Sweet - Blockbuster - TOTP 25.12.1973 Alternate Take (OFFICIAL)

Музыка

“Blockbuster” was written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman and released in January 1973. It shot to no. 1 in the UK and spent five weeks at the top of the charts. This particular version filmed on TOTP in 1973 had to be re-recorded because a number of things went wrong during the performance. Andy explains the story behind the making of this clip and explains why the TOTP director chose to do a “take 2”. He also highlights just how much effort went into creating each episode of TOTP and how things have changed since then.

@@micheleangelique423 he got on my nerves always messing about and pulling stupid strokes, we knew you were miming, guys, you didn't to show out! Seems to me looking back only Brian and Mick respected the fans, and took it seriously. Was there ever a drummer to match Mick, in showmanship and flamboyance, and a frontman like Brian, he had it all, looks, voice, charisma. Without those two, the founding members, there was no Sweet.

Love it!! Just sat here grinning my face of at this. Steve always stole the show and made me laugh. They always looked like they were having a bloody good time, and by all accounts they were!! The B side of Blockbuster, Need A Lot Of Lovin', was what really made me take notice. Loved 'Buster but played Lovin' to death. As a consequence I became a huge fan and went on to track down the previous singles as it occurred to me that the B sides were better (in most cases) than the A side. Man From Mecca on the back of Little Willy was as heavy as anything you could get in 1972. Bloody amazing band who finally get the kudos they deserve

I've no idea why Ive turned up here now, but I guess I never really had anything to say. But I've been listening to Sweet today along with the wife and having a bit reminiscing. After which I guess I just needed to come and say a huge thank you after my wife asked me what got you into heavy metal? I told her this was the first record I ever REALLY paid attention to as a kid. I just loved it so much. My older sisters played music all the time but as a nine or ten year old I just heard their crap and that was it I'd leave and go ride my bike. Music never really stuck with me. Thinking back upon my wife's question, the stuff I liked was the real loud "in your face" stuff, I've no idea why I just loved jumping around going nuts to it. Sweet, Suzi Quattro, Slade, anything that was just screaming loud and different I kinda hooked into. But it was Sweet that really got me buying records as a ten year old. I'm 56 years old now, and I've been a metalhead for the last 46 years (utter lifetime AC/DC fanatic). I still love going to gigs more than anything else ever. I still play my vinyl on my Pioneer separates stack system. It's true what they say, once a metalhead always a metalhead. I still hold today decades later, that teenage rampage and action are priceless and timeless belters amongst many more I could mention. I play them still and I still and I still jump around like a ten year old lunatic albeit with maybe a bit more restraint these days, but when you really feel something it's impossible not too really. So I guess I'm really just here to say a massive MASSIVE thank you to the Sweet... past, present and future, for hooking me into rock (hell yes, I don't care what debates are out there, make no mistake these boys are hard rock not pop), thank you for making me pay attention, go nuts, jump around, buy your records and lead me down the long long path into the heavy metal music and people I call family today, some 46 years later. You are inimitable!! There is nobody like you, and there never will be. So I thank you The Sweet, from the bottom of my heart, for the lifetime of happiness you and your extraordinary music has afforded me unto this day, and until the day I take my last breath. Long may you live!! And my sincere condolences to the remaining families of the fallen, yet never forgotten. I believe it was Suzi Quattro who once said "There will always be that one kid out there who doesn't want mainstream music and just wants to rock their brains out instead" That kid was me. The band was you. And there's still a helluva lot more kids out there. Keep rockin!!

Helen the raver I think that I remember reading at the time that these were specially designed stands made for the specific purpose of breaking with ease . Good observation concerning the condition of the stand at 3.42. Brian " the best frontman to grace the TOTPs stage" Connolly seems to find the situation amusing here (LOL)!

It was fun to get the lowdown on this shoot. Personally , I like when bands get things like that under the radar . This is the same version that was on the "Glam Rock" video , and , apart from "The Third Leg' , there's the bit with Steve's "mustache", which is painted on , disappearing before the end. Not being English , I did'nt grow up with "Top of The Pops" , but , of the clips I had seen , I could tell the bands were lip - synching , but , that was still par for the course. I It was a great time to be a visual act , and color TV was becoming more the norm , so , shows like TOTP were a great vehicle for Sweet's act. merry christmas , everybody !!!!!!!!!

+Jan Meyers FYI,Andy tried to make contact with Steve!!;Andy contacted Steve to play together at the 50th anniversary Open Air Show on 9/6-2018 in Berlin, but Steve didn`t even respond!! German Good Times magazine (June/July 2018) has (separate) interviews with Andy & Steve in which Steve claims Andy is nòt an original member as he joined Sweet in 1970,not 1968 when the band was formed... Steve also claims he is the last surviving member from the original band!! Bit of a weird statement from Steve as the Sweet`s succes started when Andy joined!! Andy even provided Sweet with a great ballad on the flip of `Funny,Funny`. As a matter of fact Andy was/is the real creative mind behind Sweet`s worlwide succes, most ideas for songs, etc. came from Andy. Songs Steve plays to this very day with his SweetBand. It`s Steve that blew the chance..... Goed te horen dat er nog Nederlandse (Belgische?? ) Sweet fans zijn!! Jan,STAY SWEET!!

the complete 1973 christmas totp was shown on christmas eve shame they had to cut out blockbuster when they could have edited out Jimmy Osmond singing "long haired lover from liverpool" ! i still have a copy of this episode from when it was shown on bbc2 1n 1991 originaly on vhs but i transferred to dvd so the quality is a bit ropey which i why i was glad it was shown again understandably Gary Glitter singing "leader of the gang" and other references to him had been removed , other changes were tony blackburn's link before "eye level" and noel edmonds' link after it being shown in full when they were reduced on the '91 showing, the full version of "eye level" was shown this time after the beginning was cut off in '91 also slade's "merry xmas everybody" was shown in full after being cut short Apparantly Roy Wood gave Noddy the custard pie he had in his face at the end of the song, for some reason on both showings the second verse of wizzard's "see my baby jive" were cut out (timing?) as were two lines of "rubber bullets" by 10cc the lines were "we've all got balls and brains, some have balls and chains (language perhaps?) .

The crowd are a bunch of store mannequins. Getting sweet to record a clip in a fitzroyhotel in melbourne and they would have seen real crowd. No.phone to record it on a big plus. Sweet were one of the best and still love their music

Not having ever been interested enough in music to know anything about any instrument... what is a bass and how is a guiter different from a bass... when are you actually playing and when are you pretending to play... And when is the microphone on and when is it off? I never saw these "little things" that Andy spoke of at the start of this video. I just know that if there are any payments that follow my watching the video it will go to the Official Sweet Channel as it should.
