Sutjeska National Park: Hike Lake Trnovačko and Mount Maglic [4K]

Bosnia and Herzegovina's oldest National Park - Sutjeska - is close to my idea of paradise. Part of it is actually in Montenegro 🇲🇪, containing the heart-shaped Trnovačko Jezero (Trnovac Lake), which I hiked to. ⛰️We then climbed Mount Maglić (2,386 metres), the highest peak is all of Bosnia & Herzegovina. 🇧🇦
🏞️ Sutjeska National Park also has Perućica, one of Europe's last remaining primeval forests with its mystical atmosphere, leading up to the 75m tall (Vodopad) Skakavac Waterfall. Along the way we also met a couple of characters who live in the National Park, who plied us with rakija (the ubiquitous Balkan fruit brandy).🍶
I stayed at the Rafting Camp HIGHLANDER (highlandertim.com/en/highland...) in a basic but comfortable wooden cabin, and also enjoyed hanging out by the central campfire bar. Rafting Camp HIGHLANDER also arranged my guide Oggy ( / oggy_bike_and_hiking ) who was great (and tall), though didn't speak English, so I thankfully had the good company of a Macedonian couple - Elena & Nikola - to help me translate and hang out with.🇲🇰
Sutjeska National Park was the perfect climax to end my 10 day exploration / road trip 🚗 of Bosnia & Herzegovina (including the Republic Srpska) in September 2019. Bosnia & Herzegovina has a somewhat painful past, but it's such a beautiful country with very friendly people, and I really recommend this fascinating country you visit when we can travel again.
I spent a long time putting this video together, so I hope you enjoy coming along on my adventure. Let me know what you think in the comments. I'd especially love to know if you've been to Bosnia & Herzegovina and the Balkans.

These views are always worth the hike, and parks like Sujeska are definitely what we are looking for. And agree that the way down is usually trickier than the way up! But again, these views.... Bosnia & Herzegovina seems to be a hiker paradise!

For sure!! Sutjeska NP is absolutely great for hiking. You have to be careful if you go not to go off the main trails, in case of unexploded land mines, but so worth it to see the scenery. Thanks for watching!

@@XennialTraveller Good to know about the land mines. We do usually like to go off-trails (when it's not impacting the local fauna or adding to the erosion) but we would surely keep that in mind there!

Totally underrated! I didn't even know how it would look until I got there and saw for myself since there's very very little information online. And the lake part was actually in Montenegro, so no wonder. I can recommend some mushrooms and flowers to accompany the Mario theme tune 😉

What an awesome shot at 0:55! (We thought all this time we were subscribed, doh! Now we are 😎) Who are your hiking buddies? Perfect time for rakia, of course! LOL April wouldn't want to sleep with the cabbage...she has bad memories of cabbage, hahaha. Yay for Montenegro! Was that giant mushroom edible?? Amazing view of the lake from Maglic! OMG, April would definitely be doing your bum slide technique! Pretty waterfall. One thing we wished we had done in B & H is hike, but the weather wasn't ideal. Great video!

I was really lucky with the weather! From memory only had one day when it properly rained, and even the first day of hiking turned out to be good enough. The two hiking buddies were from Macedonia - and thankfully they helped me translate since the guide doesn't speak English. The giant mushroom was indeed edible - looked quite like the ones they grill and eat in Japan and Taiwan. :D Thanks for watching - I can't quite get videos out as regularly as you guys, but hopefully they're worth the wait in between each of them :)

I totally agree. Despite living in a big city (Hong Kong), I still feel most at home when I'm surrounded by nature. Montenegro - yeah! They didn't tell me before hand, but that reminds us that the natural world has no borders. Our guide showed us a photo of the waterfall frozen in winter - now THAT was magical. Thanks so much for watching 😃

I tried this rakia drink before, I worked with a Serbian guy in China and he had some, powerful stuff. Do you use a gimbal? Really good footage when you are walking around, 0 shake. Spectacular views, this is my idea of hiking!

  • @XennialTraveller

Oh Rakia / Rakija / Slivovice / Palinka / Grappa.... Most of it is home brew, most quite potent. And yeah, I use a DJI Ronin-SC. Definitely still some shake since it was my first trip with the gimbal, but getting better with practice. But good to know I managed to make it look smooth ;) Hopefully you get to go on some good hikes soon!!

What a beautiful park is that! Too bad you didn't fly your drone over the lake longer, it looked so pretty when it went up. The hike up the mountain looked intense, not sure if I could've done that. How long did it take?

  • @XennialTraveller

    @XennialTraveller

    4 жыл бұрын

The hike up took us something like 4 1/2 hours up, and then just under 4 down (I think). It was pretty intense because for a lot of it it just keeps going up up up. Good workout for the legs 😃 I actually did fly my drone more, but the lake is so much bigger than it looks, so I needed to fly really high up / far before you can see the shape. So some of the other footage wasn't as impressive. Thanks for watching!
