Topic: OPEL'S EXCLUSION FROM "THE MADCAP LAUGHS". MIKE WATKINSON ~ When Syd transferred all the four-tracks to eight track for the final mixing, [Malcolm] Jones noticed that 'Opel' was among them: 'Syd obviously intended to include it on the album. I still think, to this day, that it is one of his best tracks and it's tragic that it wasn't included on "The Madcap Laughs" album.'

On a distant shore, miles from land Stands the ebony totem in ebony sand A dream in a mist of grey... On a far distant shore... The pebble that stood alone And driftwood lies half buried Warm shallow waters sweep shells So the cockles shine... A bare winding carcase, stark Shimmers as flies scoop up meat, an empty way... Dry tears... Crisp flax squeaks tall reeds Make a circle of grey in a summer way, around man Stood on ground... I'm trying I'm trying to find you! To find you I'm living, I'm giving To find you, To find you I'm living, I'm living I'm trying, I'm giving

Syd was a wonderful and unique songwriter - something I've thought since I first heard The Piper At The Gates of Dawn in 1975.

I don't know the month but I'm quite sure of the year! Which would have been 8 years after it was released. Yes, i'm British but I grew up in Canada, which is where I heard the album, as part of the Nice Pair compilation (The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn/A Saucerful Of Secrets)

I once spoke to someone who lived during the 60's and he said when they were high or tripping and someone got real deep they'd say "Don't get real on me man." Some things never change. Or do they? Syd is fantastic.

Topic ~ OPEL'S EXCLUSION FROM "THE MADCAP LAUGHS" ORIGINAL ALBUM ~ Quote by MIKE WATKINSON from "Crazy Diamond SYD BARRETT & the Dawn of Pink Floyd" ~ "Questioned about the exclusion of 'Opel', [David] Gilmour cannot remember the track and wrongly assumes it to be an alternative title for one of the released songs. Sadly, it appears that during the undignified scramble of the final recording and mixing, this classic Barrett track was overlooked." I personally agree with author Mike Watkinson! When David Gilmour and Roger Waters got involved, as co producers of 'The Madcap Laughs' sessions, they showed a lack of care for the project. For example they included the painful and shambolic segue of 'She Took A Long Cold Look', 'Feel' and 'If It's In You' on the album instead of 'Opel' and the most recently discovered 'Bob Dylan Blues'. This is, in my humble opinion, how the album should have been released ~ "THE MADCAP LAUGHS"~ SIDE ONE 1. TERRAPIN 2. NO GOOD TRYING 3. LOVE YOU 4. NO MAN'S LAND 5. DARK GLOBE 6. HERE I GO SIDE TWO 1. OCTOPUS 2. GOLDEN HAIR 3. LONG GONE 4. OPEL 5. BOB DYLAN BLUES 6. LATE NIGHT.

David has expressed regret for how he handled MadCap- still the damage was done. I think their patience was extremely tried by Syd, and there was an incredible lack of understanding about mental illness then. Hindsight is 20/20

Hello Antony, If you'd like to, please read my comments on the upload for ~ "She Took A Long Cold Look" uploaded by Leadhead444. It highlights, in my humble opinion, the fact that David Gilmour really botched The Madcap Laughs release by not noticing, while looking for material for the album, the classic 'Opel' and 'Bob Dylan Blues'!!! Keep up the good work in keeping fans informed of this most gifted artist and musician. ROGER KEITH "SYD" BARRETT".

I think this song would be just perfect if it had a bit more production and sounded a bit more atmospheric, you know, like, idk, something Richard Wright would do. I imagine a bit of echo in his voice, a bit more bass and maybe some shy electric guitar riffs here and there accompanying the acoustic guitar and some effects (Idk, like, rain, it could sound just like I imagine Syd's lonely apartment room would feel at this pont). Something like "Late Night" from The Madcap Laughs record. It would sound just like the night. Haunting and wonderful. It just feels a bit incomplete for me the way it is. But if the intention was to keep it a bit more personal, close and eye to eye, i guess that's a valid thing. I wish I had the expertise to do a version like this, using the original track and just overdubbing the whole thing. The audio quality is superb, btw.

The healthy Syd Barrett was very creative. He was a talented, gifted young man. Unfortunately, he had the wrong friends. He started taking drugs very early on. The first record with Pink Floyd The Piper...... is a good record. Syd wrote 52 songs. Unfortunately, he took LSD several times a week... That's too much. No brain can handle that!!! He failed as a painter and musician!!! At 22, Syd was a sick person. ... He became lethargic... He was mentally absent... He didn't live in the here and now..... He could no longer play the right scale.... He was no longer productive... He had thinking and speaking disorders..... He wanted to climb walls.... He wanted to become a doctor and get married.... He wanted to start a cult.... He wanted to hit his sister Rosemary on the head with his guitar 🎸... Psychiatry wasn't ready at that time... Syd had dropped out!!!! 🎞️🎥 His whole life should be made into a movie.... I don't know if he ever found redemption or peace for his soul ??? He lived in an inner and outer prison....
