Sword Friend Jon's Custom $3000+ Swords

Ойын-сауық

These a two nice swords from Sword Friend Jon
Sword 1: Is a Chinese made blade that has had a lot of custom work done around it.
Sword 2: Later Rick Barrett W2 Katana (I think). Mounted in a ishime saya.
Both these swords show some very interesting features and how swords might age with a fair amount of use.

Thanks Matt! Just to clarify a little bit. Josiah did all the woodwork on both swords. There is a great variety of ishime or stone finish types in urushi work. I went with a coarser version here because it's a bit different without being wild. The worn in look to the fittings on the Barrett blade was an intentional look, Josiah will be happy to hear that you thought they were antiques :-). The Barrett sword is straight up traditional looking Higo style koshirae. The other, well, whatever it is doing it is doing it now.

Is the green Koiguchi and Kurigata a paint job, or is it some kind of plastic?

Two beautiful, well made blades - Rick's work is always good but his earlier work was definitely my favorite. The ito/tsuka and antique koshirae on both swords are lovely. The eggshell saya, while definitely a labor of love, is in my unsolicited yet humble opinion, far too wild looking to really enjoy aesthetically unless of course you are going for an Easter egg sort of theme. I have worked with urushi many times on projects and it's not fun to work with but it's worth the hassle. I like the urushi/charcoal saya but that shoelace quality sageo kind of cheapens the overall look to my eye. Fun showcase of Jon's swords...thank you as always.

Love the top one (black scabbard), I can't help thinking it would better with a larger tsuba though. Thanks Matt (and John) for sharing these beautiful swords.

3:43 nice touch with the colour-faded iai footage. Really artful. Just enough to look like a thing of the past. Now let's drink a beer and eat spicy tacos.

The polish on the Barrett blade is so clean, so flat. I just love that!

Greetings Shodan! (Hopefully that’s not disrespectful!) Great review as always Matt, but man you got a couple of odd ones there. Impressive still, just a little weird.

Yes!!!! Please. Jon's knowledge was always helpful. He took the time to identify details in my crappy jkoo unokubi. His book is awesome too. Can tell its a labor of love.

The texture finish could be considered an "easier" Urushi finish to achieve (out of a multitude of effects you can achieve with it) as it doesn't require quite the same amount of polishing up, but it''s still a very difficult finish to get. The cure times are long, to say the least, and getting a consistent application of charcoal is fiddly. It definitely adds value, and an indication that the craftsman took their time and a lot of care over making the saya. It's one of several finishes that are designed to replicate natural smoothed stone, and i find it a shame that the more unusual finishes are less widely known (over glossy, uniform mirror finishes), because it's crazy what goes in to achieving the results and they can be really eye catching. Finely crushed leaves and iron filings are other alternatives that give a higher or lower coarseness to the finish (though they can introduce some colour variation, which can be accounted for or embraced depending on the finished look intended). I'm about to start a similar process on a saya i've been working on and i'll be happy if it comes out vaguely as nice as the second sword you were covering.

Good luck with your project. Consider using dried and crushed urushi for the texture, that’s probably the most common way. Can even buy it now, kanshitsu-fun.

Very cool. I like the idea of the eggshell saya as a novelty. Although I'm a little more conservative so I would probably go with a simple black background and brown buffalo horn trims. But the fact that that is all actual egg shells under there is very cool.

Definitely not into crazy colors i like muted none flashy stuff. Muted reds and blues are as far as i go so that saya is a no go for me but the sword itself it beautifull.
