Giving a like for the idea, but if you ever want to retry this i can toss a couple of tips for the shield user: Do not block going backward, having a shield and a shorter weapon allows you to keep the opponents weapon busy after a block with the shield while closing the gap to attack at the same time. That is the main advantage of two weapon fighting. If you backpedal with a shield you are using only 1 tool, your shield, while the sword does nothing. It's clear that the shield user understood how this works because in the second half the shield user managed to land hits while blocking. In order to better achive what stated above, try to keep your shield arm stretched forward, this will create a better cone of protection. This is usually done with bucklers but the same principle applies with this shield (looks like a rotella) as well.

As a HEMA teacher, i would recommend to extend the shield more. The closer the shield is to the body, the smaler the area that it covers. The Italian source for the Rotella (the type of shield used here) show the shield stretched out just below the eye line with the fencer leaning forward. Schildwache Potsdam have some good videos on that.

It's a umbrella term for the reconstruction of various European Martial Arts, that have gone out of use and have no living tradition anymore. As a HEMA & Kenjutsu practitioner, who's primary HEMA weapon is sword and buckler.. the sword and shield should be able to win against the katana 8 times out of 10. This video was great at showing how skill level matters more than weapon choice, and was still very enjoyable to watch. Once the shield user adjusted to the dual wield aspect of the weapon, they began winning most of the bouts.

'Always keep the shield between yourself and the opponent.' The shield wielder learned that quite quickly - and also that he has to go further in because the katana wielder had a considerable reach advantage. I know the throwing up or behind of the shields looks great in movie fights, but these are movie fights, as you know. But if you never did sword and one-handed sword before your brain takes what it has seen somewhere first 😊 But yoz learned really quickly and thus gave a good demonstration WHY sword and shield is used in this way. Would be interesting to see this with a buckler instead a rodella-like shield. Great video again. Thanks for your great work.

Using the edge to bash kinda only works well with shields that are light enough to weaponize to begin with though. The reason it's "the spartan wield" is because of the sheer heft and size, making them more suited for a shield-wall technique than anything (although it wasn't impossible to bash either). It's especially so in the case of heavy Roman shields, and even kite shields to some extent.

Hey, HEMA practitioner here. When you go to attack using sword and board bring the shield forward to cover the strike rather than bringing it back in the “counter weight” type fashion done in the video. Also it’s better to keep your shield held more forward to make it easier to intercept incoming attacks. On of the things I like to do against an opponent with a single weapon as in this situation is to use the shield to punch the opponent’s weapon away while simultaneously following behind it at a slightly different angle with an attack of your own. Typically to either the leg or the gut. The shield can attack as well just like the sword can defend. Get used to moving both of them at the same time. One last piece of advice, practice either swapping your lead leg back or literally kicking yourself in the butt with your lead leg to get it out of the way of those lower hits. Really cool video, very much enjoy style match ups like this!

  • @silverknight1089

    @silverknight1089

Sorry, one last thing I meant to mention. A couple times the shield user brings the shield directly in front of their face effectively blinding themselves. Rather than blocking directly up, push your shield out and towards the direction of the incoming attack at about a 45° angle. You’ll actually intercept the attack sooner giving you more time to move/counter attack, AND you maintain vision of your opponent. This is actually the meaning behind an old saying “never let a Scotsman lend you his targe” (a type of round shield). In a duel if you didn’t have a shield (probably meaning you weren’t proficient with one) Scotsmen would offer to lend you one. They they would feint a swing at your head, you’d block up blinding yourself, then they’d redirect and you’d take a hit to the thigh you couldn’t see coming.

I would’ve picked a center grip shield for better coverage and mobility to block those low blows and conceal more area behind the out-stretched shield. They also allow for more aggressive shield use with bashes, having the shield at an angle (with the edge pointing at the opponent) to restrict more of their attack angles and turning the shield on impact to make attacks glance off it and leave the opponent open to counter attacks. The strapped shield is better when its larger or in armored combat where its only necessary to block heavy impacts from Polearms.

Amazing video, as always. Love the camera work and the editing really puts punches to the sparring. I would say to the sword and shield fighter: try fighting sword-hand forward, or even with a head-on stance. When sparring with sword and a forearm shield, the shield mainly blocks openings. Unless you're shield bashing your opponent (which is dangerous in sparring), the strategy is mostly to use the fact that your opponent can't hit you where your shield is to limit their options and bait them into taking a predictable line that you can counter. However, against an opponent with a longer weapon, they have the measure advantage. There were several exchanges where you successfully parried and reposted, but were just out of reach because you were swinging from your backfoot. Moreover, there were a couple of exchanges where you got hit around your shield that, if you had bound him with your sword, you could've continued in the exchange with additional cover from your shield. Once again, love y'alls work.

