The Switzer Falls hike is so much more than just a waterfall. In about 2 miles the trail to Switzer Falls takes you along a babbling brook, through historic ruins, on the side of a spectacular gorge, and then finally, to a pristine waterfall. Although I’ve listed the Switzer Falls hike as moderate because there’s a bit of climbing, overall it’s a very doable hike that offers many rewards for a small effort. It’s also a popular hike so it’s best done very early before the crowds show up.

Great video! Although I haven't hiked this in several years, it is a fun and beautiful hike. Like you said, there can be crowds. I always avoided the weekends and started early. In the past, DFG would plant rainbow trout around the Switzer picnic area. It was a lot of fun for mid week fishing. Thanks for your videos.

Nice, yea, this was actually one of my first hikes in SoCal many years ago. I used to live in NYC and come to LA for work. Once day work got cancelled so I drove out here in the rental car and my mind was blown. Especially coming from the hikes on the East Coast. I've done it numerous times since but never looked in the stream for trout up there, but will take a look next time. Thanks for the tip and see ya out there.

Beautiful hike! However, there was little to no water so the waterfall was pretty dry. As a matter of fact, there were signs on the freeway on our way to the trail announcing a drought in the area :( I went on a late Saturday afternoon in late July and the weather was perfect. Plenty of shaded areas along the way. I enjoyed the sporadic group of hikers as opposed to a crowded trail. This is more of a medium hike and it took me about 2.5hrs round-trip walking at a medium pace (I cut the hike a bit short due to time constraint). Some areas were slippery, I highly recommend great hiking shoes. You will reach high peaks with narrow walkways so be careful. Pack light and make sure to hydrate! Very scenic and I highly recommend. I’m definitely returning and hoping for rain soon 🤞🏽💦

Careful. I fell off a rock that I had to try to go over. There was no turning back because of the rocks. I fell straight into the water fall. I almost drowned.

I'm looking at the pictures on google maps.. I only see one picture of people in the water fall.. Are you allowed to swim in it or not? curious. I like hiking to ponds and or lakes where I can swim in.

Yup you can swim. Toward the end of the season there might not be much water in there, but this May it was a few feet deep and swimmable.

I was looking at maps of this place, I want to camp at Bear Canyon Trail Camp and see the falls, but it looks like there wasn't a direct trail between the two, and it would be very out of the way if I wanted to go to camp first. Do you know if this is accurate and do you have any thoughts about this?

  • @Hikingguy

Yes, continue downstream from the falls in Bear Canyon to reach the camp. Keep going and you'll reach Tom Sloane Saddle. It might be overgrown (haven't do it lately) but should be there somewhere.
