I have 4 of them (2 of the old models and 2 of the newer R models) and I have 3 of the Tourist camp sets. Love the Svea 123!

I've had mine for 30 plus years, still using it today. Neve has let me down. Great little stove.

I am 73 years old and have been using the Svea 123r since the 1960's. I figured out a neat way to start it. Just tear off a small piece of paper towel, toilet paper will not work. Roll it long ways between your fingers. Then open the fuel cap and dip the rolled paper towel into the ful and let it soak up some gas. Put the rolled paper towel in the preheating cup, being careful not to let it get near the fuel cap so you don't burn the o ring. Jut light it and open the vaqlve when it gets hot. That way you don't have fuel running down the outside of the stove.

the trick to these types of stoves is doing a full burner preheat or priming procedure before attempting to open the control valve. if you open the valve early, you get flare-ups and yellow flames but you're losing tank pressure in the process, and it's really hard for this design to catch up with the heat transfer. if it's windy you need to shield the stove from wind while priming, or you'll just waste priming fuel while not heating up the vaporizer.

Instead of an eye dropper, use a small piece of paper towel rolled up, about 2 inches. Dip that into the white gas and let it soak up the gas. Put the cap on.Then wrap it around the base of the generator. Try to keep it open at the cap so you don't fry the cap's washer. Then you won't have gas running down the sides. In the winter you may have to do it twice, so use gas from your refill tank. Also in the winter you may have to shield the stove from the cold ground to keep pressure.

charlie tango have you tried lighting one of these in sub zero temps? on a mt (real one ie nothing in the uk they are all "hills" not mts) its a fun stove that i take on day trips but wouldnt use for anything longer than three days too may short comings and gets heavy after 3days ( need to take extra fuel bottle) the msr is better at snow melting and way more efficent.

Yes I have used mine in sub zero temps up on the mountains, (yes we DO have mountains) no problem with it if you know what you are doing. was your jet a faulty one?? my stoves are 70 years old and never had to have the jets replaced, you must have had a faulty one.

Try the Grampians in Scotland, or in Wales, Mountains not Hills.

It doesn't 'brass grenade' mine has over pressurized once or maybe twice, and the pressure relief valve goes off, just need to keep brush and leaves clear of it. Plus, I grew up with a Swedish made late model of these, just recently had to replace it with the Chinese reproduction. Which is still the best new stove available for me, but it lacks the reassuring jet engine scream I am used to.

The Original 123 is a better Stove IMHO, no problem with the jet cleaner.

I dont know why people put meths into the priming well, and then, put the windshield back on. The priming fuel is evaporating away or leaking over the fuel tank. Just leave the windshield on and pour a little priming fuel down inbetween the bell and burner plate. No wastage and alot better than some people who prime it, light it and then try to put the windshield back on without getting burned.

These things can really flame hard. It sounded like you never got it going to full pressure. They can really scream.

The reason for the orange flame is due to the fuel that you are using, if you use Coleman's fuel it will stop all that, as well as stopping it sooting up. I think what it needs is a good service, in my opinion.

I have two svea's. Both burn well, have new gaskets and wicks. I have the original kit the stove sits in also. I have a pump, spare diffuser plates and fuel caps. How much would they be worth?

Sylvain was very right. There are more poor and dangerous "reviews" about priming the Svea 123 on YT than you can poke a stick at.. If you are making a review then do it properly or not at all. Smart ass answers are just that.

That's what they were called back in the 80s in NZ as if you weren't use to using one and shield them they would vent! Have you seen one vent? Lots of fun!!
