Hey Greg, this is really well animated and composed. The B section is quite touching(love the subtle effects you added in as well). Really reminds me of those forest survival games.(can’t quite remember the specific one I want to mention, sorry about that)

I say yay to the bass and drums, other people may disagree. If I could say this as sensitively as I can - while I really appreciate the concept and the idea to have drum sounds, the choice of drum sounds seems not to do it justice - this doesn't reflect negatively on your compositional process at all. If I am to be fair, that could be down to the tools that are accessible to you - not everyone has a drum kit and drum recording tools, and MIDI programming can be useful for sketching out ideas. If I had drum recording tools, and if my drumming were of an appropriate standard, I would totally drum along to this. But collaboration with a drummer who's much better than I am might be a good idea. I like the choice of rhythmic patterns as well. Here I feel that the concept is a strong idea, especially because it's very meta - forest of forests. You could think of a structure which has some kind of recursion built into it. Every fern is a fern of ferns.

Another possibility could be to have drums on the whole thing with some rimshots and ride cymbal in the slower section. This might help if you're looking to establish a sense of continuity, even with these contrasting styles.

Thank you, Cameron - your comments always give me such excellent and nourishing food for thought! Of course I would love to collaborate with a drummer, and have them record drums for me - but easier said than done. I did contemplate having drums on the central section too, but decided against it. This piece, like a lot of my pieces, is an experiment, and I really appreciate the range of responses I receive from listeners, which helps me to hear and think about my music in new ways.

Wow this is a great composition! I think the addition of bass and drums (and that funky reverb in the middle section) works really well for this piece! Very tasteful execution, which makes me wonder: are you a drummer yourself? I think the kick drum (?) might be a bit too intrusive, though... Listening to this maybe wood blocks might have added to the vibe as well? Or maybe they would feel a little too 'bright'... Your use of multiple time signatures is excellent in this one. They don''t feel forced at all. I also like the structure of the piece. It's actually quite conventional in many jazz pieces to have this sort of ABA structure that also returns here. I really love the harmony in the seconds section! Subverted my expectations in a couple of places. Delicious! Anyway, enough rambling. Thanks for this great piece!

Thanks again! I admit to being something of an amateur drummer. I actually teach beginners the drums too. You might be right that the kick drum may be too intrusive. Mixing my tracks is one of my least favourite tasks. Composing is the true joy, mixing feels like more of an admin task to me. I know others love it, and there's a real art to it, but my heart is with composing. Yes, ABA structure is very common, but my idea was to have the main melody enter in the B section. A is more of a building section, and then dying away at the end, the main theme is withheld until the B section. This little conceit is the idea I was playing with in this piece.

@@GregHarradineComposer Aha, I thought as much! You have my respect. I'm not much of a multi-instrumentalist, sadly, even though I'd love to be! Oh yes, I totally relate to the sentiment of mixing feeling like a chore. Besides, I suck at it. It's one of the reasons I tend to stick to solo piano compositions.... And I see, you wanted to emphasise the melody in the B section. I didn't really think much of that, because in ragtime, for example, you also have melodic strains alternated with rhythmic strains, though usually in the opposite order (theme - dance/rhythm section -theme). I think it's quite a nice idea!
