I agree this fandom is so soo fun to be in! Mostly because people here actively & vocally rejoice & express their appreciation over fanworks! Not even gonna lie that being a sydcarmy truther helped me get past a writer's block AND gave me confidence to try new things that I always wanted to try, but was always scared of doing (i.e, video editing). SO, THANK U!!! 🫶🏾

are you kidding me with this?? this is the last crossover i would've expected to see but it works so beautifully, i actually have tears in my eyes. you did SUCH a beautiful job with all the parallels and voiceovers (the "we are so similar" and the parallel of sydney with sugar next to elizabeth with georgiana are my favorite). and there's something so beautiful about the melody of "dawn" with the footage of them working together and cooking for the people they love. genuinely love what you did here💕

OMG I hadn't noticed. You're right. There is a parallelism. Definitely. But it's so well hidden by the writers, they only feed you crumbs every now and then, and then you have to put the pieces together to see the big picture from a certain distance and distinguish exactly what they meant, it's like a pointillism painting.

Wow. Pureseasalt, this must be the most clever, most insightful "discovery" I have seen of what is the double "always-there-in-plain-sight" beauty of The Bear: (1) The Bear as a work of Art alluding to earlier masterpieces and (2) the matter of the heart between Carmy and Sydney that is the beating heart and compelling matter of this mashup of genres: allegory...passion play... and rom-com. How audacious and insightful of you to capture it all: the two couples, separated by centuries, are in fact deeply linked: they both ARE iconic, wounded, brilliant, skittish, incandescent, and of and for the ages. And the writers of The Bear ARE alluding to works ranging from Pride and Prejudice to Botticelli -- for example, the now iconic "under-the-table" confession of Carmy to Sydney is a literal, painstaking recreation of Dosso Dossi's painting of two lovers in repose, "Allegory of Fortune." Pride and Prejudice is the Ur-Rom Com with ample social commentary. But then, so is The Bear -- and the latter of the two, The Bear, is also an allegory of Art as the vehicle of Transformation and a Passion Play in which L-O-V-E is the "Fire" of that transformation. After all, what Michelin-starred chef gives half his restaurant to a startlingly brilliant but until then largely unknown sous chef, without her ever asking for it? And what is Carmy's jaw-dropping, the-world-stood-still, "under-the-table" confession to Sydney but the summation of his true feelings for her and the core flame (the "Bear" if you like) as it were, that Sydney has lit, and I quote him verbatim: "I couldn't do this without you...I WOULDN'T EVEN WANT TO DO THIS WITHOUT YOU." Ahhh, yes, but then it was never really about the "brigade," the "chaos menu," or even the restaurant. It was ALWAYS about HER: Carmy's "slow-burn," dawning realization of who SHE really is. He fears it. He flees it. He denies it. But he is wholly owned by it. And in his giving Sydney that piece of him -- "The Bear" in restaurant and his own namesake-- we see that it can only flicker and gather heat and light as the "under-the-table" affair of the heart between Carmy and Sydney becomes conscious, spoken, real: he might not even dare to know it , but that moment between Carmy and Sydney, that gossamer-thin, hardly veiled confession, under that table (stand in for relationship) whose weight BOTH Carmy and Sydney take turns supporting, is HIS pivotal rendezvous with Truth and Sydney, and nothing less. And what was that but quite literally.... "Surely you must know. It was all for you." Pride, Prejudice, and Transformation. Indeed.

I...? I'm actually genuinely, pleasantly speechless over this. Wow. What a wonderful summation of the beauty that is Sydney and Carmy's relationship! And that you gathered all of that with this honestly, initially silly idea that I had about Syd/Carmy and Lizzie/Darcy parallels? But yes! Yes! ABSOLUTELY. 100% to everything you said! "They both ARE iconic, wounded, brilliant, skittish, incandescent, and of and for the ages" If I could just highlight that and put it in plaque! Because that's exactly what drew me to Sydney and Carmy in the first place. These deeply flawed, like-minded but still compassionate, kind, and ambitious individuals who push and pull each other. It makes for a dynamic that is such a joy to witness! All the more that neither of them seems to be aware of what they're doing to each other! (Sadly, a lot of the viewers are not aware of it either, or at least they don't see the interesting and rich storytelling lying dormant in their narrative. I echo your words: 'But then it was never really about the "brigade," the "chaos menu," or even the restaurant. It was ALWAYS about HER') And I have to tell you that I was pointing, clapping, snapping, and grinning like an idiot the whole time I was reading this! Especially: "After all, what Michelin-starred chef gives half his restaurant to a startlingly brilliant but until then largely unknown sous chef, without her ever asking for it?" EXACTLY! Like, c'mon! Sydney's place in the Bear and in Carmy's life is truly unique. They have no familial or past connections. They are strangers to one another. And, yet, here she is. Their connection is pure. It is built on trust, dreams, and love, love, love. This is also the first time I heard of the "Allegory of Fortune" and I totally get it now! Jaw-dropped when I looked it up and finally saw it for myself! Ahck! Before I ramble on, thank you! THANK YOU SO MUCH! Also, can I post this on tumblr? The Syd/Carmys need to see this!!

