Let me play psychic: It will release, reviewers will say they wished it was OLED but will say its a good LCD, will talk about the many reasons you should get one, etc. Two years later, "Nintendo is giving us what we wanted with this OLED version..." Rinse and repeat...

I'd be shocked if they wait the 2 years. No reason to not just offer both with the oled being like 200 dollars more. I think it would be cool if they also made that one a little more powerful to justify it's price but I doubt it.

No, removing joy cons would be just dumb. There are plenty of high selling games and fitness games that utilize this concept well, I'm not even talking about how comfortable you can share them with friends. They should make Joy Cons BETTER, not remove them.

I think it's important to remember that most Switch players are not display enthusiasts, or tech snobs for the matter. Most people will see an 8-inch screen, get hyped, buy the next Switch, and play whatever brightly colored Nintendo game happens to looks decent on an LCD.

honestly, the v1 switch that i have has a screen i'm totally content with. if i want beautiful colors on a rich display i'm going to play at home. playing on the go is more about the fact that i need something to do while i'm waiting for a dentist appointment or something. i don't doubt that the switch oled would be a better thing to look at, but honestly it's such a low priority issue that i don't care. i already don't take the thing around with me much anyway, and i bought a vita because it was much smaller, so the 8 inch screen wouldn't certainly help it in that regard but i'm all for it if it means more power for games.

And the only reason for that prediction is that the device would be bigger to support the rumored 8 inch screen... It makes much more sense that it would come with re-designed Gen 2 joycons that fit the new system, and they would probably sell adapters for the old ones, or at least for them to work wirelessly. I mean, Nintendo could absolutely do away with removeable controllers, but it would be really stupid of them. But the reasoning of "I never used them detached because I have a pro controller" assumes that's how the majority of people play, which there's no evidence for.

I also don't use the Joycons when docked as I prefer the pro controller. However, the vast majority of the Switch user base doesn't use their Switch like that. People buying this as a family type system tend to entirely rely on Joycons. So dumping them isn't very practical for the largest part of their consumer base, especially at the cost of a higher price tag to include a single pro controller, where they'll have to buy at least one more... if not three if they want to play something like Mario Party. Then again, perhaps they make bigger Joycons or they continue use the Joycon, but it just doesn't dock with the unit. If it is bigger, it's going to be interesting to see how they handle this without screwing it up.

i will say that buying 3 sets of joycons is the same price as buying 3 pro controllers. the main difference would be the inability to use the individual joycons per player, for games like mario kart and mario party that only need what a joycon has. if we're being honest though, nobody actually enjoys using them like that... it's only good for small children. maybe if they made them bigger it would be nicer to hold.

The screen size also has game design implications. For a lot of titles, Nintendo was kind of wrestling with having to support big-screen playing but also make sure things weren't too small on the Switch Lite. Fonts and UI needed to be bigger. "Hidden objects" needed to be more obvious, harsher colors, bigger animations and sparkles and glows. It made things a little uglier on a big screen, for the sake of readability. For some games, they did favor the TV experience and the text ended up really small even on the regular Switch. With an 8-inch screen, I hope the differences won't be as drastic, and it'll give them more room to be more subtle with their design sense. Anyway, a generation of kids grew up using iPads. They'll absolutely be ready for an 8-inch handheld. For me personally, I hardly ever used my Switch in handheld mode because I felt the screen was too small for the types of games I played on it, and my hands always cramped up from how uncomfortably small the controllers are in my big-ish hands. So if the controllers are also a little bigger, I'd welcome it though I wouldn't mind if they still skewed smaller as long as we still get a big player base to incentivize devs to give it decent priority.

The discussion around the joy cons felt a bit disconnected from the reality to me... I've seen non gamer friends and family who all have a Switch for their kids, and they all use Joy Cons as their primary or even sole controller. Kids shares joy cons, they have preferences for some colours, etc. I feel It would be a mistake for Nintendo to get away from them. Also, Nintendo is still releasing new Joy Cons every few months (like the upcoming pink one for Peach), which tells me there is a market for it. Also the whole marketing around the Switch and its logo is based on the Joy Cons, would be weird to get away from them for a new console which will probably aim to have a smooth transition.

The removable joy cons are genius. It’s what enables wii and motion controlled games to be played docked. Split joycons are the best way to play with gyro controls, and imo gyro is essential in console fps. And imo the huge variety of control options switch offers is part of why I think it’s a great machine. Other nice things about the joycons are that they enable 2 player at any time with split joycons. Also, playing with them split in both hands is very comfortable.

It's pretty anecdotal to predict the next console won't have removable controllers based on personal use. I've had a Switch since launch and have never owned a pro controller. I'm probably 50/50 between handheld and docked, and I just put the controllers in the grip when it's docked. I also play local multiplayer with my friends regularly; I just bring my Switch and pair my joycons to their console. I know plenty of people who play their Switch exclusively in handheld mode, it's like if they predicted the next console wouldn't be dockable with a TV just because they never used it. It would be foolish of them to toss out that concept. If the screen is 8 inches, the simplest explanation is that the new console will have new joycons, and old ones might be attachable with an adapter. But predicting they'll get rid of removable controllers just because the system with be a bit bigger is a bit of a stretch as of now.

There's 100 million+ of the things out there and those first-year purchases are probably going to be dominated by existing users upgrading. Like the 3DS and the charger. Keeps the BOM down a bit, helps them hit $400 with a decently fast device, also makes the box smaller which counts for a fair bit when you're shipping millions of them. A bigger screen does a good job of conveying "this is a newer, significantly better thing" to existing owners, and we've all got docks and controllers.

Where are you getting 8nm from? The switch used 20nm x1 because it was given at a massive discount but with this new custom chip TSMC 6nm or 4nm both make complete sense here.

Could they remove joycons? if they go for backwards compatibility (as is likely to be the case) tehy can't exclude games which need joycons, like arms, 1 - 2 switch, and many others.

I'd be curious to see if the Switch 2 it will be able to use any sort of local dimming along with more modern LCD backlight technologies like QLED, Mini LED or even Micro LED? I feel with those technologies you can at least still get a pretty good picure on LCD screens, but otherwise going back to an LCD is going to be a very noticeable downgrade from the Switch OLED.

For as bad as joycon were, they’re worth the trade-off from traditional controllers. They’re light years ahead. Removing them would be such a mistake on Nintendo’s part

Interesting thought that I have is that maybe Switch 2 will have 21:9 screen. This will allow Nintendo to use same JoyCons, because the height of the 21:9 8 inch screen is just 0.7 cm more than height of 16:9 7 inch screen. Also this will provide novel portable handheld experiences.

The Switch sucessor will have redesigned joycons. The current Switch joycons won't be compatible with the Switch sucessor 👍🏾

While I would love a 64:27 (which is the actual aspect ratio) screen, it just doesn't make any sense. A Switch also has to work on a TV, and 95% of people who have a TV have one in standard 16:9. Having it be any wider is completely out of the question.

Couldn't they just add an extender for the joy-cons. Think like the motion plus adapter? So it would be something like new joy-cons would be larger but previous ones would work with the adapter or the joy-cons just remain the same with adapters included. I can't see them taking that away because of the loss of single console multiplayer on the go.

I see Joycon staying. The dual motion controllers can allow for interesting control schemes. They will double down on that. I could see them wanting full motion tracking. That way, they can bring back pointer controls.
