Swakop River flowing into the ocean at Swakopmund

For the first time in 10 years the Swakop River has managed to break through to the ocean. Hundreds of people have come to see the spectacle!
The Swakop is a river in the desert, the Namib desert.
Due to sand mining, some people were dubious that the river would ever reach the ocean again. Namibia's rivers do not flow regularly, and the last time this river was flowing this strongly was in 2011. Luckily for everyone, the predictions were wrong and it was good to see the river flowing again! The rains across Namibia have been swelling the rivers all over Namibia.
The river's muddy color is also where it gets it's name from. Swakaub is a word that means "diarrhea" in a local language, and the river looks remarkably like that when it does flow.

    Yeah, this river does not reach the ocean frequently. The last time I remember was in 2011.

    Are these crooked concrete pillars the remnants of a bridge?

  • @AwesomeChapters

    @AwesomeChapters

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you are correct. There was a railway bridge that was washed away, rebuilt and washed away again by previous floods. The railway bridge is now further up the river where there is a stronger foundation.

    It's kind of sad seeing all that water running into the sea. Especial when it happens mostly once in a decade. Water is so important, I'd think in a desert country they would plan a dam?

    They might want the sealife to propagate in the river. More than just fertile land because of the trace minerals reaching the plants near there river because of the food chain starting at the bottom of the ocean. Boron in the ocean is just one.

    Since the river rarely flows, a dam would not be of much use, unfortunately.
