Swingin' A's 1972 World Series Gm. 2 vs. Reds

Спорт

The first era of the A’s in Oakland, known as the “Swingin’ A’s,” won three consecutive World Series championships in the early 1970s, something only one other Major League franchise (the Yankees) has ever been able to equal. The A’s 1972 World Series win was also the Bay Area’s first professional championship.
The 1972 team, known as The Mustache Gang, won 93 games and another division title in 1972. Facial hair aside, this team was about dominant pitching. Five starters posted ERAs better than 3.00. The leader of the pack was Catfish Hunter, who had arguably the best season of his Hall of Fame career, going 21-7 with a 2.04 ERA.
Catcher Gene Tenace belted four homers in the series, including two in the team’s Game 1 victory. The A’s won the World Series in seven games-six of them decided by one run-and Tenace won the MVP Award. Oakland returned home to be celebrated by the entire Bay Area, which had never seen one of its teams win a championship in any major professional sport before the A’s.

There is practically no television footage saved of MLB prior to the 1969 World Series. All you get are those corny old World Series news reel type films. Video tape was too expensive, so they erased all of it to be reused.

@@rockintetster I realize that, but there are plenty of games from the 1970s on that are available and could be remastered. Most games on their DVD collections that were released in the last decade look awful. Even games as late as 2006 were never remastered. Some times you can't even see the ball on base hits to the outfield, because the digital artifacting is so bad. Go watch the end of the 1992 NLCS Game 7...You can't even see the ball bouncing in the outfield on Cabrera's game winning hit.

Actually the entire 1968 series exists in B/W as well as at least 3 games from the 65 series. Back in the 1950's pre video tape all WS game Broadcasts were recorded on film for the armed forces. Quite a few of them survive including games 6 & 7 of the 1952 Series.

I remember s a cynical little 11 year old watching this game saying, "Ahh, that wasn't such a great catch by Rudi. They're just making a big deal about it because they're trying to hypo the series and get more people to watch." See, after the game and in the papers, they were all saying it was one of the greatest catches in World Series history, and I wasn't buying it. But watching it all these years later, it really WAS one of the greatest catches in WS history, considering the circumstances of the game and the way he had to fight the sun. I guess I'm smarter now than the little wise guy I was back then. Even though I wasn't an A's fan, I was rooting for them because I always rooted for the American League teams, and Catfish Hunter was (and still is) one of my all time favorite players.

"Due to time constraints"? What constraints are those? Anyway, you really should let us know ahead of time that you cut out 2 1/2 innings in the middle of the game. Other than that, the video quality is excellent.

The only person I heard picking the A's in this series was my father. I remember us kids before the series talking about how the Reds were going to win easy and he interrupted us and said, "The A's are gonna win. Pitching. Pitching. Pitching. Always go with the team with the better pitching." He was right.

@@RRaquello Thanks for your reply. Her father came to Oakland in 1868 when the population was approx. 3,000! It's amazing you mentioned the 1906 earthquake because she used to me stories of the huge fire and smoke and all the people who came across the bay fleeing from SF. The population of Oakland tripled in the 10 years after the '06 quake. She also told me stories about taking the horse & buggy to Sacramento! She was an amazing person, made the best cookies and pies, and was a diehard A's fan. She never left the side of the radio while the game was on. She lived to see all three of their World Series victories. She died on the eve of Thanksgiving 1976.

The '72 Reds were the first team in major league history to advance to the World Series without the best record in its respective league, By virtually every stat and metric, the Pirates were slightly better than the Reds in the regular season. The Reds didn't earn the home field advantage in the playoffs. A cockamamie playoff system gifted it to them much like the Giants one year earlier and the Mets one year later. #DoYourHomework
