At the center of the Sechseläuten celebrations is the burning of the Böögg. There are definitely parallels here to the customs of Fasnacht and Carnival. In Zurich, the Böögg represents a snowman that is filled with both wood wool and fireworks. Interestingly, the burning time of the Böögg is meticulously documented year after year and is usually between five and around 45 minutes. The burning has taken place on Sechseläutenplatz in downtown Zurich since 1902, every time at 6 p.m. sharp (hence the name). The importance can also be seen in the fact that the Sechseläuten is traditionally attended by many celebrities and there is also a TV broadcast.
Zurich's Böögg was unable to eradicate the problem it suffered last year: Because the wind was too strong on Sechseläutenplatz on Monday evening, the pile of wood could not even be lit.
