For some reason I love to listen to Richter's soothing and relaxing interpretations during spring with the birds chirping and singing outside the open balcony door.

8:41 Richter’s rendition, especially on this piece, sounds so matter of fact yet every note becomes special. Far more gracious than any else that I heard. Mesmerizing.

Such was Richter's artistry that everything simply sounds right, of course there are always aspects of style and interpretation which academics and critics might argue. Under Richter's hands these Handel performances make for compelling and persuasive listening. Surely one of his great recordings.

Speaking of coughing at concerts. In the original release of his famous live recording of "Pictures at an Exhibition" it sounded like everyone in Sofia was dying of consumption.

just came from Alicia De Larrocha's recording, so different with her delightful interpretation, Richter's touching make it so nostalgia...and sometimes, only sometimes like now, i really don't think it matters that much if those academic rules of Baroque interpretation are strictly obeyed or not.

It doesn’t necessarily have to matter when, and here is the “catch”, it’s interpreted by an extremely talented pianist. In 99.9% of cases it will matter.

No one hated people coughing during a recital more than Richter himself. He has been known, before sitting down, to expressly ask audiences not to hinder his concentration with their coughs.

I think what you just said is rubbish. Richter played the vast majority of his concerts in the Soviet Union. If coughing distracted him so much he would hardly have given a recital there in winter months. I can never understand the deal on youtube with coughing. It happens. Performers learn to deal with it, and a lot worse distractions too.

It’s rare that I hear Handel compared favorably to Bach. Curious why you think so. Me, I admire Bach, even revere him. But Handel, I love.

It's rare because the two baroque giants are chalk and cheese....very little in common apart from identifiable styles in e.g counterpoint. Interesting to me is how seldom Handel's keyboard work is to the fore...presumably due to the volume of his choral and opera works.

Agreed, Monika. Though they were very different types they were both devout Lutherans (yes, Handel remained a Lutheran) and profoundly gifted composers. Handel's music, to me, is a living ,breathing, passionate embodiment of the voice. Even his intricate passages originate from the voice whereas Bach's don't feel necessarily vocal to me, even his vocal music! This tends to give it a somewhat technical and bloodless aspect. His instrumental music such as the Brandenburg Concerti though significant don't reach the innovative variety and profound magnitude of Handel's opus 6 and 12 Concerti Grossi. These are not the standard musicological prescriptions I was force fed in my undergraduate Music history classes but an overwhelming realization from the performance and exposure to both of these universal demi-gods. I also contend Handel's counterpoint, is the equal and in some cases surpasses JSB's.

So everybody who can't stand coughing; listen to studio recordings and never go to concerts. Chances are when nearly 1000 people gather that somebody will cough every now and then. So?
