"You will be nearer to Heaven through football than through the study of the Gita." - Swami Vivekananda. This quotation is a part of Vivekananda's book Lectures from Colombo to Almora. Swamiji is not asking anyone to throw away the Gita and just play football. All he is saying is both are necessary but playing football yields better result than studying the Gita. Now let us look at why he said this. The crux of the Gita is Krishna’s advice to Arjuna to rise above the idea of personal loss or gain. Krishna, the Yogi of the highest order, goes on to explain what Yoga is. Krishna in his discourse highlights the importance of Karma yoga, Bhakti yoga, and Jnana yoga. Karma Yoga (Yoga/Union in action): A Karma Yogi doesn’t act out of his wants. He does what needs to be done in the world at the moment. His actions stems from his all inclusiveness and not from his limited identity of himself, his family, caste, creed, community, etc. Bhakti Yoga (Yoga/Union in devotion): A Bhakti Yogi, while performing action in the world, isn’t perturbed with what the outcome of his action may be. He is conscious of the fact that the result of any action in the world not only depends on his endeavors but also depends on countless other external factors which are not under his control. Because he has complete control over his emotions, he has the ability to pay undivided attention to his action; hence, does his best. Jnana Yoga (Yoga/Union in intelligence): A Jnana Yogi has clarity of perception. He has the ability to see through the dynamic nature of the world. Because of this ability he can face new situations in life and go through those quite effortlessly. Unfortunately, people believe reading the Gita is enough. Vivekananda reminds us that mere accumulation of knowledge, however sacred, isn’t enough to enhance one’s life. Vivekananda points out that a footballer is more in yoga than one who is mugging up the Gita verse by verse. A footballer on the football field is not playing for himself but is carrying out the objectives of the team. Hence, in some sense, he is practicing Karma Yoga. A footballer is paying undivided focus on the ball and is playing according to best of his ability. Hence, in some sense, he is practicing Bhakti Yoga. A footballer is constantly honing his perception to be able to see through the dynamic nature of the game. Hence, in some sense, he is practicing Jnana Yoga. Now, the final piece of the puzzle is the word “heaven” used by Vivekananda. We must understand that Vivekananda, both when in India and when abroad, was speaking amidst people of Abrahamic faith. This is why, even though in Hindu way of life there is no hell or heaven but only liberation and rebirth, Vivekananda used the word “heaven” instead of “liberation”. Anyone who will come across this quote will initially be puzzled. But the insightful meaning behind this quote reaffirms why guru Ramakrishna Paramahansa rightly named Narendranath Datta as Vivekananda: the joy of perception.

Parasara Smriti 7.5-6 When the twelfth year is reached by the female child, if the guardian does not give her away in marriage, her fore-fathers drink, without interruption, during each succeeding month, whatever blood is passed in her courses. Manmatha Nath Dutt Samvarta Samhita verses 66-68 “[A maiden] eight years [old] becomes Gouri; one of nine years a Rohini; and of ten years, a Kanya (maiden); and after that, a Rajasvala (a woman in menses). By seeing a maiden in menses, her mother, father and eldest brother these three go to hell. Therefore one should espouse a maiden before she has menstruated; the marriage of an eight years old maiden is most preferrable.” Tr. Manmatha Nath Dutt Vishnu Smriti 24.41. I love Vivekaanda but I dont agree with his view that all religions are true. How can it be possible when different religions give different and often opposing answers to the same question. For example, Hindus believe that after death rebirth happens, Christians believe that after death soul goes to God and resurrection of the body will happen on the last day. Muslims believe that any man who follows all rules of Islam will go to Jannat. As per Christianity, Islam and Judaism, there is no rebirth. Now how can all religions be true, either rebirth happens or it doesn't happen, right? How can one who says it happens and one who says it doesn't happen both be true? The best answer would be that we don't know what happens after death but all of them cannot be true at the same time. Anyone who can clarify how Vivekananda handled this question?

I studied in Ramkrishna Mission school..and one of our main subject in the school, in all grades, was Indian Culture and Moral education which is mainly based on Sri Ramkrishna, Swami Vivekanda and Maa Saradamani's life and their phylosophy and other great scholars of that time. That time we just passed the exam but later in my life when I understand the real meaning..feel proud of the "previleges" that I had, and got the oppurtunity to study in such schools.. Still in my life..I follow.."that my religion should not control my food habit" - and I eat everything what my tastebuds like.🙏

Swami Vivekanand ji is my ideal person of all time ❤️ Inspiring motivates me always Always live my ❤️💜❤️

Please us all. 8. Yajurveda 20.84: May the scholarly woman purify our lives with her knowledge, noble actions and guidance. 9. Yajurveda 20.85: Noble woman motivates us to be on path of truth, love and harmony. 10. Rigveda 2.41.16: O woman, you are the motherly force that provides direction to our life. 11. Rigveda 6.61.2: The way a powerful river breaks down even strongest rocks and hills, in same manner an intelligent woman destroys the fraud propagated by perverted ones. May we bow to such intelligent women. 12. Atharvaveda 7.57.1: Whenever I am hurt emotionally or physically, woman - as a mother, wife, sister etc - provides healing touch and rejuvenates me. I bow in humble respect to her.

"What Bengal thinks today India thinks tomorrow"...from our childhood we have heard the stories of Swami Vivekananda,Ramkrishna,Rabindranath thakur, Vidyasagar,Ram Mohan Roy and many more...more than the ramayana or any mythological stories and for this reason even today Bengal stands for secularism, brotherhood and rationalism more than any other state in india.
