Switch Films: Tutorial + Before/After on Alpacas, Creams & Vint Blacks
Ғылым және технология
Are switch films really worth it? In this video, I show you how and why to apply switch films, and I show a before and after test on three really popular switches: alpacas, creams, and cherry vintage blacks
2:13 Cherry Vintage Blacks
3:01 Alpacas
3:59 Creams
I hope you find this useful-- let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

did you... film three entire sets just for one video?>! My friend you are thorough. love it.
iirc films were made specifically in order to fix vintage blacks

That would make sense considering all the wobble, thanks for watching!
I love how thorough the tests were. This video is concise and is very well done. Looking forward to more videos. Thank you!
Thank you very much for this video. I really appreciate how much you explain why people use films in general, as there are a lot of videos that talk about personal preference using specific springs/switches/films but not /what/ exactly they do in a general sense. Thank you!
damn, this was a good vid, i totally expected it to have more views. i liked how thorough the tests were too. great work
Was finding something to convince myself of applying films on my incoming Gateron Yellows, and this video really enlightened me on the process and clearly showed the difference. Kudos and yes this video deserves more views.
Very informative and easy to digest, keep up the good work mate!
i personally only heard a difference with the alpacas

The vintage blacks had a pretty big difference. There was less rattle and it seemed like the treble also got more pronounced.

I appreciate this test. I could notice the films when full typing, except on the creams.
Props to you for taking the time to place all of the switches and the key caps In the board and film 180 switches
Well, this just saved my creams from getting completely wrecked. Great video!

just found your channel - this vid is great and the reason why I pulled the trigger on the alpacas i last bought
Fast and to the point. You rock!
Great video. I feel like the speed and pacing really respects everyone’s time
Didnt expect that films would do such difference. def gonna do it right away while lubing them. Tyvm
Thank you for posting this, I am building a keyboard and I was wondering weather I should film my switches. This really helped.
I lubed,filmed and change springs (67g) on my silent browns thanks to your videos. Muchhh better !!
Wow, this was an amazing video!
Actually put headphones on because of how carefully and well edited this video is. Thank you for the info.
oh i was going to get some alpacas but didn t think to get films, you helped me a lot, thx
Love the music! Awesome job!
I didn't wanna film my switches unless I saw a convincing difference and this video for sure convinced me to film mine because of my cheaper switches
Solid sound test , i can easily hear the defrent
Damn perfect three switches for me haha maybe black ink adding, but still very thankful for the tested three :). Edit: Now I need more films for my NOS vint. Blacks lol
Great stuff!
great video, short, simple, direct to the point. The only thing missing (in my personal opinion) is a link for the films, but it's just a minor thing.

Thanks for pointing that out! I’ll add the links to description :)
Great video!!
I switch filmed my creams with kebo switch films which are much thinner than tx keyboard films. They work great and have given my creams a new and consistent feel.

A ON I just got some kebo films that I was going to put on gateron yellows, but aliexpress delivered my switches to the wrong adress, so I’ll probably get creams instead.

Very useful video! Thank you.
Nice video. Clear and straight to the point! I like it!
wow. I had no idea somthing so small and unassuming would make such a huge difference!
this video is really well made thanks
Might ride out the Factory lubing for a while, When I first lube I will also grab some Films! Nice vid!
The Alpacas improvement was insane.
Excellent video...
Great comparison! Thank you so much

Your test methodology was very legit, great choices on the 3 switches to compare when to film and when not to film

What keycaps do you use in this video?
thanks for doing before and afters without any comentary and going back and forth between them :) really helps. many videos talk between before and afters and it ruins listening out for detail :/
thank you so much bro
I hope someone invents an easy fix for stem wobble one day too, lol, that would be far more useful considering some switches have way worse stem wobble than they do housing looseness. Weirdly, Both nk and keyfirst creams had much more stem wobble than I was expecting as compared to most tactiles that i've gotten.
Thanks, man! Side by sides are super super useful comparing this stuff. Alpacas sounded much better filmed.
It seems to me, that the films do not remove "rattle", they change the resonance of the switch. Pre-film the resonance is heavily coloured by the board instead of the switch, whereas post-film brings out the characteristics of the switch. The sound becomes less rumbly. With the switch film in place, it improves the accoustic quality of the switch because it creates a better connection between the bottom and top housing. You can notice this by paying specific attention to the upstroke before and after applying film. The upstroke becomes more emphasized after filming.

