@@datpudding5338 not really, from an study i saw, the shape of the tip doesn't matter, as long as the edge is sharp, an katana stabs better then an rondel dagger for clothe, since the reinforced tip is for anti mail/plate, i don't know how an longsword would fare though.

  • @datpudding5338

    @datpudding5338

    Жыл бұрын

@@stefthorman8548 a study that ignores human anatomy like the existence of wrists? Cuz that's how it sounds to be done. Do you have a source? You gotta differentiate between different rondel daggers aswell, some had blade-ish points, others were literally just very long bodkin tips and and triangular cross-sections were around just aswell. In pretty much every regard these were heavily optimised for stabbing - hence their most common use case was to make sure that one armored guy wouldn't stand up again. It's entire design purpose was to be yanked through mail and gambeson in gaps of full plate. Therefore it's literally only really feasible to even hold that thing in a hammer grip - a reverse hammer grip if you got wrists - making the dagger effectively a war pick without a handle and history showed already why we used this type over other designs for stabbing but still go with war picks and pole arms when penetrating plate is the goal - even the modern ice pick utilises the same basic idea one literally needs the leverage of a handle to go through plate. Hence why even with a long sword the mordhau was thing to make a sword into a makeshift war hammer/pick depending on the cross-guard design. And there isn't only one type of longsword either but an entire catalogue of blade geometries. Generally speaking they are a thrust-optimised sword design without diminishing cutting capability too much - just like the rondel dagger mostly to thrust into gaps of full plate armor thereby penetrating mail and dense cloth aswell as going deep enough to not just tickle the opponent. When stabbing or thrusting you generally don't want a curved blade as this offsets the pressure angle and rises stresses in wrists and blade. Picks and similarly built designs get away with that due to the curvature being layed out in a way that mitigates most of the angular offset and a way sturdier blade cross-section than a katana can ever dream of. None of these features are to be found with a katana. When talking about cutting the tip shouldn't even be used as the most effective cutting area of practically any sword is somewhere around the first third of the blade going from the tip. A curved blade is generally better in cutting than a straight one - that's simple physics as a positive curve always got less touching surface area at the point of contact aswell as an inherently more aggressive angle of attack compared to the flat angle a straight blade gets as soon as either enters the target. Minimising this contact area is pretty much the point of even modern cutting technologies around the world as found in wood cutting axes, paper cutting machines, drill bits, saw teeth an so on. Pretty much always angled or curved to reduce cutting load while enhancing cutting capability. Another piece of evidence is the heavy reliance on sword design heavily optimised either for thrusting or cutting in unarmored dueling and self-defence (prevalent examples being the Messer, Rapier, Sabers etc.). Cutters like the Messer having a fairly wide blade and mostly curved edge in the cutting area while thrusters like the rapier featured straight rather thin blades with sturdy and sharp points (like a rondel dagger). With pretty much any thrusting/stabbing oriented design throughout history you can see the same scheme no matter where and when on the world we look or even which material doesn't really matter. The one weapon that was and in modern variations is still used is the spear - a weapon literally being all about thrusting. Around the ages and around the world they always boiled down to what is effectively a dagger on a stick. Especially the metal variants were daggers on sticks to the point where with many designs you could literally just use the spear point as a dagger. Other pole arms capable of thrusting also had their spikes in a diamond shape just like many rondel daggers and so many other already mentioned. Another example of angled and curved edges being better cutters are arrow heads if you need to cut through "light" tissue you go with broad heads, if you wanna penetrate denser materials like tightly stuffed cloth (gambeson) mail or plate you choose a puncturing/thrusting optimised design like the bodkin head. I really don't think that a single study that remains to be referenced disproves international observations of what works best for which purpose collected over millenia and is backed up by by everyday use in modern engineering

Fun fact: in medivel times the main cause of death to an armored man wasen't from the slashes themselves but from broken bones and internal bleeding. The only thing that can get through plate armor with chainmail is a halberd but even that was used for its weight as a crushing weapon to shatter bone. The vest might keep you safe from slashes but its still gonna hurt like hell getting hit by that

