Sydney was developed in such an unplanned, ad-hoc fashion right from its founding in 1788 that it has no street which can unequivocally claim recognition as its "main" thoroughfare. I suppose Macquarie Street and George Street, for different reasons, could share that status. I lived in Sydney from 1982 to 1987 and I have to say that my memory of George Street bears little resemblance to the ambling, pedestrian-friendly experience it provides today. Back then it was choked 24/7 with vehicular traffic, and people would scurry along the too-narrow footpaths, assailed by the noise and exhaust fumes emanating from all the petrol and diesel engines. It's sure good to see that things have now changed so much for the better.
