I’m Swedish and I’ve gone to 5 different schools in different parts of the country and it definitely varies a bit from school to school. In general I’d say that the food is really good though, at least when it comes to nutrition. I think the main reason a lot of Swedish kids complain is because the schools usually don’t stick to just hamburgers/pancakes and stuff that most kids like. Instead they actively try to get the kids to try new things, which parents way too often give up on... Now that I’m at uni I really miss those school lunches, they used to be the highlight of my day. Not just the food, but the whole experience of sitting down and eating with your friends!

@@57Vlada Not sure how you imagine the government and parents working together. The government takes care of the school lunches in Sweden but the parents are still responsible for all the other meals. Which ends up being the large majority of meals the kids get. So I would consider that as the parents being plenty involved. Kids(their parents) can freely choose where they go to school. Having parents meddling in how the schools do their day to day business is generally detrimental. There are a lot of smart and knowledgeable parents. But there are more ignorant parents. Constantly sorting through all that feedback costs too much time and money.

I agree and I am thinking the same thing @Olivia. I am a bit ashamed of how spoiled I now understand that we were, compared to other countries. So sorry dear "bambas" (slang for school kitchen workers in Sweden) for just wanting pancakes instead of your wonderful food. I am really happy today that you gave me the oppertunity to try all those vegetables and different dishes. You were right all along that you do start to like a lot of things if you try it out and I am very grateful that you kept us healthy and did not give us pancakes every day haha.

No, I don't think that's the case. Most kids I've come in contact with -- and certainly my own -- have been quite keen to try new things. It's just that so much of the "new" things are really disgusting. Though it's not new, and no one has ever liked it, schools still serve salmon with cinnamon. It's foul and a waste of good fish. Schools often totally bungle pea soup, which is perhaps one of the very few foods that actually turn out really well if made industrially. But I take the point: If this looks good from the outside, the situation in some other places must be pretty horrendous (as it was in my US high school in the 1980s).

It feels like in USA the government trusts the parent to give their kids the right food for school, and in Sweden the parents trusts that the government will do it. Honestly I think it's better for the kids to have experts set the guidelines than the parents.

I come from a small town that had around 1k people living there at that time. We had freshly cooked meals everyday and i am so grateful for that. Also during cooking-classes, once a week, we ate what we made so nobody wanted to make a bad dish during those lessons. Easy to say that im eating way worse now 🙄

Truly grateful for being swedish having been served the swedish school lunches through out all my years in school. Offcourse I've not always liked every single meal but I have always eaten whats being served and also always been thankful and showing it at least by saying a simple "thank you" to the kitchen personel when dropping of my empty plate. Also, that they've now actually started to also serve breakfast is fantastic! Hope you can bring some on these ideas over to the US where the school lunches from what I've seen is complete bullsh*t. Good habits most likely start in early ages and solving these schoo lunch related problems in the US could in my opinion be very beneficial.

And I went to restaurant school in high school to become a chef so I think I know the difference between good food and bad food. Children often complain that it is poor food just because they do not like a special dish. But it is not bad food just because you do not like a certain taste 🤷‍♀️

Brings back memories of school, everyone’s favourite meal was almond or breaded fish, with sour cream and dill sauce, (fisk panettter med filsås och potatis). And pork loin and deer casserole, (renskavs gryta, fläskfilé och pepparrotssås) we had the best salad bar and also milk on tap.

It depends on the municipality. They have different set ups and focus when it comes to food

Tap water, streams, rivers, lakes, it’s all potable.

Before cooking the rice, leave the rice in about 20 in water, then rinse out the rice before cooking the rice. When the rice is ready, let it rest under a lid with paper towels in between for 5 minutes.

Thanks for this video... reminds me of my time in school in a suburb in Stockholm, we always had good food (only thing i didnt like was fish balls) but what was good was that if u didn’t like the hot food there was always the sallad buffet, or crisp-bread or cereals with milk or yoghurt,... im now a preschool teacher and our chefs cooks food from all around the world (when a country has a national day we get a dish from that country) which makes us teachers and kids open to try new dishes and flavours.. also sugarfree like in the video :) and of course kids and teachers with special diet get as good food.. i have milk free vegetarian food 😍

As a person who worked in several swedish school cafeterias I must say that many children don't like this food. I can't say that "Sweden cares about it's children". Well, yeah, maybe if we only think about what's healthy. But the thing is: just because there's healthy food doesn't mean that children eat healthy. Some of them just skip lunches and - as I heard - it is forbidden to have your own sandwich in school, so they are just hungry or go to McDonald's. The portions are often really small, so it happens that there's not enough food for everyone (sic!). And yeah, the food isn't usually prepared at school. The sallad that children didn't eat can be served the next day. School lunches in Poland are very healthy and schools there have their own cooks who prepaire food every day. But there the parents must pay, if the child will eat.