and what are those keycaps? they look sooo cool
wow! with the alpacas is definitely an improve!
Excellent video! Subscribed. Quick question. How were you recording the keyboard sound tests? It almost sounded like noise cancellation was kicking in and adding some compression. Were you using a USB mic or a normal XLR? It could also be due to distance. To get the best sound profile, pretty much no matter what you're recording, get that mic right up on the source. Don't worry about it being in frame for a sound test. It's totally fine. Great work. Can't wait to see more of your content!

Thanks very much! And this was one of my earlier videos where I was still figuring out how to take sound tests, so the mic position was pretty awful (it was off to the side of the desk) which explains the bad quality, sorry about that haha. Since then I’ve upgraded my entire setup and mic and room to get better sounds. Check out the sound test on the Bauer video (my latest vid)- I was really happy with how that turned out. Thanks for the feedback I appreciate that!! And thank you for subbing! :)
@keybonbon

Ironically I improved the sound test for the keyboard in the Bauer vid but my vocal sound was awfulllll (the mic was about 3 feet away from my face), so I decided for future vids I’m just going to have the mic right near my face haha
thank you sir
Filmed my tangerines, and I can definitely tell the dif
i love that you mentioned even what would happen if you film an already tight switch I watched another video where they said zealios switches aren't recommended for films, can you verify this? How tight are the housings on zealios switches?
@keybonbon
4 жыл бұрын
In my experience all zeal switches respond well to films (even thicker films like TX), and I’ve filmed all my zealios without the problems that the creams had. The housing on zealios aren’t particularly tight like the creams or pandas, so filming should be no problem

awesome! Thank you for the quick reply. Imma have fun filming my switches for the first time then. one more question, do you know where to buy TX films that ship to the US? I don't mind getting from Kebo, but I wonder how comes every site that I find has the TX films sold out
@keybonbon

I usually get mine straight from TX but they release in batches so it’s easy to miss. The best way to keep up is to join us in the MechGroupBuys discord channel where we post whenever a site restocks on something

the alpacas with films are really nice
The switches definitely sound cleaner with the films applied, but during the full on typing its a lot harder to notice. If only they were easy to get your hands on some. They're pretty tough to get in Canada for a reasonable price because of shipping from the US. Otherwise I'd definitely try films on the Gateron Yellows I'm on right now.

