Hello Alex. Sviridov composed his religious works throughout his career in secrecy from the late 60's (when he wrote the three Tzar Feodor choruses, which were written for a theatre adaption of Tzar Feodor) Later in the late 80's early 90's his sacred music was published as a cycle of sacred choral pieces. (Prayers and Canticles) The late 60's was a spiritual renaissance in Soviet music. Alfred Schnittke for example wrote his famous requiem for a medieval play (which can be found on this channel). Because of religious persecution Sviridov was afraid to show this sacred music that accompanied him for a few decades. When asked what the essence of Russia is, he said (rough translation): "Russia is the land of the Word, the land of the song, the land of the minor key, the land of vastness, the land of Christ."
