🚨NOTE: This isn't a trip report, it's not a travel vlog. If you need someone to tell you what it's like to travel on a train, then by all means search for another video. I'm a train enthusiast, not a vlogger. If you want information about onboard amenities feel free to ask me, but for more detailed descriptions visit transportnsw.i...
In this video you will see what travelling aboard the overnight Sydney to Melbourne XPT service is like.
The overnight service departs Central station, Sydney, at 20:34 and arrives at Southern Cross Station, Melbourne at 07:30 the following day.
Sleeping berths are available for the overnight journey and I booked one to see what it is like, and in this video you will see the cabin itself in both seating and sleeping configurtion.

Thanks for the unhurried video, very enjoyable. One minor criticism `Alex's Train Channel' could be either in a smaller font or appear as a watermark so it's not confused with what you're referring to (e.g. a station name).

Enjoy it while you can because the replacement is on the way and it's gonna be crap like the QLD tilt train. The sleepers are the best way to do long distance train travel. cool video mate you've inspired me to catch the Brisbane-Sydney-Melbourne XPT once more before It's sent to the scrap pile. 👌

I am hoping to do the Brisbane to Sydney leg in the future, hopefully before these things get replaced. Couldn't agree with you more, I do enjoy the sleeper trains.

The Power cars are very similar to the Inter 125s in the UK.

They indeed are based on the HST's. Not sure if they are mechanicallly identical but certainly an almost spitting image.

XPT power cars are extensively modified for Australian conditions compared to IC125, in particular improved engine cooling, lower traction motor gearing to cope with the large gradients (hence the lower design speed 160 km/h), long travel more compliant suspension and a stronger front end to protect the front bogie from obstacles. The original Paxman Valenta Diesel engines were replaced around 2000 with Paxman VP85 but it has obviously been decided to not to re-engineer the power cars (including rewire, soft start from a stand etc) complete with MTU low emission engines from Germany as was done around 2006 in the UK for IC125. The reason may be the additional reliability available using a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) which may well have a Diesel engine under each carriage and therefore more redundancy. In the UK the IC125 can usually complete it’s journey on one power car in the event of either power car failing up to a top speed of around 110 mph on a level track but in Australia a failed power car can mean a complete failure since the train cannot always get up the steep grades with only one power car serviceable (and if attempted may result in over heating of the remaining good power car). The original spec. called for one power car to be able to start a train of 4 carriages on a 1 in 30 grade if I remember correctly. It would be nice to know what form the failures take but insufficient / poor maintenance may well be a factor considering how some power cars produce excessive smoke. It would be great if someone in the railway could advise on this in the comments. There is a good video here on KZread `XPT by COMENG’ (3 parts) telling the story of XPT and there is some pride taken in improving certain areas of the original IC125 power car design, in particular the weight distribution.

It would still be possible to do this trip in reverse on certain days of the week. ADL - MEL on the Overland and then MEL - SYD on the XPT. Both trains tend to be a bit late so not much chance if missing one.

We missed Albury. You were likely "racking up the Z's"(sleeping) when the train arrived at the former "break-of-gauge" station. And when arriving at Southern Cross, you missed out on pulling in to the *Shakespearean* platform, 2B(or not 2B, what was the question? LOL😁)

Good video. I have done this journey many times but only once in a sleeper ccabin. The privacy curtain to the corridor would not close and the bathroom was so small I had to open the door to change my mind. Only daylight travel for me since then.

Not too bad to shower in but probably best use the larger bathrooms at the coach ends (I imagine) to do a no. 2 (shelf / washout toilets which the XPT Sleeper cabins have are disgusting unless ventilation / extraction is exemplary). The larger bathrooms have good vacuum WCs.

Very nice. I'm in Australia end of March, and thinking of going to Melbourne from Sydney. I'm rarely in a hurry, so always enjoy a train ride. If I do a daytime ride, I can enjoy the scenery as well I think.

How absurd ! At least with Sleeper coaches the train can compete with Air travel but no chance without. If they change their mind the Sleeper coach(s) will probably have a Diesel engine under the floor, unlike the XPT.

It's actually odd to hear such a truck like sound coming from a loco. Used to Electro-Motive 710, 645, and FDL/GEVO engines from GE. They are lower speed diesels.. I hear tell that the new Cummins QSK95 rail engine sounds not unlike the (valenta? MTU?) Prime movers installed in the XPT from railfans recording the Siemens Charger locos. Sorry if you are not terribly familiar with these other engines. They are more common stateside than they are globally afaik, not to say they don't exist, I know the class 66 and GT36 and so forth use Electro-Motive engines.

  • @Martindyna

    @Martindyna

    4 жыл бұрын

@@scenicdepictionsofchicagolife XPTs were originally fitted with Paxman `Valenta' and then around 2000 these were replaced with Paxman `VP185'. Unlike in the UK a 3rd engine upgrade to German MTU low emission engines did not go ahead or perhaps wasn't even considered, possibly to increase the reliability by replacing the XPT with Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMUs) by CAF. These probably have one Diesel engine per carriage and so have more redunancy.

@@colinwilkie2279 I would have thought that a Day Sitter is more expensive than sitting in a 1st class normal coach. Day Sitters are 1st class I believe. When the Sleeper car is used as a Day Sitter I don't know how many people are allowed per berth, perhaps only 2 like the Sleeper. Perhaps someone will clarify.

You’re right, it’s not just Victoria it’s basically all of Australia and the world. But the are a lot of people who do graffiti. Plus it costs heaps of money to remove graffiti it’s not just like hose it off, another thing is that freight carriages, hoppers ect is something the government doesn’t really care to much about in terms of graffiti. With coal hoppers the graffiti is on the outside which isn’t a problem because the coal is in the inside. Same thing with grain hoppers, containers and ore hoppers and boxed ore trains. I’m totally agreeing with you but there’s a lot more to it than meets they eye.