It varies a lot from school to school. My first school managed to ruin potatoes for 6 years straight (80-ies). While I'm sure we were provided all essential nutrients it tasted exactly like dirt. No exaggeration. Sometimes some kind of salad dressing, that I also didn't like the flavor of, was offered on the side. Super rarely we had brown gravy or meat stew to add flavor. But most of the time plain boiled unpeeled potatoes. No seasoning provided! The butter on the table... forbidden to use on the potatoes. Try and cut whatever meat we were provided into tiny pieces and mix with the potatoes, you would get yelled at! ALL the adults were super invested in not letting us try to make it edible in any way. At the time I thought it was for some adult reason that would make sense, some day,. But now in my mid 40-ies I'm still not sure what was going on. There were a lot of mentions of starving children in 3rd world countries if we ever asked why we couldn't improve the food or struggled with swallowing it. I did offer to send them my potatoes (although I felt a bit bad about it, because there were plenty of good tasting potatoes we could send instead) but my teacher never took me up on that. Maybe it was all because of some "learn to eat what you are served" reason? Except, potatoes are commonly served together with salt, pepper, butter or some kind of gravy everywhere else in the country. I never seen those plain unpeeled dirt flavored monstrosities, that you had to fight your gag reflex as you forced them down, anywhere else. Whenever we were visiting other schools and ate lunch there, their lunches were quite normal and average. Peeled potatoes and some favor other then dirt to go with them. Maybe the lunch ladies were making bank selling spices and gravy on the black market at our school (LOL). The mystery of the school lunch at Käpplunda, Skövde, Sweden 1980-1987!!!

The problem with the Swedish food is that is very unusual and vegetable so kids do not eat and that how kids in Sweden gets eating disabilities and stay hungry the whole school day

How much money the different municipalities decide to spend on the school food differ across the country. Its down to each region to spend the tax money how they want. Some decide on a real chef that can make good, cheap food. Other go the cheap route (which usually isn't that much cheaper), and don't really care what they eat as long as they don't brake the bank. We should have a rule that demands all regions to hire a real chef and demand fresh produced food. To make food kinda the same across the country.

They will not tell us the reason, we can ask them why even after taking fees you are not providing proper nutritious food, but if we ask them this ! They will ask our parents number and tell them your child is not proper he doesn't know how to behave with teacher , better take your child home..🤗

Last winter? You shouldnt feed bread to ducks, it isnt healthy, give them peas, lettuce instead. My daughter had white wine poached Cod with white wine sauce, Jerusalem artichoke and salad buffet. They use lingon jam here because in this area lingon is used for so much more then meatballs. Yes I am in Sweden.

The good thing about when you come home is that you know that a good homecooked meal is waiting for you. Fastfood is SO expensive here! If a kid wants to eat a Bigmac at McDonalds it would be her whole "Månadspeng" as we call it in Sweden. (The kids get 10 dollars every month or 2 dollars every week to buy or keep it so they can buy something that they want). But one thing that no one can stop us from doing is from having a fika time and just sit in a cafe with some friends, a weinerbröd and a cup of coffee and tea...

unfortunately people in prison are getting better food than both kids in school and retired seniors here in Sweden. People in prison actually have it much better than many taxpayers have. A few years ago a student killed 2 teachers at school with a knife, and after just a few weeks in jail he was treated with a PS 5 because he was feeling sad.....and that's just one example...

It's funny how differently people react to thing. I myself and my children have always pretty much hated school food. I often rather went hungry than eat the stuff. Am I arrogant to suggest that it was because the food at home was so much better?

I think it depends alot on the municipality. We used to have really good food in school, but when our class visited a neighbouring municipality they had almost inedible food. They managed to fail with spaghetti bolognese. We were horrified.

Any country which serves heavily processed, previously frozen food in public schools. Much of our kids wellbeing and health depends on what they eat. Every country should heavily invest in making sure kids have at least one good meal a day. Some parents don't know how to cook, some don't have time, others don't have means. I am deeply troubled what my kid's schools serves for lunches. Because of it, I insist on eating breakfast at home and taking lunch to school.

What kind of sorcery is this? Is it a private school? Because my school had nothing fresh, they didn't even cook the food and the nutrients value (lab test) of the food was so low that it was more or less pointless to eat. Everything was processed ingredients, nothing fresh. Maybe things have gotten better since 2004 which was the last year in public school. I bet this was a private school.

@@Minderz yes, although I think it has a lot to do with time passing since I attended school, there's bigger emphasis on good and fresh food now. I grew up when local cooked food switched over to centralized prepared food, mostly made with without fresh ingredients. When I lefts school they started to focus more on cooking food with better ingredients. I just never saw any of that so for me this is sorcery.

I am swedish and when I was a kid I got way too much vegetables in school and they were terrible in quality and taste and when they serve real food like burger they say you can only eat 1 or 2 so I'm hungry the rest of the day and most days of the later years I'm going somewhere else to buy food or skip school and go home to eat. And I am not the only one, I know it, Welcome to Sweden..
