Man, these really take all us Sydney-siders back.. My old man's 70 this year, and he's worked with every one of these trains over the last few decades at UGL in Auburn (formerly Maintrain) since his 20's. Definitely makes you think how far something as simple as public transport has come on the railways, and how much time has already passed since the updates. Great thing for aircon, especially, haha.

The old red rattlers i used to get to school on in the 80s were the best . No self closing doors so riding around with them open was standard. And window's that opened right up . Safety was up to the passengers . Good days

They still have trains with no self closing doors un Sydney. I catch them occasionly. Sometimes I can't tell and I wait for it to open the. Remember I have to open it myself

Something about riding a packed tin can on a hot summer afternoon without AC with that distinct metallic rubber smell makes for a pleasant memory

V sets are my favourite by far. Very comfy trains. I'd love to see them remain forever.

@@monkewitbignose3238 Yeah. I’m sure they’re good in a technical sense, but from the “human” perspective as a passenger, knowing what the M sets are like, I’m really not keen. Especially the fixed seating. Everyone knows that’s a massive, massive no-no. The Tangaras are awful because of it, yet here we are with a bunch of smiling politicians telling people that 2 hour train rides facing backwards will be fantastic.

Spoiler for my next video: on the last day of my vacation to Australia, battling a terrible cold and worse weather, I rode the V and K sets because I knew they'd be gone next time I went.

The maintenance work should be praised

I would have absolutely no problem if the entire Sydney Suburban and Intercity network were operated with K sets and V sets. Those will go on nearly forever.

Bring back the red rattlers, you could open the windows and enjoy the summer breeze.

My favourite out of all that was the Intercity V sets. Used to live riding them from Katoomba to Central

And the best part of the Intercity V set is the safety chain on the driver’s compartment front door makes it look a little like a smiley face 😂😂

Greetings from the other side of the world! Our tram and metro fleet in Boston includes Type Eights (24 years old), Bombardiers (29 years old), Type Sevens (37 years old), Silverbirds (54 years old), and PCCs (78 years old)!

Man I would love to go to Sydney one day, it's a long way from the UK though

30 years ago, I went to Oz from the UK. And stayed. Australia's not what it used to be. Good place for a holiday but you wouldn't want to live there.

Just remember these are Australian made and are still running.

The 51 year old v sets got scrapped years ago the ones now are about 40 years old

The oldest v set in service is v21 I think it’s been in service for 46yrs

I believe they actually had a different type of V sets that are nearly 60 years old but were retired a few decades ago.. I may be wrong

@@tsetstransportseries 1 (prototypes) with drawn in 2005, some of the series 2 (production v sets) were retired in 2011-12 replaced with oscars

Series 1s were retired due to steel corrosion but those were the ones that are from 1960s @@tsetstransport

They were going to call it Citrail but changed their minds when they realised what Countryrail would be called.

There are news said Sydney Transport was importing new trains from China manufacturers and started testing it… I remembered that’s double-deck with white, black&red liveries

Quite sad to imagine no silvers sets at all, btw what’s the estimated retirement for tangara? Maybe 2030?

They're fine and safe so that's ok with me.

The old red sets lasted for over 50 years. We really need to give up on this 30 year life span thing and look to 50 years out of our rolling stock.

That’s the problem as shit ages it becomes so hard to maintain old equipment regardless of what it is. Parts become scarce bumping up the costs

I’ve been on lots of these, crazy knowing how old they are!

I remember in my youth that the year of manufacture for the old red rattlers was cast in a frame that was located along the base of the doors. Some had been built in the 1920's and were over 60 yrs old when they were retired.

And to this day I still love riding in them!

I think that’s the inter city train I rode from Sydney to Leura in the blue mountains! It was so beautiful

The older trains like the Blue Mountains line are far more comfortable still

As an Australia person I can confirm that those trains is actually in Australia

Time to get with the times sydney trains are horrible, I drive half my commute to avoid break downs signal issues and inevitable strikes. We need new trains and better planning.

in my train catching years it was the red rattlers and the S set being common stock. There were a lot more 4 cars services especially in the weekends.

The oldest V sets around 50 years old but the newer variants that are in service currently are about 30-40 years old

Every train is ageing at the same speed, btw.

We may hate on the tin can as of now but when they fully get rid of them... We'll miss em

Intercity V Sets and Goninan K Sets were my get high trains. Listening to house and synthwave really gave me a comical experience travelling with them. Good times 🖤🖤🖤

and yet despite their age, the intercity train seats are by far the most comfortable to sit and nap on.

I remember the Millennium train finally coming out in '03. They sounded so cool as they whirred along. They were supposed to be ready for the '00 Olympics but in typical government fashion, it was years late.

K sets and in ntercity V sets are planned to be replaced. K sets to be replaced by D sets and intercity V sets are being replaced too with intercity D sets with a maintenance facility being built in Dubbo.

Incorrect. The K sets are actually being replaced by H sets and the H sets are being replaced by the D sets. The maintenance in Dubbo is not for the D sets but actually for the new regional trains set to replace the ageing Endeavours, Xplorers and XPTs.

Wow, i didnt know the V sets were that old. The run down to the Gong is always better in a V set 😍
