Swing music is a style of jazz that developed in the United States during the late 1920s and early '30s. It became nationally popular from the mid-1930s. The name derived from its emphasis on the off-beat, or nominally weaker beat. Swing bands usually featured soloists who would improvise on the melody over the arrangement. The danceable swing style of big bands and bandleaders such as Benny Goodman was the dominant form of American popular music from 1930 to 1945, known as the swing era, when people were dancing the Lindy Hop. The verb "to swing" is also used as a term of praise for playing that has a strong groove or drive. Musicians of the swing era include Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Harry James, Lionel Hampton, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Jimmie Lunceford, and Django Reinhardt.
Swing has its roots in 1920s dance music ensembles, which began using new styles of written arrangements, incorporating rhythmic innovations pioneered by Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter and other jazzmen. During the World War II era Swing began to decline in popularity, and after war, bebop and jump blues gained popularity.
Swing blended with other genres to create new musical styles. In country music, artists such as Jimmie Rodgers, Moon Mullican, Milton Brown and Bob Wills introduced elements of swing along with blues to create a genre called "western swing".

To everyone who's reading this, I pray that whatever is hurting you or whatever you are constantly stressing about gets better. May the dark thoughts, the overthinking, and the doubt exit your mind. May clarity replace confusion. May peace and calmness fill your life. 🙏

You know...I'm 45 years old! I used to be a very respectable 1st chair Jazz trombone player and soloist since middle school till high school.Even at that age in my teens learning jazz was what improved my skills to understand my instrument at a higher level. This genre involving from the rhythm section to the horns was such an excitement! It's a complex art learning the swinging and attitude involved. I'm sure many you that understand this style music is such an amazing expression in music. This music never feels outdated!

Way, way back, I decided to educate myself on the roots of the rock artists I loved. That ended up being almost everything from around the world, and certainly big band. One day, I was listening to some hot '30s b.b. jazz and I realized that those guys were really rockin' out! It wasn't R n' R, but with amplification...? I know, not really rock, but the intensity of their energy was exactly the same. They were cool! Still love it. So glad this collection popped up as a recommendation.

Good to see you here appreciating this wonderful music. I was 21 when I saw Duke Ellington. I think my BF and I were the only 20-somethings in the entire theater. Also saw Count Basie, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton in my 20's, Stephane Grappelli in my 30's. Grew up listening to Big Band - Cab Calloway, Glenn Miller, et al. (With hard rock, new age, grunge, jazz, classical music - life filled with music.)
