I prefer the “fuck around with a weapon until it get boring and spend 9 hours making a set for a new and finding out I hate playing with it so I switch back to the original but it’s too easy(dual blades) so I swap to a third weapon and then it’s better but I want to have cool moments so I switch to a fourth and then I quit the game and start playing mh4u again” approach to picking a weapon for a monster hunter game

Elemental Burst Counter is such a badass move that really enhances the playstyle of the swaxe which is just all in unga bunga offence is the best defence. I just hope that they keep EBC in the future games.

Love the Switch Axe. While I main Insect Glaive in Rise/Sunbreak, Switch Axe is my well-used secondary weapon. And it's my first pick in GU, largely using Alchemy for fun items and the Hunter Arts. It is just so entertaining!

The community poll has given me something to look forward to every day. I also really like the decision to shout it out before the videos. While I was never the biggest fan of the switch axe’s play style in world and GenU (GS and Lance were by babies), I absolutely adored base Rise’s version of this weapon. It felt so amazing being able to string together combos and then blow up in the monster’s face. I may have to go back and give alchemy switch axe another try

I went looking for how Switch Axe was played in Gen U, heard a lotta recommendations for Alchemy Swaxe, and was havin a ton of fun just noodling around and stringing together different abilities and whatnot. Very fun

My first adventures in Monster Hunter saw me to finding kinship with the switch axe as well. Nowadays I main Bow and Lance, but I’ve never forgotten how Switch Axe taught me more of how to hunt in general. It was my guiding hand despite being a tad unwieldy, and doubly so with wirebug combat added on top of me just figuring out how to even play. And I am always down for giving it a play when the mood strikes me.

This is a weapon that’s just been getting better and better, can’t wait to see where it goes in Wilds! Portable games have been kinder to it tho so I’m holding my breath

Swaxe and Chargeblade to me are the bread and butter of "weapons that will service you great if you don't know what you're doing, but will CARRY YOU if you do know what you're doing" As an aside, Switch Axe F or the Swaws as I call it is absolutely insane, having two dashing attacks that drain a sub sword meter instead of stamina when in Axe mode, a longsword style stepping slash, a parry that fills a decent chunk of your sword meter even if you land the parry while in sword mode, a hammer style charge attack, switching to sword mode from a full meter unleashes a strong helm breaker, it's an insane weapon and a completely different beast, if you learn how to incorporate everything it's got at its disposal, it becomes an absurdly fun whirlwind of combos

I did 700+ hunts in just MHW with the switch axe before i even tried a different weapon. 1000+ In rise (Rise was my first game) and no matter what i do, i always go back to my one true (weapon) love. Switch Axe for life!

As a fellow Tri baby, Switch Axe was special to me too, though it didn't click with me in OG Tri but it did in the 3U demo the later in the full game. Ceadeus Switch Axe was GOAT!

Switch Axe was my first weapon too. I didnt last long with it. But I definitely agree that it is an excellent beginner weapon. Better even than the storied SnS imo. Like you said, the combos are very intuitive. But i also think the swaxe can (if youre willing to learn) teach a new hunter about the importance of positioning, openings/punishes, and weapon reach. Now I just main Lance so none of those lessons have meaning to me, but to a new and smart and open minded hunter, its great!

I started with Rise and let me tell you, I loved the heck outta that rise/sunbreak switch axe. After over 200 of gameplay, that combat loop of build gauge, overcharge, zsd, switch skill, repeat just never gets old. Now as I’m playing through world, I ended up missing the Rise switch axe so much I ended up doing my playthrough with Great Sword, my secondary, because the Swaxe was too different (clutch claw doesn’t hit the same for me). I really enjoy the weapons with simple combat loops and little micromanagement, might have to pick up hammer or lance sometime.

Glad we got real ones like you repping the best weapon in the game. I'm also a switch axe early adopter. It's been my main weapon ever since tri. In MHFU I was Longsword and hammer boy, speaking of which, hammer still doesn't seem in a great place, in world it felt the best, but that was tied to the clutch claw gimmick and slopes. I hope they revitalize it's varied options again in WIlds.

