swim review: AFTERSHOKZ XTRAINERZ bone conduction headphones

I was approached by AfterShokz to review their waterproof bone conduction Xtrainerz MP3 headphone whilst swimmming: AfterShokz Xtrainerz bit.ly/3ftR4kd I had never used bone conduction headphones, nor swum whilst listening to music so it was a swim into the unknown. I tested how they felt, the sound quality, how to wear with a swim cap, and what it was like listening to music during a long swim.
The headphones are waterproof to IP68, they have an open-ear design and have 4GB memory. The ones I tested were sapphire blue.
I downloaded mp3 music tracks from www.jamendo.com/start which were free for personal use.
Filmed on a GoPro Hero 7, and a GoPro Hero 9 using Xclear hydrophobic pro repel lens protectors: getxclear.com/collections/hyd... I used a chesty mount to attach the GoPro to my tow float and put a full waterbottle in the downward side of my towfloat to stabilise it. Edited in Lumafusion app on iPad Pro

    Hi Maira, I haven't tried any other earphones. The thing about bluetooth is it looses connectivity in water, so I wouldn't be surprised that this dedicated swim headset doesn't have it. Good luck finding one that suits your needs, and thansk for watching!

  • @Lindabeth2010
    @Lindabeth20102 жыл бұрын

    I just tried them in a pool - first time I've used them I thought it was a bit fussy trying to get the hat, goggles and device sitting properly. When I put the swim cap over the back which juts out, it pushed the transmitters too far forward so it probably wasn't right over the cheek bone, making the sound quieter than it should have been. Also, without the ear plugs, all I heard was my breathing and bubbles...it was hard to hear the music/podcasts I'd uploaded. The most unsatisfactory bit was that as I turn my head to breathe, one side of my head being out of the water made a big difference to the sound. I had it on Swim Mode which sounded very different when one side of the device was lifted out of the water. I'm sure I'll work it through hopefully so it functions more satisfactorily as i try it a few more times. But I would be interested to know if you experienced a similar disparity in the sound as you inhaled with one ear under and one ear above the water. As to the cap over the back of the device pushing the transmitters forward, it didn't look like that happened to you. Wonder if I'm dong something wrong or different. I think I'll practice at home looking in the mirror to see what's happening. My cap may be tighter than yours. I'd really be interested if you could give me your comments on these issues and how, if you did, you solved them. Thanks, Linda

    Hi Linda, thanks for reaching out. I always swim with earplugs and I did find my breathing noisy when I first started with the plugs a few years ago. I didn't notice a change to the sound. I did find that music was easier to listen to than podcasts though because any disparity in sound was easier to deal with. I was using it in a pool when I tried listening to the podcast and I found that turning at each end disturbed my concentration. I also found that I had the sound up really loud, so after the first pool swim I ended it up with a headache. I didn't find it too difficult to position the bar when I did swim with a cap, it did take a bit of fiddling, but I managed to keep it on the cheekbones. In the pool I don't wear a swim cap so i didn't have to fiddle about with the positioning of the back bar. I hope this helps.

    I asked these for Xmas, partly as you liked them so much. However, didn’t think they worked so well for speech audio perhaps. I estimate I could maybe hear 50-60% of output properly clearly when swimming. It varied with my head moving (and was actually quite a good prompt to keep my head down). This quality would likely be fine if listening to music, following a beat, baseline etc. Trying to follow along with spoken word though ended up just being frustrating. Pity, as these are an interesting technology and a lovely looking design. However, I just don’t think the sound quality is good enough in water.