You are aware that an arrow can pierce a kevlar vest, right? There's a little thing called ballistics, and it says the reason that happens is bullets work differently from arrows. The main thing bullets do Is not actually cutting fibers but trying to go inbetween them, thats the reason kevlar is so strong against them cus their fibers are stretched and highly strong in that regard. Arrows just cut fibers, imagine that, plus stretched out fibers. So a kevlar vest will stop an arrow, only when its cut a tideway In your insides

Bullet proof vest are often not always stab or slash proof especially if it's only Kevlar buy that doesn't mean it can't be both either. Reason is if it's to stop bullets the way they weave the Kevlar is more loose so it catches the bullet and better spread out energy so the bullet doesn't go through. If they weave it tighter it would be more stab proof but less bullet proof. Or it could have 2 different kind of layers. If they had a ceramic or steel plate underneath that Kevlar vest you would have both stab and bullet proof-ness but usually those make it much heavier to carry.

For the record - you should try a slow cut. It's surprisingly effective, and surprisingly not uncommon in practice. Yes, when we think of 1v1 sword combat, we think of ranges at around 1 sword's length away, or more - but in large scale battles maintining rangr wasn't a possibility for everyone at all times, so naturally you'd expect a lot of people falling to sword cuts in what amounts to essenting wrestling with blades in hand. And the thing is, the trick to cutting fabrix armor is blade contact. So I'd expect both the katana and the arming sword to do a lot better when used in such fashion. Edit: also, this might be the secret to creating truly cutproof armor. Embed one or two layers of steel wire mesh within the kevlar, thereby interrupting the cutting of the fibers, without increasing weight or range of motion.

I was just about to recommend stabbing before you said you’d try it! Kevlar is made up of fibrous layers (correct me if I’m wrong it’s been awhile since I researched Kevlar) meaning that cutting isn’t exactly 100% effective, but thin, sharp puncturing weapons (like ice picks or even particularly sharp knitting needles) are really good at getting through it. The more things change, the more things say the same, I guess?

I'm not surprised. Textile armour was very common in history and showed its usefulness a lot. If you want to get through it with a cut though you should definitely use better weapons. Get a well made great sword or poleaxe and have it professionally sharpened and professionally wielded against the dummy and you'll see the kevlar completely destroyed and unable to protect the wearer.

That's why they have things called rifle plates where a sharp projectile will hit the ceramic or steel plate. So the answer is can you push an ice pick or a sharp knife or even a screwdriver straight through a couple of 3A best, yes absolutely. Will that same 3A body armor stop a pistol round, yes.

I think a Falcon should've been included. While other bladessre often designed for more multipurpose use, a falchion is exclusively (afaik) engineered for cutting so it would be interesting to see how it compares

Yes the japanese Longsword specifically designed to do little more than CUT and SLASH through flesh and most padded armors and little else is - unsurprisingly - capable or cutting through modern blade proof armors pretty well. Though to be fair, Kevlar is more for stab proofing, isn't it?

This just made me realize that the katana and other curved swords are probably best because the curve gives a better cut against cloth. If guns never made it past muskets then kevlar might've eventually been equivalent to super armor

The curve only matters for extreme examples like Indian tulwars. The curvature on katana is negligible and is not going to have any noticeable effect on cutting. Katana cut well by virtue of their geometry, not by being curved.

Knives and stabbing attacks are far more of a threat to kevlar. Especially to older makes of vests that police still do or used to wear. Obviously the vests provide a lot of protection they just aren't literally impenetrable.

Depends on the armor manufacturer. Some are better then others. Some are shit should never be worn. I've seen blades cut through kavlar like it was butter while other times it just tickles the wearer. The armor was the same level. However with just a vest instead of a plate. You should be slightly more worried about stab wounds then cuts.

You're not wrong, but also a super heavy armor. I heard some setting has a non-newtonian fluid laced with titanium. That could be solid.

While the katana did get close if you were actually swinging that at someone wearing Kevlar they'd presumably be moving away from you at the same time, lessening the force of your swing

So before katana fanboys say something wrong, the blade is heavier so that's why it cut deeper. It was not because it was sharper.