I really like the Switch Axe. It's up there with Charge Blade and Great Sword as one of my favorite weapons in the series. It's always felt like a better version of Dual Blades to me, a weapon that dishes out relentless attacks with a super mode that has a limited resource tied to it, but unlike Dual Blades which I find kind of clunky due to its short range, stamina limitations, and quickly draining power gauge that needs that stamina to manually grow itself back, Switch Axe is always passively refilling itself and doesn't instill a sense of "use it or lose it" on you. Sword mode is just better Demon mode. It has innate mind's eye, dishes out element and status damage almost as good, has more reach, doesn't consume your stamina while using it, has better motion values, has a far superior finisher, is more accessible because its gauge is easier to fill, the list goes on. At first I found it awkward to use in my early days of Rise, and I ended up playing Long Sword in that game and Charge Blade in everything else (my beloved, if only you felt better to use in Rise...). But then when I came to 3 Ultimate and was trying to find a weapon to play in the absence of Charge Blade, I initially settled on...Great Sword. Which gave me an appreciation for that weapon in later games (it's my current main in Rise), though it quickly wore out its welcome by the time 3U's HR rolled around. That's when I decided to revisit the Switch Axe. I crafted the Brachydios Swaxe and instantly fell in love. I started to pick up the weapon in later games too, and found a surprisingly mobile, fluid weapon capable of landing haymakers between bobbing and weaving through enemy attacks. It now is probably my third favorite weapon in the series. There is a single problem I have with it though. In World on PC, the weapon has a fatal bug that keeps me from using it. If your frame rate is unlocked, for a good 5-8 seconds after a Zero Sum, you for some reason cannot turn while sprinting. You can still turn while walking, but while sprinting you can only go in a straight line for a few seconds. It's very annoying, and puts me off playing the weapon in that game specifically. In every other game though, it's a common side pick for me, and it's straight up my main in 3 Ultimate.

I’ve always liked that the Switch Axe has a lot of strengths and minimal weaknesses. There’s just other weapons that nail its strengths better, but they typically have the harsher weaknesses. Makes it a very satisfying weapon to run

As a Switch Axe main myself I am heavily biased, that being said, Switch Axe may not be the most damaging or best balanced. But it easily has the most “rule of cool” factor of the entire weapons roster. It smashes, it cuts, it EXPLODES! Bottom line any melee weapon that I reload like a rifle is objectively cool as hell.

In MHW I started with LS and found the counters to hard to pull off. I then tried GS and started killing stuff and kept it going until .... Odagaron! This monster was an impassable wall for several days until out of frustration I tried SA and everything worked for me. I went back to Odagaron and found it easier to defeat him because unknown to me I had an exhaust phial weapon which after some research became my favorite element phial overall. Once I got Elemental Counter in MHRSB it has become my #1 weapon, the GOAT!

In the past week I have been taking an interest in the swax I was using charge blade in rise but I just want to blow things up

As a Tri baby I too fell in love with Switch Axe back then. Bolt Axe was my baby and I briefly got to play some Loc Lac before the online went down. Never got into High Rank back in Tri, and being a young weeb when 3U came out I mained Dual Blades for that entry (shoutout to Nether Blades). I only recently picked SwAxe back up in Sunbreak and the Counter Burst makes the weapon so satisfying to play well. Keeping up constant offense with the Charged mode is super satisfying. Replaying Tri now and getting to play in Loc Lac due to the private server and am super excited to get Sinister Saints once I get late in the game.

Back in 4U, I really could not pick a weapon to main. I ran sns and dual blades, but I was never good and got hard walled by gore magala, who I used insect glaive for. But I still wasn’t content. Once I started playing with the swaxe, I never looked back. Ever since, it’s been my go to. GU, world, rise, I took them all on with the switch axe, and I intend to continue the trend into wilds!

Even having played Frontiers and almost solo maining SWaxe F in G-rank, I still think Rise's SWaxe is the most impressive. Just the amount of options which are all viable, the constant incentive to morph, the utility given to the axe the boost the amp rate. Became my favourite weapon in the series.

My first game was technically freedom 1, but the first time I actually played enough to know what the hell I was doing and was a decent hunter was unite. I didn't really main a weapon at that point. When tri rolled around though, I latched onto the swaxe as soon as I could get it. It just looked too cool. Swaxe has been one of my favorite weapons since it came out. It is a pretty active weapon for feeling so heavy. I haven't really "mained" a weapon in basically any game, but swaxe has been in my top three most used in every game.

While I got into the series due to Freedom Unite, I will say that there is nothing wrong with being a Tri-baby. Despite Long Sword, my usual main weapon until world (which got changed to Charge Blade), It is still a good starting point. And due to Tri introducing Expedition mode, it is one of the easier games to get into and figure out how to play.

I'm really enjoying your series on weapons and after charge blade and hammer I would consider switch axe to be my 3rd/4th main, was the weapon that help me solo most of 3 ultimate

I really loved the Switch Axe in pre-IB World, it was definitely my 2nd most used weapon after my clear main Insect Glaive. Trying it out in MR didn't go quite as well (in fact, the difficulty spike in MR kinda discourages trying any different weapons) and I mostly just used my IG to clear that expansion. I wish there was a way to easily train against any individual monster, 1v1, using any gear, at any rank, in the arena or special arena maps. I maintain that Monster Hunter is one of the single best game candidates for a 'sandbox' mode and Wilds would benefit massively from having one imo. Once I fully clear Iceborne endgame (it's my first real MH and I only started a couple months ago after finishing DD2) I'll probably find a way to get fully comfortable with the weapons I was experimenting with in LR/HR in MR as well..​ Just wish there was a more controlled way to do so.
