ever be forgotten. RIP Sylvester.

Nobody else may hear this, and but Sylvester’s falsetto / upper register scream is very reminiscent of Prince, especially on songs such as “How Come You Don’t Call Me”.
I am listening to this song as I text. I also love Patti. But this version is the best. Rip beautiful souls. I also want this song played at my Funeral. My sons going think I going crazy. When I text and let them no I just luv the SONG. I CAN LISTEN TO THIS SONG ALL DAY.
I cry every time I hear this song. I think of my friends that have gone on to glory and the ones still here. I needed to cry this morning. THANK YOU!

@@vm7497There’s only one artist that gives me goosebumps each and every single time I watch/lister to her and that is the late great Ms Whitney E Houston. Whitney could sing any and every thing from pop, gospel, RnB, NeoSoul and she even played around and stunned Pavarotti singing opera. As good as Aretha and Martha are, Whitney is on a whole different galaxy. Listening to Whitney sing I Am Changing is something transcending. A true story to share with you. Forgive me....for it is a bit log for here. I was "coming out" as a gay man in the late 1970s while in college at the University of CA, Irvine. I would go to local gay Discos in Costa Mesa - "Newport Station" and "Rumor Has It" in Garden Grove; and yes, I also ventured out from the "OC" to gay/mix clubs in WeHo - "Studio One / Backlot", "Circus Disco", "Greg's Blue Dot", and "Odyssey". The Odyssey (a strip mall now on Beverly Blvd. near the Beverly Center) was an adult disco (21+) until 2am; but from 2am to 6am it was 18+. I remember very well in addition to Donna Summer's "Last Dance", an anthem song at closing was Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life". Oh sorry, I'm straying. I certainly have GREAT memories of the Disco Era. One that particularly stands out - is this live performance of "You Are My Friend" by Sylvester. A college friend of mine, Carol Taylor worked for the owner of "Studio One / Backlot", Scott Forbes. She got him to promote "Gay Nights" at California amusement parks. I would assist Carol post flyers (bar hop) for these events at the local gay discos. Do any of you remember the first "Gay Night" at Disneyland or at Knott's Berry Farm? Well, prior to these venues, there was the first "Gay Night"...at Magic Mountain. Oh yes, and Sylvester was the headline performer. It was that night that I heard this live outdoor performance of "You Are My Friend" by Sylvester, Martha Wash, and Izora Rhodes Armstead; and IT SOUNDED JUST LIKE THIS. I would swear it had to be this same night. They started to sing this song, and about third-way into their performance Sylvester is singing "I've been around and around; I've been looking around and you've been here all the time". He starts telling their story, saying "these girls can sing!". Sylvester sings to Martha "you've been around (my friend)"; and she takes over and belts out with her vocal talent. Martha then brings it down and Sylvester then mentions that Izora too "has been around (my friend)". Izora takes her turn, the crowd is going crazy, standing up, cheering....and the performance ends with such a high. I will never forget this as one of the most memorable and my heart-felt performances that I've had the pleasure to see. Thank you for allowing me to share this story and memory with you.