@@pureseasalt-dw9we : Chère pureseasalt, please excuse my tardy response to your incredibly generous, witty, warm shout-out. And it is one of those perhaps not-so-odd coincidences that it was I, actually, who, upon seeing your wondrous juxtaposition of Pride and Prejudice and The Bear, was thus beset with an extended fit of "I was pointing, clapping, snapping, and grinning like an idiot the whole time I was [watching] this!" First, permit me to speak to what you have achieved, which, I think attains a beauty in the way Sydney does, and as in the case of Sydney's apparent incomprehension as to how startlingly beautiful she really is, I am not certain you realize how beautiful your tribute/commentaire truly is. So, as I am going to go "How do I love thee," as it were, with this "Let me count the ways": First and foremost, while silliness -- think Monty Python, Michele Buteau, Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, et al.--can be very beautiful, there is nothing "silly" about beauty. YOUR homage is audacious, alarmingly brilliant, hauntingly beautiful: the only "silly" thing about it is that of all the wonderful, insightful Carmy-Sydney "ship" pieces on KZread, that it took me this long to find yours: the sole statement that so poignantly interweaves the love of cinéma, literary narrative, Romanticism (the artistic/philosophical movement), and late post-Modernism, sans its often intrusive ironies. Next, as a professional writer, translator, and musician, I am obsessed with space, silences, the play of time in any given piece or genre of art. For example, Joe Pass, Melanie Faye, Beatle George Harrison, Prince, or authors Proust, the great (and frighteningly beautiful) Zadie Smith, Chateaubriand, et al., all know when to unleash the lexicon and when to let the silence and space speak and sing. So. Do. You. Brava! Your curatorship, editing, musical/literary choices and sensibilities emphasize, illuminate, and reveal the continuities, the transcendent, and the power of connectedness that actually link two seemingly separate works, from two separate centuries: Elizabeth and Darcy, Carmy and Sydney, in your audaciously tender, rambunctiously wise rendering, are at one: they are archetypes and individuals, passing the light and the arc of the journey from one century, place, and time to another. The sole thing "silly" about this is that nobody has seen fit to make this connection prior. You did. So, let me address the "ship" of Carmy and Sydney, if I might. I agree so very strongly with your wonderfully compassionate and sagaciously shrewd assessment as to who they are and what they mean to each other. I would like to add these thoughts for your consideration. In my view and experience, the most powerful, evocative " ships" go back to Shakespeare, course through, naturally, Austen, and sail in up through classic "screwball comedies" of Hepburn and Tracy, right up through Shonda's near psychedelic, but far more realistic nineteenth century multiracial Britain, than most viewers would realize [full disclosure: I am a Northern English-Latinx biracial, albeit one who took his degrees at Columbia University in NYC] . What links ALL of these works is that their passionately "shipped "couples, the heart of the proto-rom coms to pre-rom coms, were and forever remain in some fundamental ways in conflict not so much with each other, but rather the society that would force them together, which paradoxically keeps them apart. Consider: Shakespeare's Kate Minola never really becomes that "tamed shrew." Instead, she remains a full-fledged, complex woman whom Petruchio not so much “tames" but rather loves more than he does the patriarchy; Austen's Darcy and Lizzie find love in defiance not so much of each other but rather of the terrifying patriarchy that wagers love as the deal spoiler over the prized-over-everything and everyone: property, status, and affluence. The greatest popular culture "ships" in the past, say, ten years -- in my view, at least -- are a Rick and Michonne; a Helen Sharpe and Max Goodwin, even the goofy and yet, paradoxically strikingly potent "Strange New Worlds" Spock and Chapel: ALL these pairings are both archetypes of non-conformity, rebelliousness, "Otherness," AND recognizable, intimate humanity (what is "Spock" but an allegory of biracial/bi-cultural personhood, and Chapel, the independent, driven, intellectually brilliant and questing woman, time immemorial?). Enter Carmy and Sydney. Well, there is the too OBVIOUS juxtaposition, the noire et blanc of things that a good part of our not-so-good society will simply never countenance, much less bless and protect. And yet, what makes their "ship, " Carmy and Sydney, so incredibly potent as well is their actual profoundly deep commonalities: both are of immigrant backgrounds; both are shaped by family trauma; both are preternaturally gifted