THE SAXO, THE BEST INSTRUMENT TO IMITATE HUMAN SINGING?
One of the characteristics of the music of the beginning of the 20th century (swing as a maximum exponent) was that the instruments tried to imitate human singing.
We've previously seen videos with examples of this, and now listening to Arthem Zhulyev's playing the well-known song I Can't Give You Anything but Love, Baby, I realized that every time we talked about this imitation of the human voice, the example has been the saxophone.
While other wind instruments can play with this, the characteristics of the sax certainly make this approach easier. The elements that I think condition it are that it is a simple reed instrument, with a register (sonority and height of the notes it plays) similar to the human and with which many sound effects can be made, both with the mouth and the red and when covering and uncovering the holes.
Listen to this performance, especially Arthem's exposition of the theme with little embellishments and modifications at the beginning of the song, and you'll see how good it sounds. You see I'm a big fan of this saxophonist.
The Swingin' Onions are:
Artem Zhulyev (tenor sax)
Jay Wallis (trumpet/vocals)
Mikha Violin (banjo and vocals)
Joan Motera (double bass)
Olivier Rocque (drums)