Not true, two hands means more cutting power and control in most situations. A hard a half sword provides just as much versatility and agility, if not more, if you are taught how to use it correctly. A two handed European sword in properly trained hands would be just as fast and agile as any kenjitsu practitioner. This is a perfect case study of "its not the weapon but the person using it and their level of competency with it".

If your arms get tangled, you've lost. 3) Each limb protects itself. If an attack comes at your leg, move the leg out of the way rather than committing an arm to defending it. 4) Shield guards your head, never your face. Don't blind yourself with your own shield. 5) Break the rules to win. Rules 1 through 4 are good guidelines, but if a situation arises where you can win by breaking one, do it.

The shield bearer (HEMA practitioner) could be far more aggressive in his approach, closing the distance and use the shield as a secondary weapon, enter into a stabbing motion, not just try to be defensive and use slashing motions. Also the HEMA sword is two edged and should be used in both directions. Respect to the Kenjutsu practitioner, he adapted nicely to the attacks, though he could have been a little less big in his movements and more committed to his attacks. Also not having a kiai in an attack though by the Kenjutsu practitioner felt weird and probably gave an additional impression of a lack of commitment to the strikes.

Try to get your hands on a Roman style Scutum (tower shield), and see how that fairs. It provides a better range of motion, and allows you to also use the shield itself as a weapon.

If someone holds a scutum, they basically have only 1 side they could attack from while still using the shield.

@@batteredwarrior Wrong. There may have been a turning point during the renaissance where more shields were strapped to the forearm, but the majority of shields were center boss gripped shields during most of the medieval period. For example, all viking era round shields were center boss grip. Most kite shields were as well. Many had the option of both grips. There are distinct disadvantages to using strapped shields that make them unfavorable for 1 on 1 combat, thus center-gripped shields never really went out of style.

If he stood with his sword hand closer to his opponent he wouldn’t have issues with the range as we saw him in the beginning. However trying to fight as counter fighter with the shield hand forward did make sense. But he usually had to blitz forward or let his opponent come to him to land anything.

this is incorrect. you specifically want it out in front of you, not tucked in, measure(engagement range) is possibly the most important thing to control in a swordfight, the closer you tuck your weapon and/or shield into your body, the closer your opponent can safely get, and the less time you have to react and respond to whatever it is they are doing. you want your weapon out in front, presenting a constant threat, and you want your shield closing the most attack lines as you can at once, it is impossible to close all lines at one time. Through basic geometry holding it out in front of you away from your body provides a larger area of protection than sucking it in close.

That's a really cool demonstration. I love this channel. Sidenote, I think a buckler handled from the centre would offer better extensions to counter the wide angles of the katana's attacks. A strapped shield covers the body well, but it's also less wieldy. Against- a two-handed weapon, you want to reach into their attack and open them up for your own riposte. Also, in defending against lower leg (tibia) strikes, I would take inspiration from scottish broadsword and practice "shifting the leg", as prescribed by Angelo. Both combattants in this video display excellent footwork and could apply this technique with ease.

  • @AvianSavara

    3 ай бұрын

@@engmed4400 Scutum and gladius would be great for covering the centre mass and thighs, but it's heavy thing and the user ought to be wary of quick strikes against the foot, and be ready to defend the head with the gladius. The fighter should aim to close the distance as quick as possible and deny the katana's range and cut away at its options of attack. Thinking about it more, there is a technique in iaido where one half-draws the sword and uses the handle to trap the opponent's sword in the scabbard, pressing down. A buckler could definitely be used in a similar fashion while freeing the user's sword to strike. As useful as the buckler gets, I would advise against "battering away" the opponent's blade though, because the katana (much like the longsword) is very good at recovering from wide angle deflections, especially used two-handed.

There are a lot of videos and competitions where I see people sparring with equal weapons, such as longswords or rapiers, or shinai in kendo, but testing your skills against other styles is what makes someone a well-rounded fighter. You quickly discover the weaknesses that can be exploited in your own fighting when your opponent capitalizes on them, and in the end it forces you to either close off those weaknesses or find a way to turn them into strengths.