with artistic genius and ambition; both are wounded; and both are far, far more beautiful to behold and encounter than either Carmy and, especially Sydney, seem capable of realizing. How is it that two such wounded but brilliant, "Othered" and yet galvanizing individuals be so compelling, so poignantly present, so hauntingly distant, and so heartbreakingly beautiful together? The most powerful "ships," from Petruchio and Kate to Darcy and Elizabeth; from Pat and Mike to Helen and Max, right up to Carmy and Sydney is, I argue, that these couples are BOTH archetypes of Transformation and intimately, deeply, irrefutably human beings, for whom the stakes of love are not only political, cultural, social but also at the core of what it is to be human: to have and to hold meaning, connection, love not in vain, but as Coltrane put it, transformational and transcendent by and in the light of Love Supreme. And these whom we ship through the ages are in no small way versions of people whom we know, whom we have known, whom we want to know: they are above all, perhaps, some versions of ourselves in all that we fear and still yet might find the courage to aspire to and become. Now, as for those viewers who cannot see what is manifestly evident between Carmy and Sydney, let me state perhaps the too obvious: many will feel far more comfortable with Carmy pairing with Claire. I have read some viewers actually "shipping" Sydney and Marcus, which , however Marcus might feel about Sydney, is NEITHER the harbour nor the distant shore for any "ship" between Sydney and the Ronin, Marcus -- who, startlingly, might very well be the once hibernating and now awakening genius-artist on par with both Carmy and Sydney. But I digress. The point is this: neither Claire nor Marcus nor anybody else casts the luminous , strikes the fancy, touches heart and soul in the universe of The Bear as do Carmy and Sydney for each other. The chemistry, nay, alchemy, between Carmy and Sydney; the elaborate staging, or should i say re-staging of both Dossi's "Allegory of Fortune" and Botticelli's "Venus and Mars (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_and_Mars_%28Botticelli%29#/media/File:Venus_and_Mars_National_Gallery.jpg) for Carmy's rendezvous with Truth and his love for Sydney in that mysteriously beautiful "under-the-table" scene, should settle the matter once and for all; the very luminosity of Carmy and Sydney in each other's company; their shared artistry; their literally exclusive language unto themselves; their fights and break-ups; their heartfelt reconciliations; Carmy's flashbacks of HER, always HER, Sydney; the way he looks at her, THAT way: longing, awe, hunger, fear, DESIRE; the way she thrums and glows in his presence: to deny the epically undeniable of what and who Carmy and Sydney are to each other, and what and why that is so vital to us, is beyond a failure of intellect and soul. Such a denial is to become and to assist in the very forces that have so traumatized Carmy and haunted Sydney in the first place. So, I return to YOUR enchanting, thought-provoking, and deeply moving piece. If there be "silliness" to it, that "silliness" is the riot of sense and sensibility YOUR tribute evoked: I smiled while watching your wise, audacious revelation of a tribute. I had to smile at the sheer brilliance of it all, YOUR brilliance. After all, the wry smile of recognition is the only way to complement one's teared-up eyes upon experiencing something so incandescently true, tender, and fearlessly beautiful. THANK YOU. As to those who continue to DENY what is so manifestly undeniable about who and what Carmy and Sydney are to each other,I conclude with these final observations: 1. Claire is lovely, intelligent, and kind. But she is of Carmy's shared past, a past that nearly destroyed him. His interlude with her is a poignant but a doomed attempt to resurrect the world in which only the likes of his departed father and brother now live, James Joyce's realm of The Dead. 2. By contrast, Sydney is the Shock of the New: she is the warrior-redeemer of ancient European and African myth; and in the arc of the voyage, she, Sydney, is the distant shore of all that Carmy seeks but has never really known: Connection. Joy. Love. So, yes, of course, Carmy is deeply in love with Sydney. And what is that Crossing to which I allude? Well, you know what it is more than most and probably a good deal more bravely than I ever have. But I will take my best shot: The proverbial "ship" is that which is the vehicle to the metaphor's tenor. The "ship" replicates that which we must undertake in the crucible of choice as whether to live or merely exist: The "Crossing?" it is that most radical and transgressive of voyages: that quitting of unworthy empires and barren lands for a distant shore, the genesis of every "To Boldly Go" ever worth undertaking : Love.
