If you include hares in that question, yes they're everywhere. Antarctica is the only continent where there are no lagomorphi (family of hares, rabbits and pikas), and in Austronesia they are non-indigenous but unfortunately humans have brought them there to misbalance the biotopes.

As a teenager in Montgomery,Alabama, I witnessed something amazing! I saw one of these rabbits (the locals called swamp buck rabbits) that some beagle hounds were chasing run by me at about 20 feet away and dive headfirst into a swamp lake and disappear under water much like a beaver. It never reappeared and I assumed that it swam over into some nearby weeds to resurface and must've barely stuck its nose above the water to breath and stay hidden! I never heard of anyone else mention seeing this but myself. They can definitely swim underwater!

So cute! Our last rabbit - Tux - a Netherland Dwarf, would swim around when we'd take her to the beaches around the Puget Sound. It was at first such a surprise that rabbits swim...or as you said - bunny paddle. :)

I wonder what the first swimming rabbit thought. Rabbits: ah crap, a lake, I guess we better go around... First swimming rabbit: well hold on, why can't we just kinda' paddle through it? Rabbits: LOL Jack you're hilarious. Stop fooling around and hop like you're supposed to.

1 inch of warm water (not too hot or too cold) for poopy bum or other things that they cannot groom out. Remember to hold them and wrap them in a towel to dry. Careful observation and care is needed after a bunny bath.

I was deer hunting in GA. Two foxes came trotting out of the woods looking for something. They scared up a rabbit and it ran straight into the creek below my tree stand and swam downstream. The foxes got to the edge of the water and sniffed around a few seconds then left. One of the coolest things I saw while hunting. Smart rabbit.

Both Swamp rabbits and Jackrabbit are lagomorphs. However, jackrabbits are actually hares and not rabbits. Swamp rabbits are part of the cottontail genus, Sylvilagus. Jackrabbits are part of the hare genus, Lepus.

Would be interesting to see how these rabbits continue to evolve. They may have continued to grow, to become deer sized perhaps. Or they could have adapted more and more to swimming and finding food in the water. Very interesting.
