I could listen to Suzanne Vega all day. She's a such a great storyteller, a poet, one of the best singer songwriters out there.

There are many people who have different tones in speaking and singing. In my opinion her voice is straight, just like the singers she admires, such as Leonard Cohen, but in female version.

Clearly, Suzanne performs and plays music because she loves to. She'd do it even if she didn't do it for money. So money was never her 1st goal - as, musically, commercially, obviously there are more expedient ways (read kowtow to record companies) to "sell product." But it IS a business, and to succeed on your own terms, you: 1) need talent, good songs; 2) To find YOUR audience and musical niche; 3) You need a good business plan and ability to market yourself; 4) AND you HAVE to WANT it BADLY!

@Bluenile38 Are you implying that most women don't? Kind of a strange comment.

I have never heard Suzanne speak until I came to this link. I was shocked with the difference between her speaking voice and her singing voice. Suzanne's tone and pitch from when she talks is TOTALLY different than when she sings. When she talks her expression is serious and her voice deeper. Her singing voice is lighter, girl-like, and pretty. I wonder if she always changed expressions like that or was she forced to add the serious expression because of the music industry's sexism and greed?
