Caeleb Dressel won the first individual Olympic gold of his career in the men’s 100m freestyle at Tokyo 2020. The American swimmer held off the defending Olympic champion, Australia’s , to win by 0.06 seconds. Kliment Kolesenikov, representing ROC claimed the bronze medal.

    If you see the last 20 meters of the race, Dressel did not even come up for air and he just kept swimming underwater til the end. Amazing!!

    @@nadav2495 no it didn’t. Breathing wastes time, so keeping your head down near the end is optimal. You obviously don’t swim

    @@vliegvis5846 in 100 meters after he gave it all at the 75 meters he has no energy so he needs to breath to get some oxygen as you can see in the video the other swimmer was faster than him the last 25 meters dressel had a big gap from that others so they didn't manage to overtake him but they got really close to him then they were at the 75 meters. In 50 meters it's good not to breathe but in 100 you should breathe a lot

    @@nadav2495 breathing in the last few metres wouldn’t have given him more energy. It would’ve taken more time. They started catching him because he went out faster. Believe me, these swimmers are experts at what they do. If it was faster to breathe more, they would do so.

    @@XwD77 Popovici was struggling forward and got 7th at final in the 100m race . how can you expect him to win the 200m free race as even if he started at the lane 4th . he is out of stamina .

    Dressel was celebrated for not breathing his last 15m but once he stopped breathing his stroke shortened up quite a bit. Chalmers, by contrast, took five breaths in the final 15m and gained on Dressel the whole way.

    @@snowpants2212 No, I think he sacrificed some efficiency to be slightly faster at the end. It depends on who the swimmer is but I think it did help Dressel get the win. Chalmers was always going to gain in the last 50m regardless of what Caeleb did.

    Dressel's awesome, but he too will not repeat this event in 3 years. There's one name to keep in mind: Popovici. Popovici (still 16 years old in this race!) will be a repeat winner in 2024 and 2028.
