Swindon: A Portrait of Youth

Swindon: A Portrait of Youth 2018

Robin Mason’s snapshot of multiple perspectives on growing up in the UK was created from telephone interviews conducted in 2017 with teenagers in Swindon, a town in Southwest England that has often served as a political bellwether for the country.

Lived in Penhill for many years, left 15 years ago. Swindon was a sad angry place for me.

A great shame. Never fulfilled its potential as a town. The location is great yet it continues to struggle with no sign of recovery.

I would say it’s smallish , it’s one of the largest towns in the uk. It’s really not that bad.

People mainly talk about ex-mining towns when they refer to urban decay, but Swindon is an example of a town always on the cusp of being an industrial powerhouse. The moment the railway works left Swindon was the day the future for the town died. Today, the only opportunities in Swindon are becoming a desk jockey for Nationwide or Zurich. For the past 20 years, it's been on life support being a commuter hub for Bath, Bristol and Reading. Coronavirus has put 6 iron nails in that coffin. Not once in my 18 years in Swindon did I ever envisage myself staying there, the dream of every Swindonite is to move to Bristol, Reading or London. It's also an excellent example of how mismanaged local and national politics actually is. Take the gaudy new Regent's Circus shopping centre. Ugly, abandoned and the complete opposite of what Swindon actually needed, they practically had to pay Morrisons to occupy it (with cut price taxes). Where are the heavy industries? Where are the tech jobs? Where are the careers? Where is anything? The only way out of this shit state is a two pronged attack from the national government protecting industries in this country and killing off outsourcing, with local government selling Swindon to industries, and listening to business owners, entrepreneurs and customers about what is actually needed in Swindon to restore it's footing amongst the other towns in Britain. Things like vocational education for MODERN industries, business parks that can be used for niche purposes with specialist services, high capacity transport and shipping links, etc.

Lived in Swindon too many years. It drains the soul out of people. It has nothing of interest other than a damn roundabout.

Swindon's terrible reputation was somewhat unfair up until around 2015-2016. It was quite a decent place, good nightlife, lots of shops, quite clean...... Now it really and truly is a grim place. Went back to the town centre after many years recently and its like a post-apocalyptic urban hellhole. empty lots, charity shops and fake Turkish barbers. Its a shame really. Just seems to be full of recent arrivals now and they dont give a shit about maintaining their space.

That’s really sad to hear. I’m American, but my dad was from Swindon and as a kid in the 90s we’d visit every summer to see my grandmother. The town’s bad reputation was a bit of a joke in my family, but one we never took very seriously. I remember getting freshly-made donuts at one particular stand in the Town Centre, and afterwards always begging my dad to take me to the big bookstore and the two-story McDonald’s (which seemed gargantuan to me then). I told friends at home horror stories about the Magic Roundabout, with due exaggeration. I got my first “grown up” watch at a jeweler there, and my first camera from Boots. I remember visiting a museum called something like STEAM! and searching for my grandfather’s name among a huge list of train workers that covered an entire wall. We still have a picture somewhere of my brother attempting to ride on the stuffed alligator in the town museum. Lots of great memories as I loved my grandmother dearly, and an indelible part of my childhood. Both Dad and Grandma are gone now, and in a fit of nostalgia I searched for Swindon in KZread - this is what I found. Really very depressing.

You just gotta find the nice parts and they’re are plenty. And yes I’m a swindonian and I’ve been addicted to crack and heroin lol so I’ve seen the good and bad of this town

Not one comment on how the town has been flooded with immigrants to the point that the town now has lost any English culture it may have once had, We were never asked and now we are being replaced.

I live in North Swindon. I hardly ever go to town centre. That whole area around town centre has no English people living there. I feel like North Swindon is a different town to Swindon. I like North Swindon. We have our own shops here, we don't need to go to town centre. Town centre is like a foreign country.

It's so bad now, people just zonked out or having massive argies in their houses to the backdrop of domestic abuse and the pungent smell of weed.

PORTRAIT OF YOUTH (C)2006 A PAINTING OF YOUTH A SILLUETTE IN TIME. PERSEVERED THE NATURE OF A FACE SO SOFT AND KIND. A PORTRAIT OF FEELINGS A FERTILE SPRING OF RHYME. WHEN SHE'S NEAR ME. SUCH A STRANGE SENSATION. MY MIND KEEPS DRIFTING, SAILING BACK THROUGH TIME, FLOWING GENTLY, PEACEFULLY, AND FINE. BACK TO THE DAYS WHEN SHE WAS MINE . SHE WAS MINE. SHE WAS MINE. TWO SPIRITS REACHING OUT AS ILLUSION FILLS THE STAGE. MYSTIC PREMONITIONS REVEAL A FORGOTTEN AGE. LIFE WAS LONELY BEFORE I KNEW HER. MANY NIGHTS I WAS ALONE. MANY NIGHTS I WAS ALONE. A PAINTING OF YOUTH A SILLUETTE IN TIME. PERSEVERED THE NATURE OF A FACE SO SOFT AND FINE. A PORTRAIT OF FEELINGS A FERTILE SPRING OF RHYME. These are the words of an original song.
