This video was recorded with High-definition. Use the Settings "gear" in the bottom right hand corner of the video to change the quality to 1080p for the best video quality. Remember, this suturing technique is not great for lacerations or incision that are under tension. The skin edges should already be well approximated before you start this stitch. I used the tension base in the video for instructional purposes only- So you could see what I was doing a little easier.

    You cant use that technique though as it would be very unlikely you would have stitching thread that melts. So you would have to do it the most common technique.

    My dad is a surgeon, he is already retired but I saw him do this once because of a family emergency and it was amazing, but he was working quite fast so I didn’t get to appreciate the technique. I’m loving this. I was always the “nurse” because growing with a very passionate doctor is quite interesting and fear of blood or gore is not something you develop.

    30+ years ago, I was a graphic designer in Atlanta and my biggest client was a vet, an exclusively feline practitioner. I had the privilege of watching several of the doctor’s surgeries and one in particular sticks in my mind. The cat had bladder surgery and when the vet closed the incision, he used this very type of suture. It impressed me because he could have closed the wound with a much simpler (and stronger) suture method. The wound would never be seen, yet he used this subcuticular running suture even though the cat’s fur would grow back and it would cover the scar. I suspect he might have been showing off a bit; nonetheless, I’ve always remembered that.

    I’m 14 and I can say that I’ve subcutaneously sutured my own dermal laceration on my leg. Great job me! (Yes it should have hurt but I’m on pain meds for CRPS so I felt nothing. ) I’m seeing my doc for a checkup tomorrow, and I am asking him how he thinks I did. Edit: he literally asked me “who sutured this? I’ve never seen this style before but it’s really well done! I thought it was just a project from your makeup class” (I’m in a makeup class for school)

    Okay so this is grim but on the odd occasion self harm patients have been forced to get stitches without pain relief and on another note I once helped my Dad stitch his eyelid. It's definitely painful but the level of pain depends on where needs stitching, whether the person still has natural painkillers surging through them, and the skill of the person doing it, etc. You might get the shakes from the pain and if it wasn't done well the pain might be long lasting due to nerve damage, but you'd survive. The pain ranges from anywhere from a 5/10 to a 9/10 I would say. 10 being the worst pain you can imagine and 0 being no pain at all. Also in this video he's showing a relatively easy wound to stitch. So if you genuinely want to know for emergency situations check out everything you could possibly need to know about wounds and sutures including cleaning procedures and army and bushcraft medicine.

    Hi there. When using the subcuticular suturing technique, it's important that you use dissolvable suture material - suture that does not get removed but dissolves after the incision/laceration heals. I generally use 5-0 Monocryl for subcuticular suturing. Thanks for watching!

  • @lovingitsobad

    @lovingitsobad

    5 жыл бұрын

    Conrad Harmon you could if you wanted to or needed to, but you usually choose subcutaneous sutures for cosmetic purposes, steri strips won’t cause extra trauma and therefore more scarring and simple stitches would. Of course every wound is different so u should really think about whats better for that particular wound.

  • @conrad2690

    @conrad2690

    5 жыл бұрын

    Metzli Rodriguez thanks, that makes sense. Have you noticed any difference between steri strips vs stitches on “width” of the scar? Id assume stitches would hold the wound closer together, and it seems more permanent when trying to keep it sealed shut. Steri strips kinda scare me in that regard. I wouldn’t trust them to hold there place and not cause the wound to open slightly. Id rather have a thin scar with a few pin hole scars, than one bigger scar without the little holes. Im just curious. Whats your experience with them?

  • @lovingitsobad

    @lovingitsobad

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@conrad2690 My experience with steri strips is limited to none, in all honesty. I've never personally used them because we don't have them available in the hospital I study in. But I've seen patients with both types of closures with all kinds of results. I guess you never know how a patient will heal. However, I must tell you I'm just a medstudent with a passion for plastic surgery so take my words with a grain of salt.
