Hands down my favorite fish! I had a cichlid tank for about 10 years. It broke my heart, but I gave the tank to a family member who was having some depression. But I knew he was a fish fanatic, and I hoped it would cheer him up. What can I say, family over fish. It's been years, but I'm saving up for another beautiful cichlid tank. They are amazing, intelligent little guys!

First of all, your pond is amazing! It's my dream to have such a beautiful pond of african cichlids! At 15:21, the blue fishes with yellow fins are Pseudotropheus Acei from Lake Malawi. It's so cool that you added some branches of wood because Pseudotropheus Acei are frequently found in sandy areas near fallen branches of wood and tree trunks in the wild. They graze algae on the wood. At 10:02 these are "Maingano" (not maingamo), now their scientific name is Melanochromis Cyaneorhabdos. And you're right, these fishes are called "Mbunas", which means "rockfish".

Please consider adding Victorian chiclids to your pond kenan! They come from the 3rd lesser known rift lake. They are zo beautiful and under appreciated! Also look into synodontis lucipinnis or Petracola, both are small species of catfish native to tanganyika. I work at a fish store down here in Portland Oregon that's famous for having one of the biggest supplies and varieties of African cichlids in the country. I'd love to see more rift species represented in your pond!

Great video! As a cichlid guy myself, I love seeing people take interest in their behavior. Amazing parents and amazing life cycles throughout the family. I would suggest one KINDA big thing though. To truly experience the behavior of the small cichlids of the rift lakes, you need a predator. 2 or 3 emperor cichlids (preferably of the same sex) would keep populations in check and bring out the natural rock dwelling behavior of the smaller species.

It's native to Africa, tough enough that cichlids don't eat it, it can grow into massive clusters with roots that act like mangroves (fry nurseries), it can attach to rocks or logs, and it can grow up through the surface.