Great video! I'd like to try the creams but would like to have a firm spring. Have any suggestions for a good spring weight?
@keybonbon
4 жыл бұрын
Spring weight is very personal so it’ll take some experimentation. My fingers are on the weaker side so I prefer a light spring of 55g, but some people prefer 80g+!
If my switches have already been pre-lubed when I bought them and I add the films will I need to re-lube my switches? Also should I add o-rings to make it even more silent?
Thanks for the video. What keyboard and keycaps are those?
i have alpacas and was thinking of filming them are there different types of films like keycaps and do different materials what films should i get?
Very nice video. But i still wanna ask is gateron yellow ks-3 and gateron ink black v2 really need switch film? I already see some comments on reddit that these two switches dont need filming cause the top housing already pretty tight but im still unsure. Thank you
how does the mx black and alpaca feel? which one is smoother? i personally like the retooled mx black sound more
slightly off topic, but i just picked up some vint blacks and am trying to decide what brand springs to use, between durock, spirit, and tx do you have any prefs? but also tx looks like its the only one readily available though
How about Kaihl switches? Btw, what switch opener works for the kaihls? Thanks for your video.
Not just rsttle on the alpaca did you hwar the entire sound signature change thats why jwk really need films it improves the entire sound alot lol awesome video
Somewhat unrelated question; how'd you get the vintage blacks clean enough for a hotswap pcb? I have some vints coming in but scared of everyone saying not to use desoldered switches on hotswap
@keybonbon
4 жыл бұрын
honestly if it’s a reputable/skilled vendor they should have cleaned the vints for you- that’s been the case for all of the vints I’ve purchased so far. Let me know how it goes!
I am a little late to the party and am new to mechanical keyboards. Am planning a build, and am looking to get some silent alpacas. I was going to buy some switch films and there was a question that boggled me when picking out the films. There were switch films that had .15 mm thickness or .125 mm thickness. I tried searching around for this information - but have not been able to find anything on this. What would be better for silent alpacas? I don't have any frame of reference for something like this. By chance anyone have any information that would help?
Great video! Do you know if i can film glorious pandas?
The creams are making me scream because the pitch of the thocc is slightly higher, i know i'm stupid, but i am sensitive to high pitches and 'sharp' noises so that almost hurt me :[ Nice video btw, been researching what filament for keyboards are, and this did just the trick :] Also, is there any filament for alps switches? Planning on getting a matias keyboard and have been aware of there rattly-ness.
Is it possible to put two Kebo films in one switch to create a thicker film?
Where did you get that cord to connect to your keyboard? Looks dope
Nice video. Were these switches lubed as well?
what is that white board peeking out from under your stand?
Hey KeyBonBon what charger you using for your keyboard I’d love to use it
I have to admit after turning up the volume on my headphones, I could hear a slight difference between the filmed and unfilmed creams on the j key...
I know it's off topic, but what are these beautiful keycaps and where can I get them??? :O
Your desk mat is very pretty! What size it? :0
Hope u still make content
what's that keycap set called? it's so clean
yeah definitely sounds different but is it worth it? nah it takes so much time to film switches i got film but wont do it thanks for the video
where r these keycaps from??
Depends. I tried to film and lube my reds. The total lack of tactility made really hard to type since you don't notice when you press the key. For tactile switches it might be ok.
@AllenJun
3 жыл бұрын
i was thinking of filming my reds but no one has made a video showing the difference. theres a change in feel as well?
What keycaps are you using? Thanks in advance.
Awesome fucking video dude. Thank you!
How could you describe the way that the film changes the switch besides wobble, like more thock, more clack, etc.
pls tell me what are those keycaps
were the alpacas lubed?
Your cable look very good, where did you get it?

definitely heard the difference with the Alpacas and the Vintage Blacks on the single J. But it honestly got lost for me during regular typing.
can you list all switches should be flims and shouldn't
did u clean the switches and relubed ?
what keycap do you have
What is that keycap set? If somebody knows please tell me I would like to maybe get a set

Is there any downsides in using films on switches? I'm planning to use films on my upcoming Gateron ink reds.
@keybonbon
4 жыл бұрын
There are not really any downsides unless you are filming a switch that already had a tight housing (such as creams), in which case you might cause more harm than good as the added stress of the films may cause the top and bottom housings to separate. For the most part filming switches is a big win though!

I want to make my 1st custom keyboard, I haven't picked the kit that I want (I don't want to solder) but I'm thinking of going with creams or alpacas as switches. Is there any kits that anyone can recommend where I don't have to solder?

before realy whating i assume film sound helps consistent
where do u buy films?
What switch film did you use in this video?
What switch films are these?
Do you think with the film it become louder or it is just different?
@keybonbon
4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say louder, but different because the films get rid of “crunchy” noises coming from the switch. You’ll notice a big difference when you add them to silent switches that have wobbly housing since you won’t get those crunchy sounds anymore (I’m thinking of silent alpacas specifically)
Btw. on another note. I previously commented under you space65 post and wanted to hear how it sounds. Any updates yet :p ? Thanks in advance
