I wish they kept the stations open, we could do with a train service on the Northern Beaches, possibly to Narrabeen where the old tramshed is.

Hahaha, they had plans for that back in the 1970s but it never went ahead, and with the B-Line service coming in since 2017, I doubt we will ever see a rail line going over there.

Great video with great use of time and non-dwell time. The Underground Platforms at Central have since been used as part of the Central and Eastern Walks which is fantastic except (for the horrible floor design), which is such a shame for future rail connections, however, I would like to think the remaining tunnels on either side could be utilized one day by a light human conveyor belt system or people mover to connect with either Redfern Sydney trains or Waterloo Metro one end and to the Museum Sydney train Station or another CBD location, they need to revitalise the use of all old systems, no abandon them

The platforms were built at the same time as 24/25 save cost in the future should another line be introduced via Central. After twice being overlooked (for Airport line and Metro) it looks unlikely it will ever see use.

When I was very young at about age 7 a teacher took my class to St James station and a railway employee gave us a tour. I remember at the time in the early 60's the 2 centre platforms were not joined as they are now. There were 2 distinct platforms. We were told that they were used for terminating trains before the city circle was completed. I remember him telling us about platforms at central that were never completed and that they were intended for trains to the eastern suburbs and northern beaches. He also told us of a station below Taylor Square adjacent to the court house, however I have never been able to confirm this. We were also taken to Town Hall station and shown what is now platform 5 but at the time was a partly built platform. We were then taken to Wynyard station and the tram platforms. I will never forget that excursion.

All this talk of Northern Beaches lines and people don't realise that the hardest part was almost complete. Theoretically the Eastern Suburbs line platforms at Town Hall were built in the 1920s and they should link up with the tunnels at the Menzies Hotel carpark at Wynyard Station. From there you have right of way to North Sydney Station on the tram lines on the east side of the Harbour Bridge deck. If this is the case you could still build the Eastern Suburbs line to Kingsford as it was planned by doing a scissor crossover northbound from Town Hall station. South of Town Hall it is a bit difficult because there is not enough tunnel portals at Goulburn Street carpark because of the City Circle lines coming from Museum. Therefore the southern section of the Eastern Suburbs line from Town Hall to Erskineville is integral to both projects unless you want to integrate the lines coming from Eastern Suburbs and Northern Beaches with the western lines south of Town Hall station. So the Eastern Suburbs line and Northern Beaches line would both have to be integrated with the Illawarra line to Helensburg and Cronulla. There is a building or at least once was one on Bourke Street Taylor Square that has an uncanny resemblance to the stair entrances to St James and Museum stations. I saw this years ago when travelling on the main north-south road (State Route 64 then Highway One) before Eastern Distributor was built.

  • @aussiejohn5835

@@RangaTurk I have seen that building at Taylor's Square, however it was many years ago. I was working nearby and at that time it was a public toilet block. I agree that it certainly looked almost the same as St James Station. Maybe what I was told as a child was actually a fact. I however have not been able to confirm that theory. When lockdown is over I will visit that location and see what, if anything is left.

  • @RangaTurk

    @RangaTurk

    4 жыл бұрын

@@aussiejohn5835 Woops well there goes that theory. I only saw this building from the car window passing through so and I was probably too young to see the precise details or signage that it was a toilet block. You are right however that there are tunnels that point in that direction from St James but somehow I think there is a greater chance of finding a partially started station at Charing Cross after Bondi Junction as opposed to Taylor Square. The North Sydney tunnels to Northern Beaches I hear are interesting as well. Someone said that they are about 400m long. Thanks for the insights.

@@Liamnerfdude1 I agree. The existing line to Hornsby via North Sydney and Chatswood is called the North Shore Line. Very misleading as it goes nowhere near the shore. Tourists sometimes take this line as they think it travels along the coast.

Wow hasn't that place gone to hell in a handbasket, during the 80's and 90's Cityrail as it was known then used to use the platforms as a storage area (mostly for document storage). The reason the tunnels and platforms were abandoned and never completed was the tunnellers hit a section of porous rock and basically Sydney Harbour started flooding into the northern end of the tunnel. The platforms and tunnels were well known to staff at that time and much better lit and more secure.

+Tanki Offline En - the next line to go through central should be Sydney Metro - part of the reason they want to build this from what I can gather is that there are that many trains on the network these days and often pretty full and as the trains come into central the tracks seem to converge into a few tracks for Sydney's 25 odd running platforms- taking some of the trains off the lines - meaning the Bankstown line and putting them on brand new lines - should allow for a less congested and more effective network - wait and see I guess - snoozing or following it like a hawk til 2024 when they finally open it.

+Yishai Barr - why couldn't they use them for Sydney metro ?? Surely it will cost them like a MASSIVE PACKET to build yet more platforms for Sydney metro that connect with central station while using these platforms would save them that MASSIVE PACKET of cash- that they could use elsewhere. Yes they will loose the heritage value of untouched platforms- but that is ALL PART OF a growing city.

+Michael kiem - very interesting - I am too young to know or remember In regards to the turnbull governments announcement re HSR- I want more information to convince me its not just an election sweetner - such as would these 2 platforms be finally used in either HSR or a high speed line to the west where passengers change and jump on another train to the south or north.

+Lauren Briggs her if it goes ahead but I doubt it millions has been spent since the 80's last year Branson got knocked on the head for the one he was to form but In relation to the Sydney end a completely new line prob a tunnell with better alignment would be repuired and new platforms thes ones are to far out of way they would rum it to western side either plat1 or reclaim the dock road

That tunnel goes all the way to st james there's a lot of tunnels in the city circle that they don't use anymore since world war two. There is a plan to maybe make line to the northern beaches.... Lol just a prospect though.

Worked as relief Assistant Station Master there on several occasions in the 80's and did quite a bit of exploring, there was a large population of rats etc.. as well as the occassional homeless person and druggos. It was originally planned to be used for the Airport link as well as other never realised plans, really is quite sad that these were never utilised but left to rot away.

@Love All hate none well it was mentioned in the video about the relocation of the bodies from the old Devonshire cemetery to make way for the railways. So beyond that I don’t have any more info. If you’re anywhere near Mitchell Library in Sydney you might want to see if there’s more info there like a contemporaneous newspaper account, old maps, church records etc. could be interesting to find out. So good question.
