There is a warning to be added here. Detaching and reattaching the cleaning solution will only work for a short while until the motor gets rusted and freezes. Each time you reattach the cleaning bottle, small needles poke through the rubber cover so that the solution can be pumped to the floor. However the second time you refill your container, new holes are punched. As a result, the motor will eventually freeze due to the solution running down into the mechanism. I've ruined two Swifters this way. A better solution would be to never remove the cleaning solution container and cut a hole in the top to refill it and tape it shut so it won't splash out. However you will always have to keep your mop upright forever and ever.

I crochet mine too. I designed my own, and used a deep rib stitch and a double yarn combo of cotton and acrylic yarns for each pad. The cotton yarn is there for saturation and absorption and the acrylic is there for better scrubbing abilities. I used coordinating colors just for fun but it doesn’t really matter…no one sees them but me. But, being anal about colors, I was lucky and found both types of yarn in a variegated purple and turquoise color way that looks really cool on the mop head, lol! I made a set of three and rotate them in the laundry so that I always have a clean one ready. Crocheted them years ago and they’re still going.

I work in the cleaning business and altough these ideas are FANTASTIC on HOW TO ' Not fall into the OVER/Consumming Trick, instead of buying the 'Swiffer WET JET', do has I do; Just buy the Microfiber Stick/Pad, (and a few EXTRA pads when the 1st one is being washed) and I keep a spray bottle to your belt/pocket, spray the flloor and just sweep normally !!! Another way/trick to save money !!!

I hate pine sol. The lady that babysat me when I was young (a long time ago) she had a cat that peed all over the place and she used pine sol to clean it. Anytime I smell pine sol it's like I smell that nasty cat pee smell too. That cat ruined pine sol for me dang it.

When we use the swiffer for a quick clean of our tiles floors, we just use a microfiber cloth! Ours are large enough to "hook" into the little indentations on the swiller mop! No need to buy anything new! We then give them a quick rinse in the sink and throw them into the washing machine!

This has saved me from having to buy a bona mop and takes you use the reusable cloth pad. My hand scraped wood floors have build up from using the swiffer products and were told by everyone to switch to bona hardwood floor cleaner. We’re also potty training a puppy and are mopping multiple times a day (unfortunately). So washing pads over and over would have been a real pain! Plus who wants to buy a second mop that already sprays cleaner?... so being able to open the swiffer bottle to put bona cleaner in it and use the mop I already have AND use the disposable pads because of the puppy accidents is WONDERFUL!!!!

I think they make a lemon pinesol now too and it's a bit lighter in scent for those who might find the original pinesol a bit strong. Another hint that may not safe a lot of money but may be worth it is to use distilled water or demineralized water at about 80 cents to a dollar twenty per gallon. I've learned over the years when a product needing dilution requests or suggests you use distilled water to choose that option if you can. It once took me 9 days to strip a vinyl floor of old wax so I could switch to poly acrylic style shine products but wax has to go because it will cloud otherwise. I ignored the use distilled water option in the commercial concentrated stripper. Until about day 7 I was so tired of going over and over and much on my hand and knees and making a mess and not getting all the streaks out. I added distilled water and omgosh that was the trick. Two days later I had a stripped clean beautiful floor in both utilty and kitchen and two bloody knees that ended up scarring and have never fully recovered in 8 years since. So when a concentrated window cleaner said Distilled water works best I experiemented and sure enough distilled water did not streak while our extra Hard Well Water does. Also no worries bout chlorine if you are on city water too. I've been using pinesol for over 50 years including in my profession and was once challenged by another pathologist who insisted he would prove my lab was full of contaminated molds and bacteria. He was so upset his lab was and MINE was NOT to his amazement. To be fair his lab actually grew on purpose several types of molds for industrial field work and control in plant work while my lab in same company was about growing seeds for various testing and we didn't want to control what the plant material might bring into the lab so we cleaned everything with Pinesol and Lysol combinations thereof and no doubt in my mind these are what made his results of testing with agar plates in both labs with the superior idea he would prove how bad my lab was compared to HIS backfired. Ahh the male competitiveness sometimes us gals need to remind ourselves to remain humble as not to upset the fragile balance between the genders. Anyway Great demonstration of thinking outside the box with the Hack for removing the caps on the Swiffer Jet bottles. And another cool thing is you can now use any product that you favor from vinegar water or premade dilutions of your favorite cleaner to concentrated professional fomulas with your own dilutions. Merry Maids or something like that cleaned my lab years ago and used a cinnamon scented additive to the mop solution I've learned to make my own and now also use lemon and perppermint too. Of course cinnamon and peppermint might get lost in a pinesol or strong scented product but it's lovely in many options out there including vinegar. Or just the plain rinse water if you need to rinse. (Think essential oils and a drop or two will do it and not usually effect the floor or the cleaning products. These scents don't linger long but love it for the first day or two.)

Thanks for the hack. Just ordered a set for my wet jet. I like how you showed how to open the cleaning solution bottle. I love pine sol also as I have all wood floors in a 2100 sq. foot home. I retired a few months ago and have become the house husband. Yes I cook and clean. Thanks Jen.

Jim, get a fake Sham Wow from the Dollar store and they work better than microfiber. And you can cut 3 from one cloth. This video is a commercial for those overpriced microfiber cloths that is sponsoring her. The Sham Wow's work better for about one - fifteenth the price. And a pair of pliers, used fairly gently, will pop that top in 2 seconds.
