Swansea filmed early in the morning summer of 1996
Just a record filmed in the summer of 1996 of the few old buildings left in Swansea that had survived the blitz and the city planners. By 2020 a few have been pulled down, a few left to ruin and thankfully a few saved and successfully repurposed like Bethesda Chapel. Some of the streets filmed are High Street, Wind Street, The Strand, Adelaide Street, Alexandra road, Oxford Street, Northampton lane and St Helens road.

I lived in Swansea from 1978 to 1983 when I was a teenager. First familiar site for me was Castle Cinema. But today (2024) I saw a video just 3 months old and the cinema building looked unused and rundown. Oh so many memories.
52 pence a litre! CraZy times, I had just left swansea in April 96 for a dream job at 18.5, swansea is rough around the edges, but its home. And the gower, mumbles ,marina areas are lovely. Its a real contrast.
Have you thought about recreating this video for 2023? would be great to show how different Swansea is now.

@@DigitalHardrock You clearly don't live in Swansea if you think that.
Incredible how far Swansea's come since then.
Swansea people are always banging on about how much better the city used to be, but I'm blown away by how much better it is NOW compared to in this video. It looks utterly deserted and derelict

I think the peak was pre WW2, were still filling in the gaps since then.

@@thetimelapseguy8 Definitely. The city centre was actually beautiful pre-war, and neither the wealth from copper or the victorian civic pride that allowed the construction of beautiful stone buildings is likely to ever return. Now we get student flats, mostly.

The place was a lot more run down then without a doubt and it’s much more modern than it used to be in this video but I think the reference to Swansea being much better refers to the way people were back then, it was simpler and despite the shabby run down appearance of the place it was believe it or not a fun place to be. Hard to believe I know but in a strange way it had identity all be it scruffy. I guess the old Swansea was falling to pieces at this point and was just on the cusp of change.
really enjoyed this video. mental how much swansea has changed.
I arrived in Swansea to do my degree about three months after this... in fact I was probably sitting my A-Levels when this was filmed. It really was a "pretty shitty city" but everyone I went to uni with had such brilliant memories of the place. I lived in West Cross (awful), Uplands (Pantygwydr Road) and Brynmill (Brunswick St). Now 25yrs since I graduated. Gulp. I'd still love to go back.
I was at Uni there then, I'd forgotten how dirty and run down it looked, nothing like my memories of the place.
Swansea has/had its ups and downs, but it is a lovely city.
I was born on that very day in Singleton hospital! Safe to say Swansea has definitely changed a bit!
Considering it was a Saturday, I can't get over how quiet the roads are

The clip at 3:30 shows the police station clock at 5:17am so I imagine the whole video was finished by 6:30am

It was quieter then. I noticed more and more people being out and about earlier and later as the years rolled by.... more weekend and shift work now.
That's the time I made so many close friends at Dylan's and the Zone, great footage!
Excellent historical archive - copy should be given to West Glamorgan Archives Service
Really good film of the place I will always love. Thank you. Have shared to Fond Memories of Swansea on Facebook.
Great video! I hope to see more like it. Thanks for sharing, I really appreciate it 😃
Show's the investment money made available once the Welsh Assembly were able to stop Parliament funnelling it away from Wales. Cardiff looked pretty bleak at this time too.

Swansea had plenty of investment in the 70s-90s but most of it was spent on business parks, shopping centres and roads on the outskirts. City centres around the UK suffered from this.

oh, so it was a huge coincidence that Cardiff city centre stopped looking like a Communist block dump just after the Senedd came into existence? I believe you! @@thetimelapseguy8

@@thetimelapseguy8except all of the investment you mention came from EU funding and private funding.
I used to be up at that time to catch the bus on the Kingsway for the 6.00am shift at Mettoys. I remember the peacefulness. That was in the mid-1970s. Swansea has gone to shit since.
Lovely buildings should be preserved
3:41 - is this the building next to the Glynn Vivian, i believe its some sort of hostel nowadays?
4:37 The legendary Elysium.
Fuck thats nostalgic! I ws 18 years old when this was filmed

It's by the Glynn Vivian Art gallery. I think it houses young homeless people who are transitioning to permanent accommodation.
