Swords & Wizardry Complete (Revised) [A

Ойындар

Mythmere games has released a fantastic revised edition of Swords & Wizardry Complete. It sports a fresh layout, a lot of new art, and is a joy to read. If you’re interested at ALL in old school gaming you might want to check this out.
I have a review copy of Symbaroum on my shelf, which is why the “paid promotion” is checked for this video. I backed Swords & Wizardry on Kickstarter.
CORRECTION ##
In the video I identify Erol Otus as the cover artist for Swords & Wizardry Complete Revised when, in fact, the artist is Del Teigeler. Erol Otus is the cover artist for the POD soft cover only.

Great overview. The fast turnaround is even more impressive when you consider that many of the best updates in this new edition weren't part of the original plan and were added to the manuscript during the KS campaign. The optional morale system, the number appearing and lair percentage stats for the monsters, and the magic item creation guidelines, for example.

I also backed this Kickstarter and I was shocked how quickly it was fulfilled and delivered to me. Granted, I live in the same general metro area, so that may have contributed to the speed in which I received it. In the same month, I, pledged to other Kickstarter‘s and I’m going to have to wait until the middle of next year for fulfillment. It’s a great book and great game. Thanks for the excellent review!

Awesome review. Can't wait to get my book (those of us that also backed physical copies of Adventures are still waiting on the official offset print book, as it will all ship together). - Just a minor correction. The new S&W Logo on the book is done by Del Teigeler (he shared his pencil sketch of it on the official S&W Facebook group awhile back on Jul 19, 2023). - Otis did the art for the Print-on-Demand Only Covers.

Great review! Interesting mix of classes. It's essentially the original three plus the five from the supplements, then oddly, just the Ranger from The Strategic Review. Do the elves in this game have to decide which class (Fighter or Magic-User) at the start of each adventure or do they act as a true multi-class?

The notes and the alternatives and the well-thought out consideration for what works best in the framework of the original games made it an easy choice to get. The price and the speed of release didn't hurt, either. Regarding alignment, I've tended to like the Law Chaos only thing (or frankly make up my own or jettison the whole thing), because it allows for a sort of externally detectable alignment, with the mistrust that differences may cause, but no certainty with regard to the sort of pre-meditated cleansing attitude that the two axis system seems to cause in certain groups. Law may see chaos as often "bad" but they may also recognize that chaos can have good people in it, and some of them may actually help law break out of too-rigid thinking. Better, I tend to treat alignment as a sort of thing pushed on you at birth, it's a thing you can inherit, and you can work against this thing hanging over your head, but you still might have cultural associations that would justify an alignment language or cosmic powers claiming you. If you don't want it, you might even work toward the alignment changing, which would be a huge deal.

Oh, and regarding movement, OD&D and AD&D (both editions) crucially use the original Gygaxian one minute round concept, which was shortened considerably in the Basic D&D lines (Holmes, B/X, BECMI). So 60' to 120'/minute is still actually quite slow in a realistic sense, but a third that pace is practically snail-like. If you're house ruling ten second rounds, however, you can easily divide by three.

@@DMTalesTTRPG A perfectly easy mistake to make, since the first official product where a ten second round was used (the Holmes rulebook), didn't actually call it out as a change. Anyone who learned from it or any of its successors (B/X, BECMI, the Rules Cyclopedia, etc.) might naturally assume it was always that way. Personally, I thought for ages that the one minute round was dreamed up specifically for AD&D.

Better? I don’t know if that’s how I’d phrase it. There are different things which provide for a slightly different game play style. The single saving throw is nice, the presentation of different ways to do things in game (like initiative and combat) is cool. The presentation of both ascending and descending AC is well done. The lower bonuses for ability scores make them matter less for rolls, which is different than I am used to. S&W feels more loose. BFRPG is by no means a heavy system, but S&W leans even more into “rulings, not rules.”
